“JUST okay ......but wish we had stayed somewhere nicer”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2010

My husband and I stayed at the Beach view from may29th-june 6th. This was a Birthday present and i was not real excited when i saw the place. My husband and I have been to six Caribbean islands and also to Mexico and Hawaii. so we know what we like. I want to say that we are not snobs nor do we have tastes beyond just your normal hard worker looking for a nice place to stay for a week's holiday. So please note i just want other travelers to know exactly what to expect, so as not to get their hopes up, only to be as sorely disappointed as we were. The beach view is not a resort but an apartment building that backs up to someone's shack of a house. Which you can see from the parking lot just over the fence. Please read the negatives as it is true what another traveler said about the barking dogs and crowing rooster. The dogs barked constantly and the rooster crowed incessantly. We were given the worst of the rooms, as we got the ground floor and our television was not the flat screen that you see in someone elses photo but a small old 20 inch. We had ants (the small ones) in full force all over our bathroom floor every day, and a view of the parking lot from our bathroom and kitchen windows, although if we sat on the patio we could see the pool. The breakfast was limited just a bagel or toast and an egg with bacon on bread or a small cup of granola mixed with yogurt, extra was 10.00 American for a slice of banana bread with a bagel. The mosquito's are terrible so bring bug spray. The bed was extremely hard and we woke up every morning with terrible back aches. I have to say we were very disappointed overall with Barbados. The only saving grace was the weather was hot and sunny the whole week only raining a bit on our last day. We rode the buses every day for something to do and went to Holetown, which is very small. We shopped at their "mall' which was like 9 shops and chattel village is quaint for 18 dollar American t-shirts and post cards. If you like something to do when you travel it can get boring petty fast as there are no activities like pool bingo, volleyball and planned activities that nicer places offer. We also rode the rasta bus (the yellow buses) to Bridgetown once and shopped for 3 hours. Just know that if you purchase clothing it all smells very musty and we washed ours in the washer and dryer before packing any purchases. We only ate out 3 times. JUST GRILLIN in Holetown is inexpensive as has very good fish, also the surfside was 60 dollars with a shared desert and 2 sodas. The beach is across the street but it smelled terrible. We went for a very short walk as it is covered with fish heads from the paynes bay fish market that sits on it and very narrow so not a lot to sit and sun yourself. If you could stand the smell. We were choking one day while waiting for the bus as the bus stand is right near the beach. Speaking of choking every day as we were laying by the pool (since there was nothing else to do) we could smell a terrible acrid smoke smell from the local neighbor on the hill. He was constantly burning something and the smoke was intoxicating and very irritating to our lungs. Also along with the ants in the bathroom we had HUGE bug in the room the housed the washer and dryer one night we discovered it while laundering. Luckily we only saw the one. So in Summary you get what you pay for, we actually were considering booking at the Crane after 2 uncomfortable nights at the beach view, but since we booked as a package we figured we would just stick it out. But kept wishing we had gone back to Grand Cayman which is beautiful and we had a lot of fun at the MORIITT'S. Lot's of things to do there and gorgeous clean beaches. If you go to Barbados i think 4 days is plenty for what it offers and the beach view is cheap but nothing grand.

bvbarbados, Manager at Beach View, responded to this review, June 15, 2010
Normally we do not respond to guest comments as we feel that person’s feelings about a vacation should be respected. In this case, we feel that a lot of the information is misleading both about ourselves and about Barbados and deserves a response. We have attempted to address the most salient points.

Firstly we have to point out that as a destination Barbados is completely different to Mexico and Hawaii. The most similar experience in Barbados would be an all-inclusive or a larger resort. Beach View is not a resort property and we do not pretend to be. The first page of our website states that we are an ‘all suite self-catering condo hotel’. We do not mention ‘resort’ on our website.

We do back on to a small local neighbourhood which is fenced off from the parking lot. The parking lot separates the neighbourhood from our buildings. Like any neighbourhood in the world, you will encounter local flavour. We would like to point out that we find it a bit insulting to refer to the neighbourhood as ‘someone’s shack of a house’ as the chattel house is a unique feature of Barbadian culture and architecture and is the typical home of many Barbadians.

We respectfully disagree with the comment that they were given 'the worst of the rooms'. Their room was ground floor and on arrival, they asked to move to a higher floor. At the time, the hotel was completely full and there were no alternative rooms available (on any floor) so we could not accommodate their request. Please note that we do not guarantee high floor rooms to any reservations and if it is requested at time of booking (which in this case it was not) we will make our best efforts to accommodate.

Management never received a single complaint from these guests when they were in house about bugs or ants in their room, which would have been a more suitable time to address the issue rather than to wait until they are home to comment on Trip Advisor. We can assure you that if we had known we would have done our best to solve the problem. As a matter of information, we do regularly spray for pests.

Regarding breakfast: we have a small café that serves breakfast, we do not advertise nor do we have a large full-service restaurant which appears to be what they were looking for. Continental breakfast was included for these guests, who did get the option of egg and bacon sandwiches although this is not typical of a continental breakfast. The US$ 10 that they are referring to was not for 1 slice of banana bread and a bagel, but rather because they were asking for a second breakfast on top of what they had already had. The café owner went above and beyond by giving them additional breakfasts on another occasion at no extra charge. This is not mentioned in the review.

