“Great, but wish we could have slept”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

We stayed for a week in early April. The location was lovely and the staff were super, really nice.

The hotel is supposed to be full of elderly people but that's certainly not what we found. Most were 30 to 50 with some kids in tow.

The hotel had a very English country house feeling which we liked.

So why the reservations? A bit is to do with the bathrooms where they should spend some money if they want to be a 5 star hotel. Taxi prices from the hotel irritate although I gather they are centrally negotiated so you cant really blame the hotel but it is a long way north of most hotels so it does impinge more.

The biggest problem we had was not being able to sleep because of a distressed cat right below our room. On the first day of listening to the constant yowling from 5 am onwards we asked reception if the hotel owned any cats and were told no, they would be strays. At breakfast however we learned from a waiter that the hotel had removed 4 kittens from below our room the previous day. We did not want to cause any further fuss feeling very sorry for a cat that was obviously grieving. However the cat continued to pine for the rest of our stay.

We arrived with a little trepidation. We had been recommended this hotel by a travel agent and clearly had not done the relevant research ourselves until too late. Browsing the hotel website a day or two before we set off revealed that there were no TVs, radios or alarm clocks in the room. We had the children with us - surely this would be a nightmare?

On arrival, and wandering through the lovely, compact garden to our room, we forgot about this inconvenience. Ultimately it proved misplaced anyway as a decent wi-fi connection enabled us to keep up to date with all news, i-player programmes etc and we had a laptop and had brought dvds too so could watch the occasional movie. So, not a problem.

The rooms were great, perhaps a little dated in terms of decor but very comfortable. The main restaurant and bar is housed in a lovely house on the water's edge. The pool is tiny and is the main drawback if staying with children. That said, they were quite happy to be snorkelling in the sea most of the time.

The biggest (pleasant) surprise was the quality of the food. It was excellent and even if you don't stay there is worth a detour. It was also a wonderful treat to be served tea each day, with delicious scones and sandwiches. All very civilised.

The less civilised and dark underbelly of the hotel/stay was the extraordinarily unseemly rush for the sun-loungers. This has been mentioned in other reviews. Clearly this is something that no hotel has solved yet but this was as bad as I have ever seen it. The hotel wasn't full for the first few days that we were there so wasn't an issue. As it filled prior to Easter, it became a gruesome game. I was up very early on two days (before 7am) to play golf. On one day ALL the loungers had been reserved by then! What were these people doing?? Was their jet lag so awful that they had to pass away the hours before dawn deciding whether to use the sun cream or the flip flops to bag their spot? Inevitably these would not be occupied until 11am or later. On the other day I managed to nab the last four. You feel dirty doing it. This really is a pet hate of mine yet you have to play the game if you want to be anywhere near the pool. I would like to hear management's response to this.

Nervertheless, it proved overall to be a great place to go for complete 'r & r'. Service was friendly yet professional. Highly recommended

Room Tip: We liked the lower floors with direct access to the gardens. One or two are a bit close to the pool...

Each time we've stayed here it gets better. (Confession: we had a beach wedding here in 2010). The best rooms, with a view of the tropical gardens or sea, are the upstairs ones in Caribbean style blocks of four suites. Each has a large living area with lanai, an air conditioned bedroom, full bathroom and a small kitchen nook for morning beverages, cocktails and snacks. The restaurant has such outstanding food, breakfast, lunch and dinner that sometimes we've not even left the property. Chef Brian cooks up an international menu of substantial quality. Many of the staff have been here for years and welcome us back, under the inspired leadership of Manager Randall Wilkie. To top it all they send a car to the airport and there's a cocktail waiting at check-in. Perfect.

We advise all visitors to this wonderful hotel to take up the offer of two rum punches as soon as you step out of the car from the airport, arranged by the hotel in advance (the car that is!), a truly great start to our holiday. This epitomised the service that we received throughout our fabulous week at Cobblers Cove. Our room (28) was upstairs and overlooked the beautiful tropical gardens, which was also a haven for the colourful local bird population. Infact the room was actually a suite, comprising an air conditioned bedroom, a well appointed bathroom and a large sitting room with a balcony and kitchen area, we could have had a party for at least a dozen guests! The service in the restaurant and around the bar/pool area was excellent with frequent offers of iced cold water, cool face cloths, fresh fruit and sorbet.

We looked forward to our Breakfast every morning, delicious dinners and we appreciated the excellent Sunday Lobster lunch. If you feel like a stroll along the beach in both directions, you will find some fun local bars and restaurants.

There is a reef just off the main hotel beach, which provides excellent snorkelling when the seas are calm. Also on offer are complimentary boat trips and waterskiing, if you are aquatically inclined.

We would advise first time visitors to the island to hire a car for at least a day to explore the north of the island and the east coast in particular.

When you leave Cobblers Cover you will be left with the abiding impression of hospitality from unfailingly friendly and professional staff, who will wet your appetite for a return visit.

This is a great property ideal for a family with young children or in our case grandchild! The food on the property is excellent so we rarely had to go out. The service was perfect and all the staff and management were very friendly and efficient. I have been to Barbados many times but Cobblers is the place for me!

Room Tip: Sea view ! I like the ground floor!

I returned from Cobblers Cove in February after a lovely stay that was most memorable for it's wonderful food, delightful staff and beautiful beaches and views. I have been to many island resorts and I have to say the food at Cobblers Cove was by far the best I've had in the region. Elegant cuisine with an ever changing menu that reflected regional specialties, as well as European and Asian influences. The staff was absolutely lovely and helpful and friendly, my friend and I felt very welcomed. The atmosphere of the hotel is charming and quaint. The beach is gorgeous. Another highlight of our stay was swimming with sea turtles! It was recommended we try it and we were so happy we did. It's a short boat ride from the hotel and a wonderful experience. In addition to the great hotel experience I was totally blown away by the island of Barbados as it was my first trip. There is so much history and culture and great food and the island is build up just enough...there is a feeling of modernization without commercialization. I can't recommend the experience enough and I for sure plan on returning.

I returned last week from the perfect holiday at Cobblers Cove on Barbados and am still relishing every moment – in my room overlooking a magical garden (with monkeys swinging from the trees). The comfort and service were impeccable. The Bar area always held lots of ice and iced water, the sitting room had good books and the loungers on the balcony blissful. But there was not much time to read. The beach and hotel pool were irresistible after an amazing breakfast, delicious dinners were served by the smiling staff. It was like staying in a very well-run country house, which I long to return to again. Can I give it six stars>
