“Tradition Lives On Gloriously!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

We had last been to this property (once called the Southhampton Princess) 3 decades ago. So it was with some trepidation that we returned for an anniversary vacation, not sure whether we would simply be mourning its past glory. Far from it -- we had a wonderful time, warmed by the unchanged hospitality of its Bermudian staff. And most of the traditions lived on, enhanced by a total upgrade of the hotel performed a few years ago. By sheer luck we discovered the President's Club Floor, with an upgrade we requested when it was on sale. THAT was a fabulous experience for sheer relaxation and casual socialization. Breakfast, tea, and hors d'oeuvres are all included and provided in an on-floor lounge with marvelous balcony tables. Exchange privileges with their sister hotel in Hamilton offered the same free private afternoon tea, etc., with this upgrade package.
Everyone from the shuttle drivers (to dock or beach) to the concierge were unfailingly helpful and friendly -- and the traditional Bermuda attire retained the full British formality.
Dinner at their seafront restaurant was a meal to remember for a lifetime, for the sunset view, the perfectly prepared fish, and the easy conversation with other terrace diners.
The only only disappointment was that the once-elegant Newport Room restaurant of our memories is now a pub-style -- reflecting the economic and style changes of the times.
We took the free ferry to Hamilton, and enjoyed the boatride, but the town was a huge disappointment. Gone was the elegance of Triminghams and other high-end stores, replaced by dismal shops and touristy souvenir places. Don't bother to even walk around, except to have lunch at a Yelp-recommended restaurant.
Bottom line -- after not going for decades we now want to make a JetBlue flight to Bermuda an annual decompression trip each year, to soak in the genuine hospitality and perfect elegance of this property.
And I haven't even mentioned the gorgeous executive-length golf course on the property. Short, but challenging, and with the full Atlantic before you.

Room Tip: Splurge for the President's Club floor.

We are overwhelmed by your lovely review, thank you so much for sharing. We are so pleased we could host your anniversary and make your return trip as special as it was 3 decades ago. Our teams on Fairmont Gold do an excellent job, and it sounds like you took full advantage of all the wonderful offerings on their private concierge floor. I'm glad you enjoyed the Ocean Club and got a chance to eat with the panoramic backdrop of a glorious Bermuda sunset. In 2012, we changed the Newport Room that you describe into the Newport, a Gastropub. While the focus is still on creative, gourmet cuisine, it is at a price point that is sensible and in a more relaxed and vibrant atmosphere. We hope that we will become an annual retreat for you, and we hope to welcome you back soon! Thank you again for this glowing review!

We vacationed in Bermuda for a few days after Christmas. We stayed at the Fairmont Southampton and were very pleased with the hotel and their staff. They made us feel very welcome. If possible, upgrade to the 6th Floor Gold level (a few extra bucks a night but well worth it) as you get complimentary breakfast, appetizers, and desserts. Horseshoe Bay, a beautiful beach, is very close by. A beautiful 9 hole golf course.

Room Tip: 6th Floor Gold Level is worth the extra money. Get the bay side view versus the ocean side. Less n...

Family holiday over Xmas and New Year at Fairmont Southampton. Weather understandably a bit cold to be ideal, but the staff at the Fairmont warmed up the experience and have made this one of best holiday experiences we've had. Yes Bermuda is beautiful, the sea a stunning turquoise, the island small enough to to have a great community feel, but the thing that's special are the people.... genuine, warm, friendly, funny. The staff at the Fairmont Southampton (in contrast to the sister hotel the Fairmont Princess in Hamilton where we had a stuffy cold unhelpful service at reception/concierge) seemingly effortlessly, put their own personalities into the experience to deliver service excellence, not the fake, rote American style 'have a nice day' type of robotic effort but a genuinely warm, and helpful service, delivered uniquely by each personality. Big clap for Russell at reception, Maria waitress in the Newport, Dennis the manager, and Jane the concierge. The highlight however was Thomas the Canadian/ New York Maitre D' of the Waterlot and Manager, whose great character kept us amused at every encounter. You can't train this kind of approach but he has it in spades. Very funny, fabulous with the kids and made an ordinary and quite overpriced meal at The Waterlot worth it. My 6 year old son had a mission to report the holiday back to his class via the school Owl mascot and Thomas took him and his brother for an Owl chef adventure-money -cant- buy in the kitchens where they took some memorable unique shots for school, before taking us on a personal historic tour of the old building and wine cellars. Made the service experience on other holidays, look surly, stuffy and formulaic, Thanks Thomas and all the crew at the Fairmont. Highly recommended. ( only lost the 5th star due to high cost of meals)

Room Tip: We stayed overlooking harbour on 5th floor and were very happy with view.

We stayed on the gold floor. Well worth the extra cost. Good breakfast, lots of variety during tea hour, appetizers in evening and desserts later in evening. We took the public buses together around. Can catch them from front nterance, easy to use. Can buy tokens from front desk. Staff very helpful. Clean and very comfortable accom.

