We stayed here in November 2006. Absolutely great, Tried to upgrade our room before we left UK> Staff said don't bother your room is great and it was (225)
Pool is perfect and decking allows breeze to come through.
Tried to use our 20% discount for returning and find that BA have done too good a job on selling this wonderful hotel. Staff are so cheerful, and just listen to the headwaiter singing. X Factor material. Going again...sure are.

We stayed at this hotel for a week at the beginning of January and our only regret is that we didn't book 2 weeks (oh and that we flew with Excel airways - never again!!!) On arrival at the hotel we were greeted with a delicious cool welcome drink (very welcome after a long journey!) Our room was spotless and they had placed a cot in the room for our six month old baby. We had a "mixed view" which looked out over the jacuzzis and the sea. We found the staff to be extremely friendly and our fellow guests were all interesting, fun, friendly people from all sorts of walks of life, which made the stay extra pleasant as there was always someone to chat with! We hired a car and explored a little bit but found the Happy Star restaurant at the hotel to be as reasonable as any of the other restaurants in St Lawrence Gap and the surrounding area. As we had a young baby with us it was easier for us to eat at the hotel but we were never disappointed with the food that was on offer. Breakfast was similar each morning but was filling and, we felt it was good value for money. There were always sun loungers available and the pool was clean and never too full. We would also point out that the hotel does have sun loungers on the beach for the use of guests (contrary to an earlier review). There seemed to be a wide mix of guests staying at the hotel and all seemed to be having a great time. There isn't much in the way of evening entertainment (which suited us as our baby woke us up at 6am every morning!) But those that wanted night life simply jumped in taxis or reggae buses and went into St Lawrence Gap or Bridgetown and seemed happy enough with what they found there! One thing we would mention is that those planning to windsurf out there may be disappointed to note that the windsurfing school that used to be next door to the hotel has now been closed down. Another point, which didn't bother us much but may surprise people, is that the hot water seemed to be solar powered and therefore you wouldn't get hot water very early in the morning or late in the evening. The best time to shower would be around 4 or 5pm which suited us as we would be getting back from the beach or pool at that time anyway! We would recommend a room with a view as al ot of the rooms in the hotel look out over the road or down the side of the hotel, having said that - even though we had a beautiful view, we didn't spend that much time in the room and there were plenty of places to sit an enjoy the sea view from the front of the hotel. We had a fantastic time and would definitely consider returning to this hotel again and would recommend it highly to open minded people from all walks of life looking for a relaxed, laid back holiday.

The Butterfly Beach hotel is great! It is located right on the beach and although the beaches are all public, it seems very secluded.

The Bar is pretty good - The meals are not the best in the world but good enough after a long journey (Arrival Day) but not cheap. The drinks are great. I highly recommend the fruit punch - made in a blender with ice, fresh fruit & juice!

The beaches are white and perfect like on the Holiday shows

Christchurch is a great place to stay. It seems slightly less busy than the West Coast, and definately less posh (Which is good and bad). The local food places (outside the hotels) in Christchurch seem mostly catered for locals - but that's by far the cheapest way to eat. Anywhere trying to look exclusive or expensive will be a rip-off only suitable for the Cliff Richards of the Island (he has a place over there)
Chefette - the barbados fast-food chain (equivelent to Mac D's in the UK) is really good - I can highly recommend Beef or chicken & Potato Roti which is a wrap filled with Beef & potato or Chicken & potato. YUM

One thing to be careful of are the beach traders - AKA Rude boys - no matter where you go you on the island you will find men walking up and down the beach trying to sell you something. Usually Aloe Vera they just picked or drugs (normally just weed but sometimes everything else too) If you politely decline what they are offering they will shortly leave - but just be vigilant!

The weather was the highlight for me - the wind is always warm and the days short - Sunsets from the bar (Attached) can be spectacular.

If you hate airplanes flying over then Butterfly Beach Hotel might irritate you a bit, as all of the air traffic for the island approaches from the South coast over the bay which the hotel overlooks. ou'll probably be too chilled to care (i was)

Finally the staff were really nice - The afternoon receptionist (Paul) is a credit to the hotel - anything you want to ask about - always very polite, helpful & friendly

One more very important point - opposite the hotel is the best chinese restaurant I have ever eaten at - its above the local shop (not so good) and is brilliant value for money. Try everything (like me) and the people are genuinely nice - a family run place

