My wife and I just returned from a stay at Horizons. Unfortunately, we would not recommend the property, especially with so many top notch places to stay on the island. By way of full disclosure and to provide some balance, there were positives - the ocean views are beautiful, as is the beach at the Coral Beach Club (10 minute walk). Breakfasts and dinners were very good. However, the resort charges top dollar without coming close to delivering commensurate services. We have traveled extensively, and though we have never posted a review of any sort, we felt compelled to do so in this instance because of our extreme disappointment. While not all of our experiences are listed here, these are some of the "highlights".
On our first night dining there, a manager suddenly appeared at our table to to inform us that the service that up to that time had been prominently displayed on the website - breakfast cooked to order in the kitchen of our cottage - was not available. This seemed a strange setting to us to make this proclamation unannounced. Clearly, however, we had been looking forward to this service, especially since it had been listed by others as one of their favorite experiences during their stay. No discernable reason was given for this sudden change, which we were never told about prior to arrival. Further, despite assurances by the manager to the contrary, we were not able to have breakfast delivered either, as a mysterious "form" to be left for housekeeping was nowhere to be found, and the front desk refused to lift a finger to assist us in placing an order. Coffee in the morning was nowhere to be found, until breakfast was served in the dining room beginning at 7:30 a.m. Resorts of all types we have been to have coffee available in the lobby at an early hour, or at least a coffee maker in the room.
Speaking of the front desk - it was a struggle to get the front desk to do anything for us, even in terms of recommending activities. When we asked simply for a boating recommendation, based on pamphlets the resort itself displays in the reception area, no one had any idea about the choices, or even the areas of the island where the boats departed. In fact, in response to our inquiry, one front desk employee barked at another to call and ask each boat company which was better (presumably, each one would have had only glowing things to say about itself).
The water in the pool was green, clearly not well maintained, in our opinion. There was no shuttle service after 4 pm to Coral beach, located at the bottom of a large hill. The one time we used the shuttle, the driver was none too happy to be bothered.
There was also lots of nickle-and-diming, which was shocking for a supposedly hig-end and pricey resort. We have been to a number of nice resorts in Bermuda and elsewhere for purposes of comparison. The resorts sharged $1 each for used golf balls (apparently collected from the property's par 3 course); $10 to borrow barely useable tennis rackets; $10 to use tired golf clubs and another $10 for a greens fee for a tired par 3 course; $10 per use for the exercise room on the coral beach property... the list goes on. In our opinion, these extras add a tacky feel to a property that (for the prices at least) should provide some services for the price other than just the room or cottage itself.
Our timely request for a check-out time one-half hour later (12:30 instead of 12) was refused. The manager did offer another room for our final hour on the property (we left for the aiport at 1 pm), but clearly it made no sense for us to pack up our bags, move to another room, and sit waiting for a cab, when our purpose was to shower and pack just prior to departure.
Cearly something is amiss in terms of management, training, and hiring. This generally tired-in-appearance property may have been up to par in years past, but not now. By the way, despite all the Relais and Chateaux branding all over the property and in the rooms, this is misleading as it is no longer a member of that elite hotel group. After visiting, we suspect we know why.
