We stayed at Waves for one week going out November 12th - have been to Barbados twice before...
Waves is a good hotel...there are many great things about it but for me I felt just a tiny bit like it had not lived up to expectation...mostly from a service perspective...
We arrived early eveing and were checked in efficiently and quickly...the room on the Spa side of the hotel was superb, massive, really clean and modern and with the comfiest bed and pillows I have ever encountered anywhere in the world - nothing bad to say about the room at all and some really nice touches...all eletrical points adapted for UK plugs, mini bar, really good quality towels and linen, modern flooring, nice size balcony etc...
Sunbathing - they have two pools - one by the spa that is very pretty - lots of palm trees etc and one on the first floor that is smaller with comfier sunbeds but unfortunately does not get any sun after 13.30 so you if you want to sunbathe for a tan you have to move from there after this time - and of course there is the beach which is lovely and there is also a deck overlooking the beach...no complaints here...again really comfy sunbeds....
Dining - 3 restaurants....all ala carte at night (an Asian Fusion type place, an Italian and a mixed/traditional one) all of which you have to make a reservation for and one for breakfast and lunch each day which is buffet style. I found the food to be ok - good selection, well prepared, plenty of choice etc...Where they did fall down tho is dependant on which staff was on each day the service could be really slow...and I know about being on Barbados time...but to me 50 mins to wait to order after being seated is ludicrous....also they were not so hot on replenishing things that had run out at breakfast...there was more than one occasion were there were not enough plates etc and some of the food had just gone never to be seen again as early as 8am on a breakfast that ran until 10.30 etc...some of the staff were great (especially Sandra who seemed to do a bit of everything and is an absolute credit to the place) but some were shockingly slow and sullen...
The drinks - Very good here - quality of alcohol seemed to be better than in other places I have stayed in the past...they also had sparkling white (it was an Asti I think) as part of the AI which I thought was really good as I have paid for this in other places...again the service could be variable on the bar...the younger tall bar man very good, but we had a night with an older guy on who was really slow and seemed a bit drunk himself...but this was only once
Niggles: Having a set time to be able to change your beach towel...5pm! Bit of a pain as i like a nap at this time but that is how it goes at Waves
If you don't book your spa treatments as soon as you get there you'll not get in...they will be booked up - I managed to get in for the day we were coming home and then when I turned up they did not have the booking...but to be fair when I complained about this in a polite way they did squeeze me in later on that day
It's a bit on the older side....fine for some but I felt a tiny bit bored with it later on in the evening...though if you are there to relax and want to be in bed earlyish most nights it will suit you down to the ground
Trip to Oistens (organised through the hotel)...can't fault Oistens but the driver spent the whole journey flirting with one of the guests sat up front....it felt unsafe as he did not have full attention on the road and it was a long journey
Courtesty room when going home was not an actual room with air con etc...it was the shower room in the spa and was swelteringly hot...came out sweatier than when I went in
All in all Waves is a good hotel...the food, drink and rooms are better than other places that I have stayed but the service is just ok...if they could get this right this would an amazing hotel...oh yes...thinks it's adults only...(which I was more than happy with) as did not see any kids but I could be wrong...worth knowing if you have kids as there will be nothing for them to do
Would I go again...Yes I would...but there are other places I will try first...
