“Beautiful hotel, wonderful staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

This is the loveliest hotel. It is by no means a large hotel but that makes it even nicer. The staff are fantastic, obliging and friendly. The restaurant is extremely good, where BBQ evenings are fantastic and the buffet which happens once a week is very good with a wonderful choice of food. Every evening there is some kind of entertainment. The rooms are very comfortable.
Special mention should be made for Harold's Bar which is like a little beach bar with seating for lunch. Harold's in a lovely meeting place where guests mingle and pass the time of day and as many of the guests are returning guests there is a lot of catching up from year to year.
Any hotel which gets a returning number of guests in the numbers the Sandpiper gets must certainly being doing something right.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Sandpiper on the way to Mustique. The rooms and suites are spread around the garden which would be worth a visit in its own right - a wonderful combination of architectural shapes and flowering shrubs and trees. Our suite was very spacious and included a fully equipped galley kitchen - useful for making snack lunches. The staff are universally cheerful, polite and fully professional. The management here must be seriously good. What comes as an unexpected bonus is the extremely high standard of cooking: every single dish at dinner was a winner with unusual combinations such as carrot and ginger soup. The chefs are versatile so that veal Milanese is cooked with the same skill as a West Indian curry At breakfast there is a vast array of buffet dishes and ( a great blessing) an industrial toaster. I should also mention the delightful interior of the dining room which at night is light by lantern type illumination and looks very exotic. The beach is not very long but ample for the number of guests.
This is not a place to go an all action holiday but otherwise it would be hard to do better.

From the moment you arrive, it is clear that this is a truly wonderful and special hotel. There are four factors which justify this statement:

1. Location: The Sandpiper is situated in the most central and beautiful part of St James which is undoubtedly the most desirable part of the island. The hotel grounds are delightful, and carefully looked after, and it is well worth going on the garden tour where you can learn about the huge range of tropical plants and how they are cared for.

2. Service: This is truly 5 star, where the staff go every extra inch possible to make your stay the most memorable. Little touches such as free internet, sorbets delivered to you every morning, and a wide range of free sports activities all help but it is the outstanding personable service which makes the real difference.

3. Food: The dining experience is very good indeed, with an excellent and varied menu, superb food quality, and interesting range of wines set in a very attractive dining room.

4. Ambience. The magical ingredient of the Sandpiper is its ambience, It is quite a small hotel and has a great intimate family feel. Indeed the owners are often around and hold a weekly cocktail party, where you can meet other guests. You are made to feel extremely welcome, yet the staff also do their utmost to respect your privacy.

I can fully understand why the Sandpiper Hotel has such a high position in the Tripadvisor league table - it fully deserves it.

Room Tip: A garden room is perfectly adequate for two people.

We stayed at the Sandpiper for a week following a stay at the sister-hotel and neighbour Coral Reef Club (reviewed separately). Both hotels are owned by the same O'Hara family who have been stamping their timeless colonial mark on them for the last 50+ years.

Whilst we thoroughly enjoyed the Sandpiper hotel, and especially the food, or at least the 'food experience' which we found to be better and more personal than at the CRC, our overrall preference was for the CRC.

The Sandpiper hotel is, and feels, MUCH smaller than the CRC and the site is shaped sideways-on to the sea which means less coastline and all the rooms/facilities/paths stretched in a line from road via the road, reception, pool, bar, restaurant, pool bar to the sea. Our garden room was far more compact, and less private than at the CRC, and rather annoyingly adjoined the main thoroughfare path, so there was limited privacy for us on the ground floor. We also adjoined (literally) the stand where the nightly entertainment took place.

Parking is across the busy road in a car park rather than on-site and the whole feel of the place is a little claustrophobic after the very open and expansive/spacious feel of the CRC.

The breach bar is a nice touch, and is popular under the control of Harold, who clearly regards it as his fiefdom.

Its easy to walk into town (Holetown) from the Sandpiper - much more so than from the CRC.

Room Tip: Do not pick a downstairs garden room along the main resort path

My wife and I have just returned from a 10 day holiday at the Sandpiper that we can only describe as a stay in Paradise. The friendly, helpful happy staff make this beautiful hotel an experience to remember. Great location with wonderful garden. One of the few hotels that is worth goIng back to!

I had an amazing stay at the Sandpiper with friends. This is not the first time I have stayed at this beautiful hotel but it seems to get better each time I stay there. We had the half board (MAP) option and although we could have gone to other hotels to eat, we prefered to dine at the Sandpiper each evening as there was such a large choice. The only gripe was that my bedroom was very near to the restaurant and bar area and on a couple of nights, I had to phone reception as music was being played after 11.30pm. The music stopped as soon as I complained. I hope to return next year.

We have just spent 3 weeks at this superbly run hotel. We were on the half-board plan and in the whole 21 days, we never went out for a meal, because the food was SO good! The menu is changed weekly, and every day there are "specials" to choose from , should one wish to do so. The dining room is very pretty and all the staff are most attentive and helpful. The bedrooms and bathrooms are very well appointed and all bed linen and bathroom towels and beach towels are changed daily, more if you so wish. The setting is beautiful with vibrant plants and shady trees. There is even a Garden Tour each Thursday. The beach loungers are very comfortable and iced water is brought to you on a regular basis. Delicious fruit sorbets are also brought to your chairs every morning at 11.00. We really hope to return next year to this idyllic hotel!

Room Tip: All the rooms are very good and the beds extremely comfortable, with good sized patios or balconies...
