My wife and I stayed at the Fairmont Southampton from November 25th-27th. After our quick uneventful flight to Bermuda from Toronto we were quickly wisked away to our hotel. I should start be mentioning that I was using Fairmont President's Club Platinum free nights for this trip as well as a suite upgrade certificate to a one bedroom suite.
When we arrived at the hotel we were escorted inside and went into the check-in line. No one was at the President's Club desk so it seemed like a moot point to line up there. Waited about 20 minutes to check in. Check in quite and efficient, 30 seconds I have by keys and we are on our way to our room.
Room was very nicely appointed in typical Fairmont fashion. Furniture was a little outdated but in a Carribbean kind of way. Two very large rooms with an oversized balcony and a huge bathroom with very large soaker tub that my wife fell in love with.
We had lunch at the lobby bar and the service was rather slow but they appeared to be quite busy, we didn't mind as we were not in any hurry. Food was good but very pricey, especially the beer. Nothing like paying $8USD for a budweiser. Tip of 15% automatically included as per island rules.
I spend the afternoon watching NFL games (Thanksgiving) while my wife had a massage at the Willow Stream spa. It as complimentary and part of my platinum package. She said it was quite nice but she would not have paid $180USD for it.
Dinner we went into Hamilton to Ascott's. This is in a small inn/hotel with a a large covered balcony which was heated. It was very nice with all the trees lit up outside. The food and service here were extremely good. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. We felt the quality was close to the price. We took a taxi back to the hotel after dinner.
Had a couple of drinks at the lobby bar. There was a large group of Scotia McCleod brokers at the resort so there was plenty of entertainment in the bar.
The next day we spend at the spa in the morning since it was raining and it was included in my platinum membership. Ordinarily there would be a charge of $25/per person per day to use the facilities. Had a very relaxing morning around the pool and hottub.
Afternoon we spend shopping in Hamilton before going to the Hog and Penny for happy hour. Once again, not really like the happy hour we were used to. Anyway, it was a neat little pub where the beer and food were overpriced not unlike the rest of the island. The service here was very good and I would definitely go back. It had that neat dark, dungy old english pub atmosphere that I like.
Saturday morning we spent at the beach club since it was a glorious day. The beach club was nice with it's change rooms and towels as well as umbrellas for shade. It was quite busy for the end of November, must have been all the Canadians at the resort. Swimming in the ocean took some getting use to but it was similar to the lake up north in early June. Most Canadians would know what I am talking about (70F)
Spent the afternoon lounging around before going to the Waterlott Inn for dinner. This was the worst part of our trip. Talk about overpriced and poor quality. This place pretends to be a steak house to rival Hy's or Ruth Chris and has a long way to go to get there. The did start by charging the same prices though. The best part of the meal was the escargots and it went down from there. I would not return to this place again.
After a dissapointing dinner we headed to the Cellar which is on the property for a few drinks. Service here was terrible and I actually spoke to the manager and had her take off the 15% tip since I have to serve myself at the bar. She claimed they were short staff, certainly didn't stop her from standing around and talking to the bartender instead of working. Anyway, very dissapointing service from Fairmont.
Checked out next day and caught our flight home to Toronto. It will certainly be a long time before I return to Bermuda but it was a good experience nonetheless. I think that part that irks me is that they include a 15% gratuity for everything and then don't deliver on the service. It is like the whole island is part of a union. Regardless of the level of service they provide they are going to get paid for it and paid well.
I would also recommend going when it is a little warmer as there will be more to do during the high season.
