The Butterfly Beach Hotel was the last of three places we stayed while on our honeymoon in July 2007, and very good for the price. Admittedly it was our least favourite of the three, but you can hardly compare a 2-3 star hotel with the likes of The Crane. Had we nothing else to compare it to, I'm sure the Butterfly Beach would have impressed me more.
Despite other reviewers complaining about rude or surly staff, we found the service to be just fine. Candace at the front desk was particularly pleasant and helpful. Coming directly from a different hotel, we arrived much earlier than check-in time so that our rooms were not yet ready, but the front desk was wonderful about it. They offered to lock up our luggage in a secure room so that we would be free to wander around, and gave us rum punch while we waited. They also made suggestions for what to do while we waited, such as exploring the stores across the street, relaxing by the pool, etc. We decided to grab a snack and a drink at the restaurant (which has the most incredible view of the turquoise ocean). I ordered some juice and my husband ordered a beer, and were pleasantly surprised when the waitress arrived with my juice and two beers, as we had arrived during the noon happy hour! (Very nice start to our stay!)
Our room was spacious and air-conditioned, which was nice. There was a kitchenette with a refrigerator, stove, sink, cookware and dishes, though the hotel did not provide dish soap. The other two hotels we had stayed at previously had provided dish soap, so we were a bit surprised to find that the Butterfly Beach did not. There is a tv with limited channels, but internet access is available for a nominal fee. There is a kiosk in the lobby, but we had a laptop, and simply paid for blocks of time to be used at our leisure.
Myy only real problem with the room was that there were lots of tiny mosquitoes flying around all the time since the windows are covered with slats rather than glass.
The beaches were absolutely perfect. Many people have complained about having limited access to the beaches, but I have no idea what they're talking about!
To the left of the sundeck and restaurant is a ramp down to a small stretch of beach. When the tide is out during the day, you can trek further to a lovely little cove where tiny fish jump out of the water. It seems that no one ever bothered to venture that far, as we spent one afternoon with the beach completely to ourselves. (If you forget to head back to the hotel before the tide comes back in, just hop onto the road and walk back that way)
To the right of the main pool, there is a gate to a much larger, busier beach. I suppose it can be a bit trickier to get onto the beach when the tide is in, but just hop along the stones and you'll be fine!
The hotel hosts a Manager's Rum Punch Party each week, and though our fellow guests didn't really seem to be the mingling type, we had a nice chat with the manager who, upon learning that we were on our honeymoon, arranged for a bottle of champagne to be placed in our room! The next evening, we enjoyed some lovely chilled champagne on our balcony, listening to the crickets and wind rustling. (That is one of my fondest memories of our trip, now that I think about it.)
The hotel is very conveniently located, between Oistins and the St. Lawrence Gap. We walked to Oistins a few times, for groceries during the day, and the Oistins Fish Fry at night!
We went to the St. Lawrence Gap twice during our stay at the Butterfly Beach, and took a taxi both times, as we found it to be fairly inexpensive. In fact, the entire time we were on the island, we never paid more than $30BBD for a taxi ride, not even to go from the east coast to just shy of the west coast. The trips to St. Lawrence Gap were between $10-15BBD.
On our last day, we decided that we want to book a spot on the Jolly Roger Pirate Ship in Bridgetown. (We're young, we do silly things like that!) The front desk arranged it all for us, so that all we had to do was head downstairs and wait for our shuttle.
All in all, this was a very pleasant experience.
