“comfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

i stayed at sunbay and found the room comfortable. however the service could be better. the staff tried to be friendly. thbreakfast area could be cleaned before serving, the area was wet and dirty. staff need to know more about activities on the island. they did not sell the events you had to ask to get information. I thinkt the breakfast was poor.......lol bread and butter, the coffee was weak. i loved the beaches. I would like to see more activities in the hotel.
please put up some sort of plastic curtain to pull down when rain falls the rooms can be flooded, especially in a storm

When I began looking for a family hotel at a reasonable price in Barbados the choices were slim but I was able to find Sunbay quite by accident and I am glad I took it. The hotel is not on the main road but this helps with the reduced noise from traffic, the room was clean and well kept, the staff was friendly and the location is perfect if you are the adventurous type and do not mind walking the short distance to the main road and taking the ZRs!

From this location you can easily travel to Bridgetown, St Lawrence Gap, Rockely/Accra Beach, Oistins and several other popular spots.

When I read quite a few Trip Advisor reviews there were some negative remarks about the continental breakfast. It is true that the breakfast does not have a great variety [2 slices of toast, 2 pastries and juice plus coffee/tea]. However, the staff lets you know well in advance what the breakfast consists of and you can order off the menu. When you compare meal prices in Barbados this is a pretty good deal for a breakfast as most meals start from $20BDS/$10US.

Overall it was a great trip and I would certainly recommend Sunbay to anyone who is looking for a budget holiday.

Room Tip: Ask for the top floor, if you do not mind the chatter by the pool at night you can get a lovely view...

We ended up choosing well. Great deal on Expedia with continental breakfast included. It's a 3 minute walk to the beach and you can use the facilities of their sister property, the Beach club. You will need to go somewhere else to eat and the Beach club isn't a good option. Being also an all-inclusive hotel, you pay a lot just for a meal. The only time we tried it, we decided not to return.

The Sunbay Hotel is pretty basic but perfect for a budget trip to Barbados, and for what we paid you couldn't expect much more. The location is good, very close to a beach at the neighbouring Barbados Beach Club Hotel (sister hotel) where sun loungers are free to use. The hotel is walking distance to Oistins and St Lawrence Gap is easily accessible by bus which was handy. The buses are easy to use (although the non Government (white) buses can be slightly unnerving and all buses are slow at certain times of the day). Buses are the cheapest way to see the island, but other beaches, although lovely and the sea calmer than by our beach, charge extortionate rates for the use of sun loungers. The pool area was nice, clean and catches the sun all day.

Food wise we found the breakfast included a little boring and not always as fresh as it could have been. Consisting of two pieces of toast, a hard miniature croissant and a pastry, it is hardly a continental breakfast as advertised but it was better than nothing. Ordering off the menu was another option but quite expensive as we had already effectively paid for breakfast. The staff in the dining room seemed pretty bored and lethargic! Dinner at the BBC was adequate, if overpriced, but a short trip to St. Lawrence Gap provides much better choice, and great BBQ wings and Margeritas at Cafe Sol.

Unfortunately when booking, there was no mention of the charges for using the safe in the room. A deposit must be paid at reception (credit card, US$50, or Barbados $100) and a charge of US$2 per night must be paid up front.

After checking out, the hotel allowed us to leave our suitcases with reception and use the pool and offered anspare room to shower and change before our flight in the evening, allowing us to maximise our last day in the beautiful Bajan sun.

Overall, we had a great stay. Our room was very basic but clean and cool, and the staff were on the whole friendly and helpful.

Stayed in Sunbay Hotel for a few days just after partying in St.Vincent Carnival. I wish I could of stayed longer. The shower was lovely, the view from the room was great, we was on the first floor and the pool was directly across to our room. The balcony was private with lovely palm trees to look at. This hotel is directly across to beach and is not far from the main road.

I Searched the net for weeks looking for a decent hotel as I am a frequent traveller and usually stay in 4-5 star hotel, but as I wasnt staying for long, I took a chance. Most hotels were £270-400 per night, this one was £56 including continental breakfast.

Bad mistake was not to book for longer.

Before i booked a 10 day stay at this holiday i ensured to do the rounds and get feedback from the travel agent in addition to trip advisor regarding this hotel - i am now sure that the majority of the positive reviews on this site are not genuine and/or have been done by the hotel itself.

My gripe with this hotel is half based on the travel agent and the other half with the actual hotel; nevertheless i can say this is a completely honest review on the facilities and the hotel overall.

First of all the pictures which have been posted on trip advisor are not accurate. The hotel is a small hotel - with the majority of the room not being occuiped, however i am not at liberty to say why. The pool is tiny and was quite dirty most of the time so i prefered to go to the beach rather than go in the pool.

The hotel is quite dated with the majority of rooms having a sliding door for the balcony and adjoining bathroom. Keep the sink closed in the bathroom as the smell from the sewage is very overpowering and sickening.
Additionally close the toilet as it lets off a smell also.
There is a 1980's TV in all rooms however in the restaurant there is a massive flatscreen TV which is rarely turned on.
The hotel staff however did clean the rooms on a daily basis and did so to a good standard.

We (myself and my sisters) booked bed and breakfast at this hotel. DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. Inclusive (continental) breakfast includes two slices of toast, a microwaved cupcake, a lukewarm mini croissant, tea/coffee and pinapple/orange juice (which is really dilute drink). I don't know how this is supposed to sustain an adult but i found myself groggy and unwell after having this for breakfast day after day.
There is the option to order seperate food from the restaurant menu as there is a fully functioning kitchen but of course you have to pay seperately for this luxury. Nevertheless the hotel staff in the restaurant are very polite and kind and they did everything to cater to our needs.
Ensure you get to breakfast in good time as there are local birds (almost similar to pidgeons) who like to feast on leftovers from breakfast and poo on the table and chairs at the same time.
Also if you wish to have the luxury of breakfast delivered to your room it is at the extra cost of five dollars - i only know this because one morning i called the restaurant to have this luxury and was told the 'continental' breakfast would be sent to my room as soon as possible, 45 minutes later i was still starving so i called the restaurant to find out the status of my food. the restaurant staff told me her manager let her know to relay the surplus charge, how i was supposed to magically know this surpluss charge was the reason i had not recieved my food is beyond me.

the quality of the room is appauling; numerous stains can be found within the room; on the ironing board, in the firdge even on the pillow. imagine my suprise to turn my pillow around in the night to find disgusting stains that looked like moss. i ensured to document all of these in pictures.

Across the road is the barbados beach club which looked like the ritz compared to sunbay. Every monday they have an entrtainment night which i enjoyed but it is easily comparable to the British sitcom 'Benidorm'.
Nevertheless i enjoyed my dinner that night and made some new friends.

One positive of the hotel is it is near the airport and oistins; there is a supermarket which is walking distance (or you can take a zr - completely up to you).

The locals are very friendly and really made the trip i had in barbados so much fun. Barbados is literally made for tourists so i ended up making friends for life.
Thank God i didn't depend on the hotel.

Room Tip: If your unhappy with the room ask to change, the staff are very happy to accomodate you. That's...

Very friendly, courteous and helpful staff. The breakfast was delicious. Special thanks to Kathyann, Desire and Amanda who offered advice on places we should visit. The walk to Oistins with Mr. Phillip was educational. My friends and I had a wonderful time travelling by the bus. The stop was not far from the hotel and it's just $2.00 per person. The bus drivers were also very helpful and showed us where our stop was. Will definitely visit soon.
