I have probably stayed at the Rosedon 8 or 10 times so far (and am returning later this month) and I am very familiar with Bermuda and other accommodation options, so I feel the need to share my experiences with other Trip Advisor readers. I try to be objective in my reviews (I travel worldwide for business) as I find objective submissions extremely helpful when I am making my own travel plans.
I think the main reason why people are disappointed with the Rosedon is the price. The rates are $300+ depending on the season, and compared to much of the world, this would translate into a 5* resort or similar. Well, people should be aware that if you travel to Bermuda, you should expect EVERYTHING to be two or three times the price as in Canada or the US (and other places). Bermuda is as much (or more) a destination for banking, re-insurance, and financial institutions and business in general as it is a tourist destination, and unfortunately nothing in Bermuda gets to escape the inflated prices. All that being said, I have never been able to find a place of better value in such a great location (especially since the wonderful full breakfast delivered poolside, on the porch, or to your room is included). The rooms are indeed just average, but they are charming and clean and very much reflect 'old' Bermuda.
I can't speak as to why other visitors have had poor experiences with service. I have almost always had exceptional experiences with the staff, and will never stay elsewhere as they always remember my name, welcome me back, and when I get to my room there is ALWAYS a bottle of wine on ice with a 'Welcome Back' note from the manager - VERY nice touch! A few things I can say about Bermudians in general is that they tend to be very polite, professional, eloquent, but not always exuberant or enthusiastic as many travelers tend to be - maybe 'reserved' is the right word, so perhaps this lack of enthusiasm (not to be mistaken with plain rudeness) mirrored back to an excited guest was disappointing for some people.
To be honest, I have heard from a colleague that he had ants in his room once, which I believe he said they sprayed for immediately, but I have never heard of rats or cockroaches (although I have seen HUGE toads on the poolside lawn at night - worth going exploring for)!
The pool area is great and freshly renovated - they removed the diving board :( , but if you are more interested in the beach, the front desk will provide the transportation to a beautiful beach!
The afternoon tea is lovely with things like banana bread and finger sandwiches and, of course, tea.
Tuesday night Swizzle night cannot be missed - great fun and awesome food and live music. Super way to meet the staff and other guests!
I do agree that the rooms in the main building are nicer than those around the pool, but I personally prefer to be around the pool - you have direct access to the outside and the gardens and I just feel a bit more independent.
The location is fantastic as it is within walking distance of EVERYTHING you need: downtown shops and restaurants, buses, ferry.
Bermuda is a wonderful, classy, high-end island destination. It is not for the all-inclusive crowd that you might find in Mexico, Cuba, or the Dominican Republic, and tends to be more of a popular destination for British retirees, although the nightlife there is fantastic (check out Cafe Cairo on Front Street for a great dinner, followed by a full-out nightclub feel - they even serve Sheesha!). The food throughout Bermuda is probably the best and most consistent I have had anywhere in the world - I have yet to have a bad meal, although I have had a few run-ins with inattentive and slow service.
I hope that people will consider visiting Bermuda and staying at the Rosedon if they are looking for simple, realistic accommodations for their money. Remember that your dollar in Bermuda does not go NEARLY as far as we are used to!
I personally find the Rosedon to be a wonderful, charming place to stay! I will continue to stay here on my trips to Bermuda!