Yes, there are no organized activities at the hotel but as an island, we do have a lot to offer; at our reception we have a large amount of information on tours and other activities that can be enjoyed and we also give a handout on arrival of different things to do on the island. Beach View is a great base for the more independent traveler.

The beach directly in front of the hotel is great for snorkeling, and a 5 – 10 minute walk down the beach will bring you to a larger beach area with sun loungers and umbrellas to rent. Incidentally this is the same beach where the catamarans dock to feed the turtles so it is a very popular beach. It is true that sometimes fisherman clean their catch on the beach in front of the market but this is part of the local culture although we agree not necessarily the best experience for a visitor.

We would like to stress again that if one is looking for a large property with many facilities and organized activities within the hotel, then Beach View cannot provide this. We are a small, family-run condo hotel offering a more personalized guest experience and comfortable, self-catering apartment suites.

We regret that you had such an unpleasant experience in Barbados and at Beach View. Our guest satisfaction is very important to us and we are disappointed to have failed you on this. We wish we were made aware of your issues as we would have gladly helped plan some activities or helped you find alternative accommodation more suited to your expectations.

Kind Regards,
Carrie Walcott

We spent a week at Beachview and I was extremely satisfied.
The apartments are new, have great space and are very comfortable; they are much better than what they appear in the website.
Location is great in the West Coast. A lot has been said about the noise from the street; I did not notice any of this.
A nice beach is less than 2 minutes of walk from the place.

Great value.

I went with friends to Barbados for Memorial Day weekend and our stay was quite short. In the minimal amount of time we were there, we absolutely loved this hotel. It's located across the street from the beach and is a short ride on the bus to Holetown or even Bridgetown. We were warmly greeted when we arrived and they even supplied us with bagels and water in the room. The suite is spacious, very clean, and overall perfect. The pictures on the website don't do it justice. The staff are all very friendly and knowledgeable and the service is superb. I will definitely stay here again in the future.

This place was really good. Very neat maintenance. Security guards are really helpful and they showed us the way to go everywhere and how to go. Rooms were very neat with a/c facility. There is a pool and a beach just opposite the hotel. Its the best place to stay for the money you are paying. Management was very helpful especially Carrie. I requested her so many things before we left and she gave me everything possible.

this is perfect for folks who want to stay close to holestown, paynes bay, you can get back and forth with 1.5 babados dollars by bus. we stayed here 4 nights and saw all of oistins, crane beach, bath sheba etc... the apartments are well equipped and the room service is great. good size pool to enjoy the sunset in. loved the place and definitely recommend to all. the staff, security guardds are great. they make the safety and staty of guests the priority. mayers and rogers are the best guards on duty who took care of us and advised on getting around.

So many good things to say about Beach View. Just returned from a brilliant 2 weeks in Barbados and Beach View was the perfect base.

We booked with Virgin holidays from the UK and upon arrival they upgraded us to a 3 bedroom apartment. It was really spacious and fully equipped.

Free wifi worked all the time, daily housekeeping with great attention to detail and without being intrusive. Staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, snack bar perfect for breakfast or lunch.

I really cannot fault this place and will be rebooking for next year.

The only changes we will make next time is use the grocery pre order form on the website for a chilled beer on arrival (we only noticed it day before we left and it covers a good range of food and drink).

We stayed at the Beach view for 5 nights during our 2nd trip to Barbados. It was our first time staying on the west coast; usually we stay on the south east coast. We chose to stay here for the price, kitchen, and positive reviews on Trip Advisor.

1) Our unit: We stayed in a 1 bedroom unit equipped with a full kitchen. It was very spacious, clean, and comfortable. We were on the first floor, just a quick walk to the pool and had a nice view of the garden. The ocean view rooms must have a beautiful view though.
2) Property: The property is well maintained and has limited amenities, pool, small cafe for breakfast and lunch. They do not have a gym here though and it there aren't many options for running/walking. It is not like Carlisle Beach so I did not feel comfortable walking/running the beach on my own. It is also across the street from the beach; if you are planning on sitting on the beach, this may disapoint you, but if you walk 10 minutes, you can find a decent beach. NB. The beach is a little rocky in some spots, but you can find spots that are completely sandy. The pool is nice and you can swim laps if it is not crowded. I was quite content doing yoga on my porch too.
3) Location: The location is a little secluded if you do not have a car, but you can take a taxi or the bus (1.75$BD) to H'Town or S'Town or even to B'Town. We took the reggae bus (yellow bus because they give change and they're quite fun all the time); you get to H'town in 10 minutes, S'town and B'Town in 20 minutes. The supermarket is in H'Town but has limited stuff compared to the one in Warrens and there is a fish market across the street; bought 2 pounds of tuna for $13.00BD.

Overall review: Some people complained about the noise from the road, and yes it can be a little loud at times but it did not keep me from sleeping or relaxing. Housekeeping is also pretty good and regular. We had breakfast included in our package and enjoyed it. Best options: the granola and the egg and bacon buttie, although the banana bread is really good too. We like to walk and well that was a challenge at times due to the lack of sidewalk. You can walk on the beach all the way to H'town during low tide. The service was pretty good; Carrie was very helpful and welcoming. We had free wireless internet and it worked about 75% of the time. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet and off-the-beaten path kind of experience.
