“Fairmont Southhampton is Bermuda's Best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2009

I traveled to Bermuda with my boyfriend for a 4-day stay at the Fairmont Southhampton. We luckily missed Hurrican Bill by a week and had beautiful weather. I could see, however, that if you had bad weather on your trip there would be little to do at the Fairmont. That would be the only negative about Bermuda....

We had booked a moderate room with harbour/golf view and were upgraded upon arrival because no moderate rooms were available due to a convention that was
wrapping up. So we were very pleased when we received a deluxe room with ocean view at the same cost of $139! We originally booked at the rate of $300 a night but 4 days prior to our trip the rates dropped to $139 so we cancelled & re-booked with the new rate! So make sure you keep an eye on the rates because you might be able to do the same!

The beach at the hotel was fantastic. Plenty of lounge chairs...if you want an umbrella you must be there by 10 a.m. or so. They go quick! Horseshoe beach is within walking distance and is beautiful as well, but no need to pay the chair rental fee when the hotel beach is just as nice. Food at the Cabana bar was pretty good, but drinks were very overpriced! I have no problem paying a lot of money for a great meal but $14 for a pina colada is pushing it!

We ate at several of the restaurants. Bacci was by far our favorite. Nice, cozy atmosphere and yummy Italian food. The Ocean Club was very good as well. Definitely more modern inside but the staff was fabulous at both restaurants. We ate breakfast every morning at Windows on the Sound. We skipped the buffet option at ordered sraight from the menu which I think is the best way to go. The belgium waffles & omelets were particularly tasty!

Overall, we were extremely pleased and will return for sure!

Family stayed 4 nights at Southampton and find ourselves embroiled in a billing issue. If you stay with them under one of those, "stay 4 nights, get $400 resport credit" be aware. Our resort credits appeared on the bills at check out but have apparently been reversed and charged to my credit card. As of this review the issue remains unresolved. Hotel has not returned phone calls and did not respond to faxed letter explaining issue.

Beautiful room (received complimentary upgrade) and view. Very clean. Food in hotel restaurants expensive, but excellent. Wine runs about $17 a glass or (minimum) $55 a bottle, entrees about $40, easy $150-$200 a couple with appetizer and gratuity, but very good food and service. Staff consistently helpful and eager to please. Beach and water beautiful. Trolley shuttle to beach quick and easy. The free 25 minute ferry ride to Hamilton Princess was lovely (sit in the front for best view, less engine noise, and nice breeze). Less visible grounds not as immaculate as the more visible areas. Some seaweed on beach that was eventually raked, but not picked up and left below high tide water mark so a few hours after clean up, it was right back in the water. Adjacent -and well known- Horseshoe Beach also nice, but to be avoided when the cruise ships are in port. Overall, beautiful hotel with excellent food and service. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Loved it.

A little out of the way, but it has a private beach, spacious and tastefully decorated rooms, a shuttle to the city of Hamilton, a great restaurant, shops, a golf course, nightclub and spa. Fantastic service, everyone is very helpful. Definitely recommend staying there if you're travelling for leisure.

This is now our 3rd time to Bermuda and second time to the Fairmont Princess. This is simply the best large hotel in all of Bermuda; in fact, it happens to be the largest hotel in Bermuda while sitting on top of a hill. Beautiful views all around. High quality materials and very clean. Small but well maintained indoor and outdoor pools. The standard suite was very clean and decent sized with a balcony. Very clean bathroom. Individual sink outside the bath was a plus. Maid service is good to very good. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The price is steep but well worth it. Excellent golf course included in golf suites.

Value- 9 out of 10 as you certainly get what you pay for.
Location- 9, great views, centralized
Pools- 10, clean
Beach- 10, soft pink sand
Room- 8, decent design, clean
Service- 8, well trained, friendly
Overall- 9. Will be back for every visit.

I hadn't been to Bermuda in over 25 years due to a bad past experience with continuously rainy weather. I was spurred to go back after such a long time due to steep discounts by Fairmont at this premier facility. My family and I had two beautiful rooms for only $199/each vs. the $500+ regular price. Tough to say whether I'd be as pleased if I had paid over $1,000/night for the two rooms, but I can say I was thrilled with this bargain.

The rooms were nicely decorated and spacious with a large walk-in closet and balcony overlooking the pool. Friends had a similar room overlooking the beach they booked for the same price. The only small gripe we had with the room was a tiny outdated TV. Perhaps this would have been a bigger issue if we were forced to watch tv due to poor weather, but we were very lucky with beautiful warm weather for our entire 5-day stay. It was also a little disappointing that the Fairmont chooses to charge $15/day for use of the gym and $20 for a morning pilates class.

The hotel is located on a beautiful part of the island. The beach is a short trolley ride down the hill and is magnificent. Across a few rocks is the public Horsehoe Bay Beach, which is widely regarded as one of the nicest beaches in North America and the hotel's beach was every bit as beautiful. Chairs were reasonably plentiful as were umbrellas. Some tiki huts were also available. We only spent a brief amount of time at the pool, but it was nice as well.

The outside of the hotel is bright pink--not very unusual for Bermuda, and it's surrounded by an 18-hole par 54 golf course. The course seemed to be in good condition, but we opted to play instead at the par 71 Port Royal course about a 10-minute cab ride away. I can't compare Port Royal to others on the island, but we were a bit disappointed in it given it's a stop next month on the PGA Tour--only a few holes are really scenic and the cartpath only rule proved exhausting on a very hot and sunny day. (Why cartpath only?)

Back at the hotel, the inside lobby is formal with a lot of wood all around. We arrived a bit before the posted check-in time and did have to wait for our rooms to be ready. There are a number of comfortable chairs throughout the lobby area.

We ate at several of the hotel restaurants. Jasmine's is the lobby bar and restaurant--we sampled a very good martini and had an enjoyable lunch. In particular the flatbread pizzas were very good. We had two breakfasts at Windows, which looks out onto the ocean (great buffet and very good waffles on the menu). We also had dinner at Bacci's italian restaurant situated near the golf course--another good choice. Less formal and expensive was Wicket's with indoor and outdoor seating by the pool, where the food was fine for what it was. Our only sub-par meal at the hotel was at the beach.

Outside the hotel, we had consistently good food with excellent atmosphere, notably at Mickey's (right on Elbow Beach) and Blu (great view at the Belmont Country Club). Prices are quite expensive at the nicer restaurants on the island--I'd say comparable to New York City or San Francisco, based on my experience. Service was ok, but not outstanding.

Considering the short plane ride from NYC (1:45), we won't wait 25 years to return to Bermuda again.

We booked this hotel for the summer, knowing there was a good possibility we could get caught in a hurricane (which we did) precisely bc the website advertised its indoor pool. Well, once we arrived, we found out the indoor pool is for spa guests over the age of 18 ONLY. Children cannot use the pool at all until after 6:30.

Other than this annoyance, I generally liked the hotel, we reserved it under Fairmont's $99 for 99 hours special. Still, they tacked on $76 per day in room and resort charges for a family of 4. I cannot believe people pay $400-500/night here, it really it not worth that.
