I stayed here last weekend but was supposed to stay until Wednesday. Our room (suite) was so run down and the beach so disappointing, that we left and stayed at the Princess in Southampton and PAID LESS.
The doors were damaged from what looked like a flood and were never repaired, the appliances were old, airconditioner on the patio leaked and covered half the patio with water, so we could not sit there. The tub was damaged and patched with something, The beach has a cliff that is crumbling above it and to me you use it at your own risk! The access to the beach includes walking over what look like ruins form a bygone era that are slippery....no chairs, lounges, or any service on the beach at all. This really feels like a cheap apartment complex to me, not a resort. The tiny pool was never clean, even though the bar staff seemed bored and could have been skimming it.
WORSTOF ALL: the windows are so old that there is an actual gap and they did not close and the sounds from outside made you feel like you were camping! The whistling frogs in Bermuda add to the charm and I love them, but I do not want them to sound like they are on my pillow!! We did not sleep at all the first night and left after the second only because we had to pay for two nights.
I have never written one of these and the only reason I did this time was that the price was what really upset me. It's ok to rent out rooms that are not brand new, but charge accordingly!! Esspecially in this economic climate. THe resort sould be trying to get people in to the place.
We paid $199 at the Princess (4-5 star hotel) and $385 at the Surfside!!)
I have been to Bermuda quite a bit over the years. I have stayed at the finest resorts as well as some house keeping cottages. I chose Surf Side because of last minute availability for a group of friends. Bermuda is expensive.............. Dinner out for four can be between 200 and 400 dollars. A very nice resort or hotel will run you well over 700.00 a night for a standard room in season......... Having said that we found Surf Side to be a reasonable and nice setting for our long weekend............ We stayed in one bedroom suites. They were very large and had nice views. Both rooms were typical house keeping cottage style with a shabby overtone........ This is Bermuda. Only recently are you seeing St Regis or Ritz style rooms at the resorts. The location is great. It is dead center on the south shore and makes it a great base for the entire island. We found the employees to be very helpful and the rooms clean. Access to what is left of their private beach is not any different than other cliff dwellings along Bermudas rocky coast. You are a hop skip and a jump away from the best south shore beaches anyway. .................. If you loved your grand parents OLD beach house you will love this place. If you are looking for a Ritz , or cruiseship nightlife seek elsewhere......... I love Bermuda, its a quirky beautiful and safe place to relax. Not typical, and not for everyone.

We have been to Bermuda 20 times, and stayed at some of the most expensive resorts, and also at some of the least expensive B&B's. Surf Side Beach Club offered what we wanted. Lovely room with a kitchen, beautiful view of the ocean, very attentive staff who kept the room immaculate, and provided fresh flowers daily, and not least certainly a great location convenient to the best beaches. Surf Side did not disappoint us in anyway.
Made a last minute, late March reservation via Travelocity and got a double room for $75/night. We were the last guests to arrive and were upgraded to a suite. Seems like almost every room as a great view of the Ocean and all had terraces. Rooms are comfortable – not furnished with top of the line furniture but it’s a tropical/humid climate so there is generally more wear and tear than usual. It's not a luxury hotel but stellar location makes up for a somewhat worn down facility. Room did have a TV with cable service (and the suite had a small kitchen), plenty of pillows and was very clean. Grounds were well kept and lush.
Greatest benefit of Surf Side was its terrific location on the South Shore and bus stop in front of the hotel entrance (it’s a short walk up the hill from South Road to where the hotel sits high on a cliff.) Bermuda taxis are very expensive and the ability to easily use the bus is a great economic benefit. (You can travel from the airport by bus with a switch in Hamilton.) The South Shore "Swizzle Inn" is a 5 minute walk (bar seemed popular with locals and restaurant had a mix.) There is gas station/convenience store about a 3 minute walk down South Road which makes it easy and cheap to pick up croissant/muffins/coffee for breakfast. March is off-season for the hotel so the restaurant was not open.
The hotel has a pool which was open (and well maintained in March) but it wasn't heated. When we visited the beach was washed over but there is beach access available a few yards down the road. Because the hotel is on a cliff the beach is accessed by stairs and even though the water covered the sand, there was a nice look out and you could walk along the rocks near the water.
Staff was extremely nice and helpful (Front Desk called a taxi for us on Sunday night when buses don't run and helped with dinner reservation.)
One of my most enjoyable visits to Bermuda (I'm a 20+ time veteran) because of great location and ease of transport. To be able to get into Hamilton in just 10-15 minutes, easily and cheaply but still have that great Ocean setting makes Surf Side stand out as a great economic (or don't crave luxury) Bermuda option.
