This is my second trip to Barbados in about 4 years. The island itself has much to offer tourists and is very welcoming. There has been vast improvement toward modern road signage which helps non-locals who have hired a car to navigate more efficiently. This said, keep in mind that this is by no means as well marked as more developed nations and one should expect to get turned around a fair bit... including on your initial trip to check-in to SP. This was no real problem as one stop to ask for directions got us to the hotel.
The south-side of Barbados is a blend of the raw beauty of the east's ruggedness and the west's serenity. SP's property straddles the rocky corral outcrops and the white corral sands. As a result there is not a bad view from any angle on the beach-side of the small road dividing the complex. This is the side of the resort where we stayed (Rm 119) - the 3rd floor of the newer ocean front complex. The bar was friendly and a reasonable tip to the staff kept the drinks good and strong (I highly reco the Bajan Coffee and Rum Punch). The restaraunt above the bar was very tasty (especially the breakfasts and desserts) and had reasonable prices (except for the bottled water at $6 BDS for .5L). Overall the staff was very kind and welcoming. I did notice the typical 'Bajan Time' here, but not so much as to be anything more than an excuse to relax and take in the wonderful view and cooling wind.
The room was very spacious and amazingly upscale. I enjoyed the double French doors opening toward the beach, and appreciated the excellent air-conditioner after a day of sight-seeing in the non-a/c car hire. This was, however, the only "problem" with the room - the ductwork from the a/c unit dripped consistently in the bathroom in front of the sink. Staff was notified, but nothing appeared to have been done. The fixtures in the bathroom were excellent by any standard. The bath products supplied were of high quality and replenished daily. The flat panel television, DVD, and iPod players were very nice touches. The bed was excellent and with upscale pillows and bedding. The switches in the room took a minute to locate and were not entirely intuitive. The power on Barbados operates at 50 cycles, so ensure you bring international-power devices, not the typical US 60-Hz devices so you don't burn out your device. To that end, there is an international plug in the bathroom noted for either voltage but listed 'for shavers only'. Additionally they provide an iron, hair dryer, water boiler, microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker, so the power issue should be minor.
As noted before, the location is quite remote. If you are comfortable hiring a car (right-drive), this is the best way to overcome the isolation. The island is as safe as any place I've visited anywhere and never felt uncomfortable wandering around day or night, by foot or open-top 'jeep' (Suzuki Jimny). St. Lawrence Gap is where a significant night-life exists and is a pleasant 10-minutes east of the resort. Bridgetown is about 20-minutes and the west coast is about 30-40 minutes depending on where you go. The airport is about 10-15 minuets away, and was never heard during our stay. Shopping is minutes away - neither close nor terribly far. It is this relative isolation that makes SP so wonderful. The beach is used only by some locals and the guests of SP.
Overall this is a fantastic place. SP is best for adults without children, although some well-behaved kids were at the hotel. The surf is a bit rough for all but the strongest and most-experienced swimmers, but the pools were perfect! Each day upon returning to the room, my girlfriend would sigh happily "we're home". That's exactly how you feel here.
