“Perfect location for a family holiday on unspoiled beaches”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2012

We chose Clairfont Apartments as we were looking for a self catering apartment for a family holiday close to the South Beaches. Our only worry was that there were very few family reviews on Trip Advisor. For us Clairfont was close to the perfect location for a family holiday on Bermuda. We visited with our two kids (5 and 7) and the apartment had plenty of space which allowed us to put the children to bed in one room and still give us the space to stay up in the other room or hang out on the balcony. The kitchen had everything we needed, the pool was a great spot and caught the late afternoon sun and, best of all, the apartments are just a short walk from what must be one of the best, most unspoiled beaches in the world.

Coreen, who you are bound to meet and read about in other reviews, is the perfect host and could not do more to help us out. This is easy to say and you often read this on reviews but when we were delayed for 6 hours and had to leave at 2:30 in the morning it is at times like this when these qualities are tested (especially with small kids). Coreen not only allowed us a very late checkout but also arranged for us to spend the evening at a hotel close to the airport. She could not have done more and showed not only great service but great care which is a rare commodity today.

There a few minor things that could families may want to bear in mind or things that would have made the stay perfect for us.

The apartments are a reasonable walk (10 to 15 mins) from restaurants. This was not really a problem for us as our kids are quite used to walking and a taxi back was only $7.50 but this is not a place where it is short walk to a long line of family friendly restaurants but if this is the price you pay for access to an unspoiled beach then I know what we would prefer.

The pool is unheated which was cold in April. This did nothing to stop our kids from swimming every day and raving about it but I only tempted in once and had a great time (albeit briefly) but in April you are not likely to spend too much time in the pool.

Our only real regret we had about our stay was that our kids love to meet other children and there was only one other family staying when we visited who left after only one meeting. They too had nothing but good things to stay about Clairfont and every morning raced to the beach.

For us it was close to perfect and I would recommend it to any family.

Room Tip: We were in Apartment 5 which had a very large double bedroom and a lounge / kitchen that had two sof...

We stayed at The Clairfont in 2010 for one month & loved it. We stayed again in 2011 for another 4 weeks & loved it. We are already booked in for a month next year with the option to stay longer !

Perfect location for exploring the South Shore beaches and pretty coves all within walking distance. The walk from Warwick Long Bay to Horseshoe Bay is beautiful.

The apartment on arrival was absolutely spotless, thank you to Corrine and her girls.

The bus stop is just 100 yds away and the Bermuda bus service is excellent. Buy a month pass from the bus station if you are staying for 4 weeks or longer - $55 and enjoy unlimited travel that includes the ferry from Hamilton to Dockyard & Dockyard to St Georges which is one end of the island to the other. The number 7 bus takes you to town.

Corrine the Manager is worth a special mention, she is so on the ball and there to help whenever needed and is the icing on the cake for this little gem.

If you are looking for self-catering then do not hesitate to book one of these apartments. We go to Bermuda every year and have stayed at other venues, including one of the top luxury south shore hotels and now that we have found The Clairfont we have no intention of staying anywhere else . Home from home. Perfect.

Bermuda and her people are fabulous, so friendly and polite, we love it. With traditional values that are hard to find these days. During our stay my wife lost her gold watch on the bus, I lost my hat at Fort St Catherine and my wife left her hat at Woodys a restaurant used by the locals (great fish sandwich) and we got all three items back. Thank you to those honest people

There is also so much to do on the island and even after a month we have still not done everything we wanted to get through.

Just a few RECOMENDATIONS from some of things we did …..

• Go see Johnny Barnes – an 83 year old local gent (Mr Happy) who gets up at 2am every day to wave and blow kisses to everyone on their way into Hamilton – he has done this for 50 years!! Find him on the Hamilton roundabout FROM 4am (!) until 10am bus route 7 into town from the Clairfont will find him. Get the 0920hrs bus from the top of the road.
• Visit Dockyard – excellent guided tours by `Tim`. See Governors House and the fort. Good shops.
• Visit St Georges – guided tour is excellent – meet the mayor and town crier and see the wench ducking.
• Visit Hamilton – guided tours of cathedral – parliament and Hamilton Fort. Go up the Cathedral tower for a good view of the city.
• Do the pink beaches
• Eat out – Tom Moores and Elbow Beach both excellent – there are many more to choose from. Have a fish chowder from somewhere.
• Eat in - `The Supermarket` on Front St in Hamilton is top quality with other good `Market Place` shops around the island. On arrival call in on your way from the airport for the first groceries – ask the driver to stop at Paget Market Place, South Shore Road – a taxi from the airport should be bet $45 & $50 depending how long it takes you to grab the milk and a few bits.
• Go up the lighthouse on the south shore – a fantastic view of the whole island.
• Fort St Catherine is a really great example of the islands history & the beach next to it is where it all began. Tobacco bay nearby is a good shallow spot for a paddle, swimming and snorkeling.
• Crystal Caves are the best show caves we have seen anywhere to date.
• Get hold of the leaflet with all the FREE events and guided tours. There is something for every day of the week.
• Underwater Institute in Hamilton and the BIOS (Bermuda Institute Ocean Science) in St Georges also do interesting tours.
• Check out the Railway Trail – a good spot is from Somerset Bridge along the trail to the Scaur Fort
• The Aquarium in Flatts top quality – not too big.
• Do the Botanical gardens – some amazing trees.
• Check out local websites and the Bermuda Tourist Board Facebook page for things like herb walks and local events – we did a couple of local markets and charity events too with bagpipes and dancing.
• We joined the Bermuda walking group who meet early every Sunday – a good way to meet people and find out what is current and to see things off the beaten track. Google them.
• Get to know the local people who are so friendly. Through the hospitality of the locals we found lots to do including a piano recital by a world-renowned concert pianist being held in a small church to a handful of people. We’re not into the arts but it was a real treat.
• We joined the Bermuda National Trust and met more lovely people – we get to use the passes back home too.
• We were lucky enough to see the Xmas tree switch on at City Hall with a great atmosphere. City Hall also has art and concerts – check out what’s on.
• Watch the sun go down – The Reefs for a coffee is a great spot for this.

