“Great hotel. Great staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2010

We stayed at the Waves hotel for ten days arriving home on the 22/10/2010. We had a fantastic break. It is the fourt time we have stayed at this hotel. The first time was in 2001 and the latest 2007. For once we were not ready to leave. Usually after eight or nine days we are redy to come home but this time we could have stayed for another week and it still would have been too short. The rooms and public areas have been updated. It now has a more modern feel. We have noticed over the years that the beach has been shrinking but they still seem to manage to get enough sun beds out. The food in the three restaurants was even better than before. The breakfast menu rotated on a daily basis but there is enough choice to have a different meal each day. There is still a certain amount of construction going on but this is not unduly obtrusive. Overall we were sorry to leave.

this is the first time i have ever felt the need to place a review.
Virgin were excellent both outand inbound best transatlantic experience to date.
On arrival room was not ready and would have to move the following day, that room was still damp from all the rain and eventually settled for what they called their hospitality room which was small but was glad to unpack properly.
rooms were very well serviced and staff were as would be be expected.
food and drink was good, however table service was slow resulting in guests leaving their tables before desert or coffee.
HIred a open seater car for three days but found the traffic impossible worse than any uk city centre. This was our tenth visit to the carabbian in eight years but i have to say barbados is not close to the other islands and countries visited sorry.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2010

My husband and I returned from two lovely weeks at Waves on 13th October. Over the last 15 years we've stayed all over the Caribbean and visited Barbados a total of 7 times staying at various all inclusive resorts on the West Coat - Waves is without a doubt the best in our opinion. Just for information we hadn't stayed at this hotel prior to its refurbishment earlier in the year.

We travelled out with Virgin Upper Class and as usual received excellent service. On arrival at the hotel we were given a rum punch (not great for a teetotal like myself but hubbie enjoyed the two drinks and a coca cola followed for me!) We had booked a duplex room but were shown into a Deluxe Ocean View and told that our room wasn't available for another two days due to a maintenance issue. The whole idea of this holiday was for relaxation so we weren't prepared to accept the move. However, on returning to reception Ludo (sorry about the spelling) and his wife, Janet (the owners of Waves) were on hand to help us out and within 10 minutes we had come to an ideal solution. We remained in the Deluxe Ocean View room for 14 nights and got a refund for the difference - the cheque was waiting for us when we arrived home - thank you Virgin for fantastic customer service.

THE ROOMS
Our room was the best we've ever had in Barbados - it was huge with lovely french doors onto an extremely large and very private balcony. The bedrooms have the most wonderful beds and ours had two large sofa's, a dressing room and a large bathroom with shower. The whole hotel is very tastefully decorated - thanks to Janet. There is coffee making facilities in the bedroom as well as a stocked fridge - we asked for wine, beer and soft drinks and that was exactly what we got. The flat screen TV's also have a built in DVD and we borrowed DVD's from reception on a couple of rainy afternoons. The toiletries in the bathrooms were of a very high quality but I understand that even better ones are on order! The bath towels are a little small but it was lovely to have bathrobes available. The towels for the beach were delivered each evening and we never had any problems getting extra from housekeeping - thanks Lolitta.

THE RESTAURANTS
There are 3 restaurants to choose from which I won't go into detail about as others have already done that. East was our favourite but all the food was excellent. Whilst the service can be slow - this is something we personally prefer, rather than being rushed - so it was never a problem to us. Rosalyn in East is an absolute gem and the sushi is excellent. Thanks for a lovely anniversary meal.

THE BEACH
The beach at the hotel is only small but perfectly adequate - it does change depending on the weather as to the width of the beach. We walked up the beach daily all the way to The Cliff but you can go further on some days. The sea from the Waves beach is crystal clear and very warm.

THE POOLS
We stayed at the spa side pool for the two weeks. Although there was some work going on it didn't spoil our peace and quiet. The sunloungers are really comfortable and drinks are served by a waitress each hour - although you can go to the bar more often.

THE SPA
We have been to many spa resorts including a number of visits to La Source in Grenada. The complimentary treatments are excellent particularly the Back and Shoulder Shimmy. Both Ria and Desearee gave the best back massages that we have ever had - if we could, they'd have been coming home with us! Thanks Ladies!

RECEPTION
There is always someone at reception to help out and I should mention Susan and Kathy in particular who must have got fedup seeing Mrs Watts on her way down to ask more questions. However, they treated every request with a smile and excellent service.