Traveled with a friend of mine...for a girly weekend away. Was pleasantly surprised to stay at this delightful hotel. Got a great deal on the room online and we checked in via the President's Club. Davina and Alexander were very professional and took great care in ensuring we had a room that we were happy with. Our room was on the fifth floor ocean view, walk in closet, 2 comfy queen beds and overall had all the amenities you would expect. We loved the Keurig coffeemaker and the tea kettle in our room. This was a great time of year to visit the hotel. They had lots of complimentary activities such as tea/cookie hour for the xmas season. They hotel was tastefully decorated for the holiday season.
We used the BMW bikes for a nice cycling adventure along the railway trail. Be prepared for steep hills....on the journey back the trolley driver kindly gave us and the bikes a ride back up the hill. We took the ferry into hamiltion and also to the beach. The hotel is located right next to Horseshoe beach...you must go there if only for a lovely stroll along the beach.
The breakfast buffet and the Sunday brunch were very filling! I would advise getting a breakfast package. For dinner, Thomas served us at the gastropub and made a great recommendation for a fish dish...it is great service when the staff is confident in what they can offer. We ate and played checkers at our table in the Jasmine lounge one evening.

The staff all delivered excellent service with a smile. All in all was a delightful stay...would recommend it as a great place for rest and relaxation.

Room Tip: I imagine all the rooms are nice. But I think the higher the better the view will be.

Wanting to spend Christmas away from home, a golf vacation seemed like a good idea. Gotobermuda.com offers great deals. The hotel itself is your average mid range hotel; the staff is very friendly, especially Nick, the bellman. He is Mr. Bermuda. The concierge, front desk and wait staff are great however, that cannot be said for the housekeeping staff. Most needed to almost walk into you to say hello and, our housekeeper had a real attitude. Our room lacked some basic amenities that were listed on the 'included' list. I was able to get those items but I needed to ask. As is typical of Bermuda, food is very expensive and the hotel was no exception. The indoor pool was not available until after 6:30pm unless you wanted to pay a daily spa fee. Would certainly go back but would probably choose another accommodation.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean view.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us on TripAdvisor. While I am glad to hear that you found most of the service and staff to be amiable, I am disappointed that you found the service lacking in the housekeeping department. I heartily apologise for this, and have sent your concerns onto management to ensure that they are addressed for future guests. We take pride in having friendly, fantastic staff- and I have to agree with you, Nick is the true super-star. Thanks again for leaving us a review, and we hope to welcome you back for another golf vacation soon.

Perfect escape to Bermuda at the Fairmont Southampton. First trip to Bermuda and quite a haul from Southern California- but was well worth it. This location gave us the perfect amount of family down time that we needed. This location gave us easy access to bus lines, beach club via hotel trolley, and the ferry. The hotel (quite expansive) was well decorated for the holidays and very festive. The trees along the entire driveway were wrapped in lights and we counted at least 5 Christmas trees inside. We still had a chance to watch some American Football on Thanksgiving (recommend enjoying with a Dark & Stormy from Jasmine's). Christmas spirit aside, we were at the beach and heated pool every day. We traveled at the start of the off-season, so we literally had the hotel and amenities to ourselves and scored a heck of a deal on the room rate (50% reduced rate direct through Fairmont). Stayed first few nights in a king ocean view room and spent the last leg of the trip in a suite on the harbor side. Ocean view was fantastic; request a high floor at the end farthest from the lobby as to not be overlooking the entry way or the roof. Harbor side had views to Hamilton with a nice twinkling city/town views at night. We never had problem with noise, contrary to what other guests had posted, but again, this was during Thanksgiving so not very many travelers. Although I liked the spaciousness of the suite, next time would choose ocean view. Harbor side seemed to have a continuous chill since it was never in direct sunlight. The beach club was a good option with showers, towels, and bar service. We ventured next door to Horseshoe bay, but started and ended our beach days at the hotel beach club. The trolley to and from the bus stops, ferry, and beach club was very convenient. We never waited more than a couple of minutes. Service at this hotel was great. Every employee was amazingly helpful, courteous, and had true Bermudian charm. Nick at the front entrance and Jaswin inside Jasmine’s are to be commended for their hospitality. No complaints about the Fairmont Southampton – would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Higher floor for sure. Request farthest away from the lobby to ensure your view isn't of the roo...

Thank you for sharing about your Thanksgiving vacation in Bermuda! We're so happy to hear that you enjoyed yourselves, and that our holiday cheer was contagious- we sure do like our decorations! Both the suites and deluxe rooms offer great views, whichever you choose, and it's great that you liked both room options. We consistently get comments on our star colleague, Nick, from the front door and it's wonderful to be able to share with him that his efforts are memorable. Thank you for sharing, we'll be sure to pass along the note to Nick & Jaswyn. We hope that you are able to visit with us again soon, and can enjoy more of our Bermuda hospitality.
