“Lovely place.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

Had a wonderful 2 weeks at Coco Reef in Sept. Everyone, without exception, were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was exceptional, with excellent food, well cooked and presented beautifully. Our room was clean and tidy, kept spotless by our chambermaids.
It's a small hotel 64 rooms, which makes it quiet and peaceful, the beach in lovely. The main road is 10 min walk away, where there is a useful supermarket and bus route into Hamilton or the dockyards.
The only minor fault, our middle weekend there was a wedding, also the weekend we departed, there was another function and as a hotel guest, I did feel a little 'pushed aside' when these were happening, kept away from areas for dining that were other times available to us. But other than that, I would recommend it to anyone who seeks a small, friendly hotel, with a superb beach.

Room Tip: For a better view, with Ocean View rooms, ask for 2nd floor.

We stayed at the Coco Reef Resort for the first ten days of October. We would stay there again. If you are looking for a resort like the advertisements on tv for Sandals, or if you want to drink and party a lot and be a gregarious beautiful person, this is not the resort for you. It is a good three star. The cliental for the most part were middle age and older, with a couple of honeymoon couples thrown in. The room was adequate size and clean, the staff, except for one brain dead female (white) clerk on the desk (days), were friendly and competent. The dining room was upscale with the prices to match, and the limited menu got tiring by the end of the week. The grounds were very attractive with lots of flowering shrubs. There were adequate number of beach and pool lounges so there wasn't a problem of people saving them. The weather was quite warm and somewhat humid.

Other things, it is a five minute walk through the adjoining college grounds to a main road. From that point there is a very good family type restaurant with reasonable prices four minutes to the left, and a medium sized well stocked super market to the right. There are no other restaurants nor stores within easy walking distance. The bus stops are where you come out to the main road. There is a major hotel about a five minute walk along the beach (watch out at high tide or high winds). We visited it three times but only ate there once. It is busier, noisier, and has a disco.

The Coco Reef beach has been washed away by the recent winds, not a problem since the loungers are elevated, but no good for wading if you have children. One major guide book states that the resort is in need of renovation, which sounds like broken tile, ragged drapes, water stains, worn carpets, musty smell, etc. Not so. Although the décor is out of the 70s/80s, everything was spotlessly clean and in good working order. The guide book also said the Coco Reef was overpriced for what you got. That is true, but so is just about everything else in Bermuda.

Room Tip: We had a beech front room. It was nice and close to the beach, but we had to draw the curtains when...

I based the rating in part on value as there are many nicer places in Bermuda. However, this was our second stay at Coco Reef and again we were very pleased. We have stayed at more expensive and more luxurious places such as the Princess, Pink Beach Club and The Reefs but Coco Reef delivers all we need at nearly half the cost. The location is as good as it gets in Bermuda. The hotel sits right on the south shore beach that is adjacent ( basically the same beach) with the Elbow beach hotel. We stepped out of the slider and twenty steps later we were in the sand. The rooms are a bit dated but clean and well maintained. Comparable to a good Holiday Inn in the US. The restaurant was great and we found the prices reasonable for what they provided. We noticed many comments on cost of food being high on this site. The issue is the hotel has just one restaurant and it is a high end place serving steaks and rack of lamb etc. Too small a property for multiple venues. Cost of a meal was $35 to $50 and well worth it, very good. We purchased a bottle of wine one night then saw the exact bottle at Fourways Inn the next night for 75% higher cost. If you want a more casual setting there are several lower places that cost less near by.

Room Tip: The property has a steep hill. If you take an ocean front room you need to walk up the hill for the...

Coco Reef is not a luxurious resort however it is clean, safe and on a beautifully (somewhat) secluded beach. If you don't like crowds, this is the pace for you. The resort is within walking distance to Mickey's Beach Bistro which is right on the beach. We also used public transportation (bus) to go to Hamilton for dinner (Pickled Onion - fantastic!). The bus system is very easy to use, clean and air conditioned.

As far as the resort goes, bring you own hair shampoo and conditioner. They had complimentary shampoo with "conditioner" built in but it was terrible - you need conditioner!

The resort could be updated but it is in a great beach location, very clean, has great food and reasonably priced. Note that the resort charges for the maid service ($20 / person / day) so there is no need to leave a tip.

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean views.

As part of my 7day Explorer of the Seas Cruise to Bermuda, I purchased a day pass at the Coco Reef Resort. This resort is beautiful. While we did not stay there, we were shown one of the rooms and it looked perfect. We had lunch as part of our day pass. I'm still missing the Salad.
The beach area is not extremely large, but we were still able to swim in the ocean. There was a group of fish feeding close to the coral.

My intention is to come back here and stay for a few days.

This place is situated at the end of Elbow Beach, it is right next to Elbow Beach Resort. If you want a clean room that is right on the beach and great snorkeling, this is the place to be. We prepaid for the breakfast, which is worth it, if you want to eat a full breakfast everyday. We brought our own snorkel gear, so made life easier, although you can rent it at Elbow Beach Resort. If you have fins, bring it. Although there are fish close to shore, the breaking reef is more like 50 yards out. You can eat on the cheap (relative to Bermuda) by going to the market, it is about 6 minutes away (walk down college road, flatter than the other road, use the sidewalk and avoid the one way tire guards, make right at the main road). Buy a roasted chicken, cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, etc. easily feeds 2 for the price of 1. If you want diner type food, or just good cheap food, go to Paraquet, it is 8 minutes away, make left at the main road. We also ate the Lido, which is on the Beach, right next door, expensive (feeds 2 for the price of 4) but enjoyable.

If you want a strong shower and contemporary amenities, you may want to look elsewhere, but you would be missing out on a hidden gem. We toured Fairmont Southhampton and Elbow Beach Resort, both had issues. Fairmont you had to take a bus to the beach. Elbow Beach Resort, you had to walk a thousand steps from the main hotel to the beach.

We were in room 205, from our patio, a few steps, we were either in the alcove or the main beach. Location Location Location.

Room Tip: Get a room in the bottom building, it will be closes to the water, only down side is the walk up to...

My fiancé and I along with my parents visited Coco Reef a few weeks ago. We were on the Island to plan our wedding for next September. This was our 3rd trip to Bermuda (my fiance and I). We booked at Coco Reef because the price was right and the photos of the view we saw on line were spectacular. However we will not be staying at Coco Reef again, nor recommend Coco Reef to friends and family. The staff was not friendly or accommodating, and the rooms are sub par to say the least. I could not turn the shower on in our room, the knob was so hard to pull up my fiancé had to turn the shower on for me, there was mold growing on the cushions on the desk chair and love seat also. In my parents room the stopper in the sink didn't work and the lamp would not turn on. The housekeeping did a great job at cleaning the room on a daily basis but everything else needed serious up-dating. We were rushed through dinner on Friday night because the kitchen was closing at 9...seriously on a Friday!! Saturday we could not get food or dink service at the pool because there was a party on the terrace...that is ridiculous!! The front desk staff and restaurant were just not friendly or accommodating, however the maintenance and housekeeping on the property were very friendly. My fiancé and I are in the hospitality industry, if I were managing this property I would seriously suggest to the owner that the rooms be renovated and the staff be re interviewed for there positions. There are to many other beautiful hotels on the island that go above and beyond to accommodate you while visiting.