MANAGEMENT
Kathy Gaskin is the General Manager at Waves and a real professional. She's always on hand and runs a very well managed hotel.

I couldn't possibly manage to mention all the exceptional staff that work at Waves - surfice it to say that they really special.

Yes we were at Waves during the thunderstorms and rain - to put this into context many of the other hotels on the West Coast also flooded. What I can say is that every member of staff available was at the hotel well into the early hours to resolve the problem including Ludo.

The one and only downside for us was that the gym was very basic and not adequate for a real workout.

If you're heading out to Waves you'll have a lovely relaxing holiday - it's a quiet relaxed hotel. If you're looking for relaxation then this is the place for you. Enjoy!

Stayed at Waves for 2 weeks back end of September beginning October. Don’t think that this hotel deserves a four star rating and think that for what we paid we didn’t get the service we expected.

Barbados is a fantastic place with some great things to see, do and enjoy. Oh, and that despite the worst flooding Barbados has seen since 1970! Even the bajans thought the rain was unusual – and everything shuts when it rains as much as it did!

We feel a bit let down by the hotel in some ways, but more so the service we received. There are both good and bad points to the hotel that we found, but we still had a great holiday and made the most of being away, getting out and about.

The vast majority of guests in the hotel were very friendly, partly I think that this is because it was in the main British people staying.

Take plenty of mosquito repellent. We did and still got bitten loads – like everyone else! I think the hotel could make more of an effort to keep them away with citronella candles or something in the open areas, both day and night

Not sure when the lift is going to be built, but the 55 steps to the 3rd floor day, night and anytime in between soon began to annoy us. Not because of the walking, but because there appeared to be lots of mosquito’s in this area! To be honest, we were glad of the walk!

There is a bar on the decking that was never open when we were there, despite the hotel being busy. During the rain our room did have water leaking down the wall – and only about 30cm from the tv and electric points, which was worrying!

Recommendations for getting out and about

• Helicopter tour of island
• Jeep safari
• Oistins
• Daphne’s
• Crane Beach / Village

Hire a car – it is so easy to get around and very cheap! We hired one for a day which was about £70 and we still had half a tank of petrol when we gave it back!

If you go to oistins, get the bus. It’s an experience! We got a taxi back to the hotel and it was only 50 barbados dollars, so not bad at all. Although the taxi’s leave something to be desired, the one from oistins didn’t have a working speedo!

Use the spa vouchers, but be warned, if you have the back and shoulder shimmy – be prepared for the pain! Ouch!

Hotel good points:
• Netting to prevent birds getting into restaurant
• Rooms decorated well
• Good comfortable beds!
• Re-stocked mini bar
• Cocktail menu and drink choices were good, even making cocktails not on the list regularly
• Beds on the decking good for a snooze!
• Quality of food (when you got it) was good.

Hotel bad points:

• Cockroaches in Garden Restaurant flying around, landing on people (including me) whilst eating dinner
• Surly staff - in particular Susan on reception. Example, each night (supposedly) new beach towels brought to room. Two consecutive days we did not have clean beach towels, despite informing reception. On the third day we were going out and needed a towel, but reception could not provide a clean one until the afternoon. Anyway, to cut long story short, we were given 2 fresh towels an hour after asking (requesting), but Susan on reception referred to us with an attitude that I would not expect to receive in a fast food restaurant, never mind a 4 star hotel
• Only 1 beach towel per person per day, which didn’t really cover the beds around the pool
• Bathroom towels not particularly good quality and small!
• Loungers around the pool in the main hotel were very uncomfortable as they did not recline
• Limited food choices and repetitive menu – no vegetarian options on some menus meant having to speak to reception, then the chef to arrange something, so taking the relaxing part of the day way by asking questions, returning for set time and then having to go through choices
• No plug point near mirror for hairdryer
• Long waiting times for dinner – sometimes from arriving in restaurants and getting starters would be 50 minutes!
• Arriving for dinner reservation and being told to return 20 minutes later as no tables free!
• One evening we could hear staff in one of the restaurants talking about running out of water glasses because it was so full. This night was a buffet and as we returned to our table with dessert, we realised our water glasses had been removed, but our bar drinks remained. Very strange!
• The worst gym I have ever been in my life. Machines broken, not working etc
• Portion control in East restaurant seemed small. We had to eat desserts which is not like us!

