My Wife and I spent a week away from the kids at Mango Bay at the end of February. We had a fabulous time and I can only echo the numerous positive reviews that this hotel has had on Trip Advisor. After a rather bumpy flight we were met by our Virgin rep and after a short delay we were allocated to our taxi and arrived at the hotel at approx 7pm. We were met by friendly staff and given a guided tour of the complex before being shown upto our room. This is not a large hotel by Barbados standards which means you tend to see the same people at meals and make friends easily. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff cannot do enough for you. We paid a bit extra for an ocean view room and were lucky enough to be upgraded to one of two Penthouse suites. It was not until the next morning when the sun was up that we realised the full beauty of the location and the views across the bay. The room was great with own plunge pool but I wouldn't have paid the $2500 per night that they advertise on the website for these rooms. The shower had a tendency to flood as did the fancy sinks that dribbled and flooded the bathroom on one occassion. The bubbles in the plunge pool had a mind of there own and were quite noisy for our room and rooms underneath. Having said this the flat screen plasma tv in the lounge and bedroom made up for this. I would definitely recommend spending a bit more for a ocean view as you are away from the outside pubs and clubs, that can be noisy at weekends, which are right next to the standard accommodation. However the sound of the sea does take some getting used to. The weather was fantastic, with temp of mid 80's all week with a cool breeze and the odd bit of cloud cover. We had a few showers but with 30 mins the sun was out again. We went armed with mosquito spray but did not find them a problem at all, probably due to the time of year we went but watch out for the sand fleas. They bite too.
The meals come thick and fast and although the portions are not huge I never felt hungry. You could have three courses at lunch and dinner as well as afternoon tea if you wanted. It wasn't fine cuisine but it was very acceptable with free wine as much as you wanted. You do have to book your meals and I would recommend booking the following days time when you leave the restaurant to avoid eating very early or very late.
The facilities are ok, with a pool, guest room with satellite tv and free internet access. The beach is narrow and the sun beds are close together, and despite the new rules people were down early with towels so be warned. I would also recommend the free trips that the hotel lays on. The glass bottom boat and the catamaran trips were well worth it although we found Bridgetown a bit of a let down. I would also recommend the jeep safari which isn't free but it will show you most of the island in 6 hours.
Overall we had a great time in Barbados which is paradise. This hotel is not for families with kids, but for people wanting to relax in good surroundings, with friendly staff you can't go wrong at Mango Bay.
