Just returned from our 25th visit to Salt Kettle House. Hazel and her staff continue to provide a home away from home for her many return guests. Hazel had a welcome back cocktail party for the October group, catered by staff members Digna and Moi who whip up some great delacacies. Security has been beefed up with locks on all exterior common area doors. It's unfortunate that this has become nessesary on this island- I remember when we used to sleep with all windows and doors open! Bermuda, I believe is still one of the safest tourist destinations around. If you intend to stay at Salt Kettle, book well in advance as Hazel is currently taking reservations for 2009!!!

My husband and I just returned from a weeks stay at the Salt kettle House in Bermuda and had a wonderful experience. Hazel Lowe is something else. She does her best to make sure you are comfortable from the minute you walk into the living quarters, having you sit down in the dining room with a cold glass of orange juice and a map of the island. She writes down all her favorite places to see and eat and suggests others. Breakfast was a great start to our busy days....Great French Toast!!! We were lucky enough to stay in one of the cottages right on the cove...Pinpoint B....and it had a lovely view of the harbor in Hamilton. It was breathtaking. Every morning I took my cup of coffee out there to just sit and take it all in. Something to remember when I get back home.

The cottage was immaculate. We had a queen size bed which was very soothing after a day of walking around Dockyards and St. Georges. There is a safe in the room which you control and triple locks on the cottage door and a very secure lock on the sliding glass door near the cove. We felt very secure there after hearing about some unfortunate incidents that happened earlier in the year. Nothing to worry about at the Salt Kettle House.

It was a wonderful stay. Thank you Hazel!

We stayed in the small double in the house, not in one of the cottages. It was clean enough and had everything that we needed. However, the carpet is really worn and needs to be replaced, the window airconditioner dripped a lot of water on the floor, the shower drained slowly, and there was some mildew on the bathroom ceiling. That being said, there were two of us and it was $130/night including breakfast, so we weren't expecting too much. We were only in the room to shower and sleep and spent the rest of our time exploring or at the beach, so it didn't matter that the room wasn't beautiful or perfect. Overall, the rest of the property is beautiful, and I have a feeling the cottages are kept up better. Hazel is great and makes the trip a real experience. The location is perfect assuming that you rent a scooter, which we highly advise. Without a scooter, it's a hike to the beach, but close to the ferry. If you want an affordable place to sleep and shower in a good location with lots of character, this is the place for you. If you want a beautiful room to spend part of your day relaxing in, don't get the small double. Perhaps the room in the tower or the cottages are better for that. At $130/night with breakfast, location, and character, I think it's impossible to find a better value.

When we saw the review describing the robbery and assault that occurred at Salt Kettle House my wife and I were obviously concerned, most of all because we were scheduled to arrive May 18 for a 9-day stay.
We called Hazel to inquire further and she managed to quell our fears.
Upon arrival, Hazel very thoroughly briefed us on security procedures and showed us around the property.
Our cottage had deadbolts on the entry door and a latch on the sliding door that left us feeling good about our safety.
The quarters are as advertised, clean and tidy, if somewhat dated.
Breakfasts were delightful, the food very good and cooked to order. Breakfast is from 8-9 am and you'll generally end up meeting all the other guests then.
All in all, we had a wonderful stay and never felt the least bit concerned about our safety.
