This is the first time I've written a commentary on the net about a hotel, but I felt they deserved it. P&Q is a Mom & Pop business and they "put out". It's well run with very good meals, off a 2-choice daily menu under the stars on a patio. Always one GOOD choice available. The kind of place where you can just sit on a patio and read and listen to the surf and RELAX, and occasionally move with the shadows. We are a couple in our fifties, empty-nesters, with our own business, and we came to relax and enjoy. It has a rocky shoreline, but beaches are nearby and you can watch the kite-surfers a kilometer off to the west. Easy to just sit and watch others run off on tours, and some who just seem to spend a day or two en route to a scuba diving location. The island is very interesting and we did take a whole day tour via a really good guide arranged by the hotel. This hotel is not really for the young set if you're looking for action and lots of hotel activities. But for people like us it's ideal. They take pride in keeping their small hotel clean and maintained (I suppose sometimes something may fall through the cracks), and we felt an almost private, catered-to feeling. Definitely very quiet and peaceful here. Our room on the ground level did not have A/C which does not seem to be a problem in the winter months (I used to work in Africa and came to dislike A/C due to getting colds/sore throats by over-relying on it, so I prefer fans). Our room did not have TV or phone which was a blessing (neither did we take our cell to keep in touch with snowfall or what our daughter was cooking for supper back home).
This is a "basic plan" way to visit Barbados, without a lot of "fringes" but definitely all we needed.
The last few days we moved to a larger hotel near Bridgetown, due to our late bookings and lack of space at P&Q and we paid a lot more. But, we got: a) a bit larger room, b) A/C, c) an expanded menu with lots of waiters, d) a big, noisy dining room, e) more hotel grandeur with marble this and that and leather sofas in the reception, f) a crowded, noisy beach with kids (I love 'em), g) the usual battle and subversion for beach chairs (which were dirty and stained from others' tanning oils), etc. And you know what? I cannot remember, for the life of me, what we ate at a single meal. But my wife and I remember almost every meal we ate at P&Q (want me to start reciting? ....especially Christmas dinner under the stars with the local astronomer giving us an informal presentation with his telescope!) Wonderful!
I am one of those people who feel that we should jealously keep our mouth shut, but these people obviously deserve the credit they get, and they have our best wishes. Our only concern is that in a few years they may burn themselves out. Margaret, please delegate a few more tasks!
