Resort Overview and location:
La Cabana Beach and Resort Club is a large mid-rise unit on Eagle Beach. There is a street to cross to get to the beach, and the walkways are well marked and the cars are traveling slowly and respect the pedestrian right of way. There are approximately 400 units here and some of the units are apparently run or owned by Blue/Green Resorts. There is ample parking for rental cars. One of the comments we heard was that it was quite a walk to the high-rise hotel area where most of the local restaurants are located. There is bus service that can be used. We normally rent a car on all of our vacations and have found that a local guidebook and a map is all you need. Be sure you get a map that shows all the roads! The island is not large, but the roads are not marked and the signs will point toward towns, not street names.
One unique thing we discovered is that there are different weeks for several of the buildings, so not all 400 units need to be checked out on one day and re-checked in. Some buildings are Thursday-Thursday, some Friday-Friday, etc. The guest services desk is open 24/7 and is run very efficiently and folks are helpful and friendly. If you are checking in with a large group, there were 4-5 staff members on the desk, so long waits are not a common occurrence.
We were welcomed in by the Blue/Green representative after check in and he presented the property features as well as giving us some ideas on what to do. We were invited to the timeshare presentation but declined saying that we had 4 units now and were not really in the market for another. He thanked us and told to share our good experiences when we got home. We were never approached again about timesharing. That is a class act!
The resort has 400 units in configurations of Studio, One Bedroom, One bedroom mini-suite, two bedroom, and three bedroom.
We had a one bedroom unit (exchanged a 3/2 for it), but it was OK because there were just two of us. Rough dimensions were – Bedroom (closest to the hall and outside door which let a lot of hall noises into the room) 12/12, Living, Dining area, small kitchen all in one 12 X 13. Small bath and very nice stand up and seated shower along the hallway connecting the two. There is a glass paneled door leading to a tiny balcony that held 2 chairs and a small table.
Condition of property and unit:
The units are apparently just being finished with upgrades and freshening. Our unit was clean and in excellent repair. In the bath there were two showerheads (One on a hose) supplied from a quality firm (Beckman) which was quite a treat. Hallways were clean and well lighted, and exteriors and landscaping in 1st class condition.
Kitchen features: Small kitchen with little counter space, but everything was in like-new condition and would work well for a couple or a small family. There are gas BBQ grills on the patio that are easy to use even though it is fair distance to carry everything. We generally cook our breakfast each day and then eat out for the other meals. There is a full sized refrigerator with icemaker plus free ice machines are available.
Planned Resort Activities: There is a fully staffed recreation desk in the property and daily activities for adults and children are planned. The pool area is large, plenty of seating , and has water slides for the young at heart.
Resort Amenities: See either the website or Interval for details. Free WiFi is available in several public areas, if you want it in your room, there is a paid WiFi card available for $35 per week. We took the second option and it was fast enough for most applications, but would be far too slow to stream movies. There is a small convenience store at the hotel and several major grocery stores within a mile or two.
Restaurants: There is a Sbarro pizza restaurant on site. The main dining room , The Islander, serves all three meals and has some special evenings with menu features. The food is quite good and charges are within reason for the island. Las Ramblas, and upscale outdoor patio and grill is ultra-nice, serves a limited but excellent menu, and reservations are necessary. We had trouble reaching them for our reservation, so I called the front desk and they confirmed the reservation within minutes. Pata Pata bar has a nice happy hour daily and service in all three locations is excellent.
Additional Fees and Assessments: There is an additional electricity charge that will be explained at check-in. The charge was about $10 per day.
Room Tips: At this time there is major construction ongoing for a new casino. Rooms facing that construction area will be noisy during the day. From their map, the most affected rooms would be 204-218.
Check for construction during 2012 and early 2013.
