I just returned to the UK today after a wonderful 4 day break to Bermuda.
First time to the island and I loved it! After taking the breathtaking journey from the airport, I think I could have been staying in a beach hut and I would have enjoyed it, but after arriving at the top of the sweeping drive to the Fairmont Southampton and being greeted by the wonderful Clifton, I knew we would have a great time.
The hotel was much nicer than I was expecting after reading some of the reviews on here. I would just like to reassure other travellers that this is a great hotel, the service is fantastic and the setting just splendid.
We stayed on the 6th floor, the Fairmont Gold floor and were spoilt by the fantastic Lionel & Orlando. The view from our room was amazing and the facilities / amenities were perfect - we could not have asked for any more.
My only gripe was in the Gold Lounge, when the time came to clear away afternoon tea and the Hors D'ouevres (4.30 and 7 respectively) - they literally did swipe everything in, I found this to be a little harsh and not typical of the otherwise good service. One evening I was taking some cheese to have with my wine and the basket of bread/crackers was taken away as I was taking some cheese!
The beach was gorgeous, the pool was pleasant, the boat trip to the Hamilton Princess was well worth it as the pool there was lovely also. The shuttles were never full and easy to pick up and the restaurants were fantastic and good value for money, my favourite was the Waterlot Inn - Lovely steaks!
There was a nightclub on site called the Cellar which was fun, and served its purpose being open till 3am. Myself, Husband and another couple (friends of ours) had such a good time, we will definately return.
As a stiff upper lipped Brit, the only downside for me was the huge number of our friends from across the pond who were there, particularly part of conference groups. I found many people to be rude to the staff and not at all courteous which did upset me a little - this is nothing against the yanks, I was obviously just unlucky to see this!! Understandably, if we were only a 2 hour flight away, I'm sure there would be plenty of us invading the Island too! (ever visited Spain??!) I just can't stand arrogant people, and it became apparent that the island was a bit of a 'Rich Americans Playground' which was unfortunate from the manners aspect! Like I say, this was probably unfortunate on my part and did not spoil our overall enjoyment of the holiday.
Please give this hotel a try, it is a great property and you won't be dissapointed!
