“St. Nicholas Abbey”
My husband and I journeyed to St. Nicholas Abbey to spend part of the afternoon exploring what an authentic sugar cane plantation was like. The grounds and plantation house are beautiful, and the first floor interior is just what you would expect of a sprawling plantation home in the tropics. The large English style drawing room with paneling up the wall about 6 feet and then painted a gorgeous tropical green really sets off the solid wood antiques. It would be nice to be able to explore the upstairs in order to see how the bedrooms were laid out. Surrounding the plantation is a well-apportioned cafe and rum room where visitors can get their bottles engraved. We chose to walk through the gully (so interesting to see the ancient mahagony and palm trees) and other outbuildings such as the bath, the toilets, and the distillery. The owners have gone to great expense and care to bring this facility to the standard where it can be a learning experience for visitors. We were both glad we made the trip!
