“Great Place - Second visit”

Captain Don's Habitat

May 4, 2008

This is our second trip to Captain Don's Habitat. We were there last year about this time of year and loved it both times. This time we stayed in a deluxe ocean view room. Last year we stayed in a 2 bed 2 bath bungalow. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. We printed out the Dive Liability release and Hotel Registration forms from their web site under FAQs and filled them out ahead of time which made check in easy and fast. The room was clean, the water was hot and we had a great view from the balcony. The food at Rum Runners was great, and although the service was a little slow, we were in no hurry. The waiters were great and interacted with us a lot. We took the EFR course while we were there from Wilco and I should offer a special thanks to Karin, Max and others for being our practice dummies during the course.
I popped my ear drum while I was there due to reverse block and had to quit diving early, but my wife continued diving with our other friends and had a good time. The dive shop made an appointment for me at a local dive doctor's office and Wilco made sure I got there. I spent the rest of the week helping my friends and others get in and out of the water at various shore dive locations, but I still had a great time. I would go back to Captain Don's any time and would recommend it to anyone.

“Definitely Recommend this Resort”

After reading the reviews on this site we were more than a little worried about staying here. We should not have been.

Had an Ocean Villa but then asked if we could upgrade to a Deluxe - no problem. Mimi and Virma on reception were more than helpful. Staff in the restaurant were great, on nights it was busy the service could be slow but hey this is the Carribean - relax!

The diving was great - both on the boat and the shore.

The food was good and very reasonably priced. Breakfast was buffet style with plenty on offer. Omlettes and friend eggs made to order. On Monday nights the great Captain Don himself shows up to meet the guests. What a great guy, long may this event take place!!

We have no complaints with this hotel at all and would recommend staying there to anyone who is a keen diver. We plan to go back for two weeks but this time in one of the cottages.

The rooms were clean and there were plenty of towels. If you run out of something then ask.

As for mosquito's, yes they are a pain but take repelent and a plug in for your room!

“Beautiful view, bad service”

Captain Don's Habitat

There are good sides and bad sides about the Habitat. Once again it was very useful to know about the shortcomings beforehand.

First about the good sides:

We had an oceanfront deluxe room. The room location was excellent, the beatiful sea and pool were right there. Also, they have attractive flowers in the gardens and pool area. We enjoyed tea and coffee in ou patio (not too close to the pool). Also, there was a refrigerator in the room. You can fetch ice water from the restaurant with a pithcer from the refrigerator. The tap water is safe and tastes good. The room size was ok.

The oceanside restaurant served reasonable priced food and the food was pretty good. During our four-night stay the service wasn't slow as some have complained but we got a wrong bill twice (someone else's smaller bill).

Compared to the Buddy Dive resort next door, the Habitat's pool is more attractive. Buddy Dive's pool has paint peeling from it.

The hotel would be nice if they did something about the service. Reception staff is not at all interested in their guests and you have to drag to receive answers to your basic questions. There is no resort information brochure or room book available. Our room floor had not been cleaned at all, there was a lot of sand there. Luckily I had an old teeshirt with me and we made a rag out if it and cleaned the floor (room and bathroom both). Also, they don't give you fresh towels daily.

One very unpleasant thing are the mosquitoes in the room (you can see on the wall dead ones killed by previous guests). The mosquitoes kept me awake three nights out of four.

There is a grocery store within a convenient walking distance. The pricies are higher than in a supermarket but not three times (nor twice). The whole island is expensive. I am sure there would be better service at the nicer hotels but they are more expensive. Not that Habitat is very cheap (we paid 160 euros per night for the oceanfront deluxe room, although not very much luxury in the room itself...). There is no public transportation availabe beside taxis.

“Bonaire no more”

Captain Don's Habitat

Jan 9, 2008

We just returned from a trip to Bonaire over Christmas. We stayed at Catain Don's Habitat. The day we arrived we got an apartment in a remote building called "flamboyant rooms" although we booked a ocean view villa for 600US$ per night for 3 adults and 2 children. The flamboyant room we got was dirty and filthy. There were cockroaches in the bathroom, the moskitos were carrying you off during the night because the moskito screens were broken. The two bedrooms faced directly to the main road and we could not get to sleep until 2 a.m.. After a major complaint in the morning (manager) we finally got a bungalow wich was better but all in all was not worth the price. The food at the restaurant was good the service terrible. We had to wait 1 hour to get the starter and then another hour for main course. If the children were not already asleep by then we rarely had the nerves to order desert. A problem was also to get enough fresh towels. In the beginning we had only 4 towels for 5 persons. After 2 days there were only 2 towels left for the whole family.
Wherever you went there was the feeling that they just wanted to rip you off. A little supermarket nearby sold food for 3 times as much as the big supermarket in town.
Diving was really not that spectacular. Only very small fishes. Parts of the reef, especially in the National Park were destroyed. Diving was a little bit better south of the airport.
The staff at the dive shop at Captain Don's was not very cooperative. They hang around more lethargic than trying to help the customers. There was nor space to hang and dry the wetsuits. The lockers were dirty and smelled awfully. I never wanted to hang my suit in there, so we had to carry everything to the bungalow and hang it there for drying. The basins for cleaning the dive gear were good and spacious.
When you fly back home there is another rip off at the airport where you have to pay airport tax. This all leaves a very bad taste.
Overall I will never come to Bonaire again.

“Great Diving OK room”

Captain Don's Habitat

Dec 16, 2007

We arrived to find our room, which had recently been remodled (which was why we reserved that studio specifically)had been double booked. We were "upgraded". They considered it an upgrade because it was to a suite from a studio. The couch was moldy and the whole place needed to be aired out. The first night was very uncomfortable. The mattress was the hardest rock ever. Housekeeping was very lax and towels were not always available. Once we aired it out the musty smell did go away. We were afforded an ocean veiw as we had been promised and the view and sun were great. AWESOME pool, which I never found to be crowded. The diving both shore and boat were second to none, dive staff was very helpful. Breakfast buffet excellent, dinner wait staff left a lot to be desired. Very loud and slow service. Check in/out smooth except for not getting the room we had reserved and no one seemed to be able to answer my questions regarding the situation.