IF YOU GET BORED GO TO THE BEACH !!!!

We have done some amazing beach holidays (Maldives, Mauritius & many Caribbean) but where Bermuda scores the best is the beautiful pink sand and contrast with the stunning white limestone and volcanic black rock formations, blue sea and lush green plants – if that wasn’t perfect enough with 28c in Nov then there are NO BEACH SELLERS. A good place to see the `pink effect` is Warwick Long Bay – 200 yards from the Clairfont – regarded by many as the pinkest on the island.

The one thing hard to put into words is the light. There is an almost effervescent shimmering brightness, which just adds that something special to the experience – you can see this at its best on an evening along the south shore & if you stay at The Clairfont it will be at your fingertips. Romantic at its best.

In the words of my wife “Bermuda will steal your heart”

I just returned from a lovely 3 night stay in a studio apartment (#2). Given the price of every other hotel I saw in Bermuda, I was concerned that this place would be of much lower caliber because it rents for a much cheaper price. But I was so happy to be wrong! Our unit was spacious, clean and had all the amenities we needed (in-room safe, cable TV, king bed). Corrine was very eager to give us information to make our stay more enjoyable, and everyone we spoke to on staff was courteous and friendly. We were just a 5 minute walk from some beautiful, uncrowded beaches and across the street from a bus stop so we could get to a supermarket, restaurants, other hotels and tourist sites. During our stay we would eat breakfast in our room, go across the street and stroll the beach for a few hours, come back to the room to make a light lunch and then sit by the Clairfont pool for a few more hours before catching the bus to a resort hotel for dinner. This was a perfect way to have a fulfilling, affordable trip to Bermuda by saving some $ on lodging and cooking some meals ourselves. I would definitely recommend the Clairfont Apartments and would return for future visits.

Room Tip: There aren't many units available so reserve early

My wife and I stayed at the apartments from Oct 20-23rd for a short, very unplanned getaway to Bermuda. I must say, after booking the airfare, everyone told me how expensive Bermuda was going to be. We are expecting a second child in January so we wanted to do a final beach getaway before number 2 comes and going off of tripadvisor reviews, we chose the Clairfont Apartments.

The vacation was wonderful. The apartments, we stayed in a one bedroom, are large, fully equipped, clean and have everything you need for an extended stay.

Corinne, who you will read a lot about on this site, is great. She gives you a full recap of the island, the bus routes, things to do, etc. Everything she tells you is dead on. If the beach is 5 minutes away, it really is 5 minutes away. We traveled with a 22 month old and had a very relaxing wonderful getaway.

The apartments have a nice crib, it was great, our daughter slept like she was at home leaving my wife and I time to relax for the night.

The people of the island are very nice as well. Corinne arranged for a taxi for us to pick us up at the airport. Do this. It is about 10 dollars more expensive than the normal fare, but Corinne arranges you to get bus passes for the island (NO RENTAL CARS FOR VISITORS) and to stop at the supermarket.

I was on Supermarket sweep running through getting all the groceries as the only time the cab meter runs (flat fare from the airport) is when you are getting groceries, we got just the right about of food for 3 days. Perfect.

If you are coming here and want to really experience the island without the big hotel nonsense, this is the place for you.

My wife and I have stayed at huge 5 star resorts to small small rooms in Paris, this is a great value and would highly recommend.

Also for parents with small children, there is a playground right across the street from the apartments and also the Horseshoe Bay (15 - 20 min walk) has a great cove for your children to experience the water!

We just got back from 5 nights at Clairfont in Bermuda. We stayed in a studio apartment (#1) and were happy to find that we were a very short (~ 5 min) walk from the beautiful south shore beaches!! The location is quiet and beautiful. The apartments are clean, have many unexpected amenities (full kitchen, safe, digital cable, etc), and are a great value! I cannot say enough nice things about the owner, Corrine. She is a lovely woman and will go out of her way to help you. For example, on our last day we weren't scheduled to leave until later in the afternoon, and she allowed us to use one of the other unoccupied apartments to shower/rest before our flight after check out at no extra charge. On your first day there, she will give you a introduction to the apartment and the island. We enjoyed many of her suggestions, including Friday night happy hour at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess and dinner at the Swizzle Inn.

We had Corrine arrange a taxi for us from the airport, which I highly recommend. The taxi line was very long when we got out of the airport, and it was nice to be able to walk right up to our driver. The cost is about the same as a normal taxi (we paid ~$40 with the tip). We took Corrine's recommendation and rented a scooter for our time there through Orleander Cycles. It was very nice to not have to rely on taxis and buses. Orleander will pick you up and drop you off directly from Clairfont to get your bike and the apartments have room to park right outside. We also really enjoyed renting a boat from Sommerset Bridge Watersports to snorkel and travel to beaches on the small islands.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon the Clairfont Apartments when I was researching accomodations for our family trip to Bermuda. I was looking for something close to the beaches on the south coast yet easily accessible to Hamilton and Dockyard. I also wanted a place where we could relax and not be wound up into the frenzy of resort living. I wanted a place where we could cook some of our own meals, knowing how expensive it would be for a family of four to eat every meal out. Well.....Clairfont Apartments meet all of the criteria and more. We were so please with everything including the big bonus.... Corinne, Andrea and Nicole. These ladies run a top notch place. Thanks Clairfont... we hope to see you again.
