“Best Family Attraction”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2014

The Donkey Sanctuary is a must see. You will love the experience and help the orphaned, abused and rescued donkeys at the same time. Let me give some background of our visit to Bonaire and our experience with the donkeys. - While exploring the north side of the island, we stumbled across a herd of feral donkeys. They were thin, one had a huge piece of cactus embedded in its side, and one donkey had numerous deeply cut scars on his neck. We were so moved seeing this herd that we headed back to the mountain town of Rican to buy some fruit in an effort to feed the donkeys. This memory stayed with us, and we were delighted to learn that there was a sanctuary on the island with approximately 500 rescued donkeys. Originally we went to the sanctuary to support the rescue effort. However, we soon realized the joy was ours. To help feed the animals and support the sanctuary, we bought two buckets of carrots and a bale of hay that was put in our rental truck. First we were taken to the nursery where we saw two rescured 3 day old donkeys. The word "cute" is an under statement! Some of the little ones followed us around. After the nursery adventure, we drove the truck along a designated path to the Look Out Tower. The donkeys smelled the hay in the truck, and 30 to 50 of them galloped along side of our vehicle. The donkeys were gentle and eagerly waited their turn to eat the hay and carrots. It was exciting and safe to be in the middle of the herd! Some of the donkeys figured out how to run along side the truck. If the windows were open, they could put their heads through the windows and beg for carrots while galloping. You will want more carrots than you realize! When we almost finished our driving tour of the area, two donkeys greeted us at the back gate hoping we saved some carrots. Thankfully, we did! This is a fun experience for adults and children. I highly recommend the donkey sanctuary experience. I still smile when I look at our pictures taken while we were in the donkey sanctuary. You won't regret going and helping the animals in the process!!!!

They have saved over 500 donkeys who currently reside there
They feed them late afternoon which makes for a great drive though and then fab photo ops
They then hand fed by bottle 2 orphans
So cute

Stop and give a donation to this very worthy cause, even if you don't do the drive-through. Great fun!

“Great time”

Donkey sanctuary was on our hit list when in Bonaire, because of all the great reviews. We had a blast visiting the donkeys and driving around and feeding them carrots.
