My husband and I spent 5 nights at Mazarine last week. We are in our mid sixties. I chose this guest house five years ago as it was near to my Aunt and Uncles home and my brothers, sisters and I brought my Mom to visit her sister (both in their 80"s). The location was perfect but we all fell in love with Mazarine.
On this trip we also took advantage of the taxi arranged by Rhonda to and from the airport. Thanks to a previous reviewer we stopped at the Marketplace on the way from the airport-great move we made all our breakfasts and lunch if we were "home". We still had to shop carefully (the heat and humidity spoils food quickly). A tip from a cousin-most food is imported and usually arrives by container ship from the states Thurs and Sunday. Albert also drove us to the bus terminal to pick up transportatin passes, again a good move-the day after we arrived we toured the island by bus and ferry. Bus stops are close by but accept exact change only and do not sell the passes.. We got a little spoiled as family did drive us around a bit. I had the bus and ferry schedulle and it is very useable with some planning. A taxi after dinner from downtown Hamilton was only $8. We loved the quiet location.
The view is incredible-sunrise, sunset, and durng the day watching the cruise ships (and their various toys), ferries, fishing boats and so on. Being the last weekend of the summer the north shore was very busy, we even saw the container ship sailing to Hamilton on Sunday, We swam in the pool several times a day and usually went for a dip before breakfast as it was so handy. We ate on our balcony, in the BBQ area and a couple of times at our little dinning table (if it the sun was strong), all had wonderful views.
I couldn't wait to snorkle with my husband on the wonderfull reef just down the steps from our room. The ocean was too rough for the first two days, then every day it was better and better as the water settled. On our last full day, Monday we went in twice, the water was calm and almost like a mirror. Low tide that afternoon was the best. We saw many different fish, a small octopus and a large sea slug! The coral is good and colourfull and has not been trampled. Getting in and out on the large flat rocks is not too hard but varies depending on the seas and we found a uninflated air matteress helpfull as a pad as the rock surface is sharp. On my trip five years ago the sea was like glass almost everyday, also we had low tide in the morning, which might have been helpful. The ocean was choppy again our last morning as another tropical strom was brewing but generally the north shore is calm as it is so welll protected.
