We stayed at the Waves for a week from 17 September, I am 22 and my boyfriend is 27 and we wanted somewhere that was more of an adult hotel as although I love children we wanted a holiday where we could relax wihtout children running round and the Waves was perfect! Obviously if you are a family with young children I would not reccomend but the hotel was amazing!
We upgraded to a Superior Ocanfront room which was well worth it, the shower was much better and the facilities and space much nicer than the standard spa rooms and had the most beautiful views in the evening. I would highly recommend an upgrade. Our return flight was in the evening and the hotel let us use one of the spa rooms so we could have a shower and change before leaving for the airport.
Upon our arrival at the hotel there had been a powercut which was unfortunate but we were immediately handed a lovely cocktail and shown to where the BBQ was to get some food as it was the evening when we arrived.
All three restaurants are lovely but do require booking, East was our favourite by far and we ate here most nights.
The staff were always pleasent and unlike other reviews we did not find them rude in any way. We would often leave a tip after our evening meal as the staff were so kind and attentive and work long hours, after working as a waitress myself I know how much I relied on tips.
The beach was lovely but only very small but the beaches in Barbados are all public and none are privately owned so you can walk along and find a more quiet beach not far away. The locals do come around selling items and will offer these to you, they are lovely people so we would chat to them for a minute and politely say we didnt want to buy anything and they would then leave us alone unless we approached them which was nice.
We went to Bridgetown for the day as we were told the duty free shopping was good but we were dissapointed, we found a lot of people coming up to us trying to sell items and they were very pushy unlike the locals we had encountered on the beach we did have to be quite rude in the end.
We did not go on the catermran trip run by the hotel as this was fully booked and we were glad of this once we saw it. The boat was very small and the trip not very long. We booked a trip through Cool Runnings who can easily be found on the internet and have an office in Bridgtown. It cost $90US each and included a lovely lunch, unlimited drinks including alcohol and some amazing punch. The trip lasted most of the day and was so much fun the crew were so lovely, I bought a Cool Runnings t-shirt and all the crew signed it and wrote lovely messages on it for me. It was also great for kids who may not be such compentent swimmers as the crew go into the sea with you with a buoy to hold on to. They feed the turtles so they come up very close but they are calm animals they wont bite. We then also went to a shipwreck and got to see all of the beautiful fish. They will pick you up from your hotel and drop you back off at no extra cost, we booked very last minute and there was no problems booking at all but I would advise to book in advance to avoid disspointment.
We also used the local buses, the yellow buses are $2US each and takes you anywhere on the island and is such an experience you shouldnt miss! Be sure to hold on tight though and if you get car sick easily it may be wise to give this a miss but my boyfriend and I loved it we wish the buses back here in the UK were more like this!
One day we hopped on the bus to Holetown where the shops were much better than Bridgetown, there were a lot of more upmarket expensive shops and also some nice cheap shops too it's well worth a visit whatever your budget!
We did not use the spa so I can not really comment on this. Also breakfast time does get very busy and the food does get used up quickly so any late risers may be dissapointed. However, beacuse of the time difference in the UK we were always up early.
I would highly recommend the Waves to anyone it was an amazing relaxing holiday - just what we needed!