Just returned from 1 week hol at the Butterfly Beach Hotel. Having read reviews before the visit and exchanging a couple of emails to the reservation staff before arriving, I can justify the good reviews listed on this website. Most of the staff were very friendly. Some are a little more laid back than others, but it wasn't a problem to my wife and I as we did not expect the 'Disneyworld- have a nice day' and smiles at all times greetings by all the staff.
One thing that I really hate when I have booked a holiday is when I arrive and find that the 'whatever' star hotel I had booked into, the room was a couple of stars lower. If I book into a 2 star hotel, I don't expect Hilton (or similar) standards,if I book into a 4-5 star hotel, I do expect Hilton standards plus etc. I can say that our room at Butterfly Beach was accurate for the 2-3 star description on their website and with most other reviews from this website, being that the shower worked (and with hot water) and with lots of space to move around in, the basin area was a good reasonable size and had sufficient lighting, the air con and ceiling fan worked no problem, the tv had remote control etc. The rooms were cleaned every day with fresh towels.
I knew we were getting an 'island view' studio so I didn't expect views of the ocean, but it was no great hardship as we still had tea and toast on the balcony most mornings (studios have fridge and electric hob, not state of the art but worked a treat).
The Pool was clean (a small amount of leaves had blown into the pool on a couple of occasions, but were cleared at some point), ample in size as were the sun decks and poolside areas. It was a treat to be abe to get straight onto the beach from the poolside or sun deck and have an enjoyable walk along the beach. We were not hassled at all by anyone during the week, either at the hotel or on the beach (although asked once to sell some aloe vera but when told 'no' the guy apologised and walked away).
We ate at their 'Starfish Restaurant' a couple of times with mixed results. Some of their dishes were good, some ok. Again, we did not expect Michelin star a la carte food and we did not get it albeit, I had a lovely grilled Dorada (fish) steak meal for lunch at the Starfish for only 16 $Bds and my wife enjoyed a 'carribean' BLT.
For excellent a la carte food and service we ate at 'The Restaurant at Southsea' (in the Gap. Fantastic service/food if you are into your restaurants), the 'Tides' restaurant (just past Sandy Lane). 'Pisces' restaurant (the Gap) and 'Davids Place' (the Gap) but where we expected to pay around 4 times the amount charged at the Starfish (hotel). It is wise to pre-book in these restaurants, particularly at weekends or peak periods. Oh! and the Fish Fry night in Oistins.
We met some nice people staying at the hotel and some (4 families) of them have been visiting Barbados for years and they could not complain about the hotel for the cost either, so the Butterfly Beach must be doing something right.

We stayed 15 nights at this lovely hotel in December. I am a regular business & holiday visitor to Barbados and found the staff at this hotel to be among the friendliest and most helpful I have ever encountered on the island. The rooms were cleaned to a high standard and I noted the thorough cleaning taking place when guests checked-out and rooms were prepared for next guests. We selected this hotel for it's price and due to all the positive reviews at Trip Advisor. Okay it's not Sandy Lane or The Hilton but neither is the price. We cannot comment on restaurant or bar as we had car for whole stay and ate and drank outside. The clientel were fine and much the same as one would find at any other hotel. We would definately stay at this hotel again as long as we had a hire car for whole stay. Recomend the restaurants at St Laurence Gap & Waterfront Cafe Bridgetown. Miami/Enertprise beach is 5 mins drive away heaven. We had 1 breakfast in hotel and didn't find it particularly good for the price. A bonus for us was the fact there is no loud entertainment at night, except Kariokee on Thurs nite...this lack of loud entertainment is another reason why we chose this hotel.
If you book this hotel you won't be disappointed unless you are used to Sandy Lane.

We stayed at the Butterfly Beach for two weeks in December.
People have to remember this is only a 3 star hotel - we found it spotlessly clean, on a lovely (but small) beach and can honestly say we had nothing to complain about at all.
We did hire a car for the two weeks and ate out every night so can't really comment on the evening meals.
Breakfast was lovely though - especially if you get them to cook fresh eggs which they are happy to do!
Highly recommend one of the catamaran cruises which are a great day out.
If you are looking for a value for money hotel then Butterfly beach is perfect. As someone else said - the staff are laid back...not miserable.
I would say the hotel is mostly suited to couples and families.
Enjoy - we were sorry to leave.

Just got back from a very enjoyable week staying at Butterfly Beach. The hotel could not be described as The Ritz as it is clearly a budget hotel compared to some of the other flashy hotels on the island. However, you've just got to make the most of it and enjoy the money that you have saved by not staying in an expensive hotel by spending your cash on some great trips and quality restaurants that the area has to offer.

For me what makes the hotel is the proximity to the beach and the crystal blue sea - pure heaven. There are plenty of sun loungers to use and the pool is of a good size (although the pool was a little grubby). The major criticism of the outside area is that the wordwork could have benefitted from a lick of white paint to brighten up the surroundings - a day's job that could have made the outdoor experience more enjoyable.

We found that the staff were generally friendly and approachable.
The lady who works in the gift shop was particularly smiley and friendly.

Our room had a great view of the sea and had an excellent air conditioning unit and ceiling fan. The room was pretty basic but had everything that you would need for a week. The bathroom could only be described as very basic, but hey...for how long you spend in there, who cares!

We would strongly recommend taking a catarmaran cruise along the west coast of the island with the highlight being a swim with the turtles -excellent. Also make sure that you book yourself on Ted's Tours - a really funny guy who drives a big bus around the island telling stories and make hiliarous puns about random things!!

Food wise, we jumped on a reggae bus into the Gap every night. Riding the buses was a real experience as it was an opportunity to mix with the locals in the close confines of a minibus to the sound of very loud, basey raggae music!! Cost only around 50p each way for a ride. The Gap itself was a lot quieter than I imagined as there is a noticable absence of any tacky touristy shops that you would generally expect in a holiday resort. The area is basically a collection of restaurants, a few bars and hotels. However, the restaurants are really good - our favourites being Cafe Sol and David's Place.

As a hotel that does not try and be anything other than a budget hotel, I would recommend staying there. Don't be afraid to use the reggae buses as they are very safe and make the most of all the excellent trips on offer around the island. You then can't fail to have a top holiday!