Waves Hotel Barbados was the most relaxing week of our 2 week trip touring the Carribean. Hotel has recently been upgraded and our room was lovely with a spacious shower room, dressing room, lounge area, king size bed and balcony overlooking the sea. The food was excellent with 3 restaurants to choose from. Our deal was all inclusive so I took great pleasure in working my way through the cocktail list. All staff were very helpful and friendly. My special comment goes to the lady who cooked every type of egg imaginable at breakfast time! I recommed the jeep safari around the island, great fun, very informative and a great way to see the island.

Have travelled with the family to Barbados and other Caribbean Islands many times. We got a good deal for our holiday and therefore didn't know what to expect ? When we pulled up outside I was initially disapointed - until we got inside that was !! The view was amazing and the staff were so friendly. The hotel was really well decorated with comfortable modern decor and the four poster beds dotted along the decking looked and were amazing !!
The staff were so friendly in fact probably the friendliest staff we've encountered in the Caribbean. The fact that the hotel is quite small means that you get to know staff and guests quite well, intimate and relaxed.
We were so impressed with the rooms, we had two next door to eachother as we were travelling with a 10 and 16yr old. Big air conditioned room with dressing area which was fab, robes, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, decent sized bathroom with toiletries, ipod docking station, flat screen TV, mini bar stocked with water and coke as well as half bottles of rum and vodka, free of charge !! the best bit of all was the gorgeous huge bed and fab pillows!! We all slept so well.
Highlight of the the trip for us was actually the food, good quality buffet at lunchtimes, excellent (a la carte) food in the Seascape and amazing food in the East!! (Make sure you try the sushi) All inclusive wine was actually good too !!
Beach was good but small and the pool at the Adult area was nice although the pool area in the main building is quite small and in a walled courtyard.
Our 10yr old was able to roam freely around the hotel and felt at ease ashe knew all the staff. He particularly liked it in the after hours bar that was open during the day to play pool and watch any sporting activities . The staff were fantastic with him and he's desperate to go back !! Teenage daughter really enjoyed the free spa tratments and the entertainment which I thought was fantastic.
All in all we had a fantastic holiday, loved the staff, food, rooms, relaxed atmosphere and would definitely recommend this hotel as a very good value for money holiday.

I have just got back from a week at Waves for a friends' wedding (2nd to the 9th October) . Felt I needed to write a review, to give a more balanced account. On the Sunday night the hotel had some problems with flooding, because of a torrential downpour that evening. In fact the whole of the island suffered flooding and damage as this was a much heavier downpour than usually expected. The wedding dress was stored in our room which flooded, but the staff could not have done more to help. Even the manager was there mopping up. I know some guests had to move rooms, but this was caused by Mother Nature and was something out of the hotel’s control.

We stayed in the garden area, which was very pretty and our room was very comfortable. The mini bar was restocked daily. The room was cleaned daily, and towels changed (the housekeeping ladies were lovely). The noisy insects/frogs/bats took a little getting used to, but no worse than crickets. The mosquitoes were prolific, especially around the garden area (so pack lots of Deet!). We had an issue with the travel plug adaptors in the garden area, as the sockets did not match the USA/Caribbean adaptors we had brought in the UK and on the Island. There was a UK adaptor/extension lead in our room which the I-pod dock was plugged into.

The weather improved vastly from Monday onwards, and the day of the wedding was fantastic (too hot if anything!). The staff at Waves made it such a special day for my friends, especially the wedding co-coordinator Susan.

The food in the three restaurants was fantastic. I am vegetarian and the choice available was great. The sushi in East was lovely, and we all enjoyed the Caribbean cuisine in the garden (unfortunately the Garden restaurant was a little to hot to sit in for us). Great lunch buffet in Seascape, and wonderful selection of eggs at breakfast. We only ate out of the hotel once- visiting Oistins Friday fish fry which was brilliant.

The waiting and bar staff were great too, especially Nathaniel and Jacob. Very nice selection of cocktails were available. The Virgin rep was lovely, and always seemed to be available in reception.

It was a lovely place to stay for couples, but not so for families as there were no facilities for children. Because of the amount of steps around the hotel and down to the beach it would not be ideal for disabled or infirm guests.

We really enjoyed the beach, there were loungers available and the beach was clean. There were snorkels available to use, and kayaks. The complimentary catamaran trip was excellent- snorkeling with the turtles was the highlight of the holiday for me.

The complimentary spa treatments were also excellent, and the therapists were lovely ladies too. The back and shoulder massage is highly recommended, especially before your flight home.

I would definitely return to Waves, as this was one of the best holidays I have ever had. Our party had some issues with Virgin before we left, so I would be slightly reluctant to book through Virgin again.
