My wife and I honeymooned there in mid September. We had the honeymoon package. We spent the first day and a half relaxing before we started exploring the island. One of the first things that we did after we rested up was go on the exotic safari island tour. It was a great tour, and it gave us a good overview of the island, but there is some hiking involved, especially when we went to the natural pool, and it helps to be in good shape if you are going to go there.
We rented a “Jimmy”, which is a small convertible SUV. It was about $200 for 3 days, but it was was worth it. It allowed us to explore the island at our own pace. Also make sure you visit the Alta Vista chapel. It is one of the most beautiful churches in the world.
The sunset sail came with the honeymoon package. It was an all you can drink sail on a large catamaran. The cruise left from the De Palm pier, cruised south to the end of the lowrise zone and then cruised back north to the end of the high rise zone and back to the pier. My wife liked it. To me it was a glorified booze cruise. I was not impressed. Would I do it again, no.
We dined at many restaurants. Here are some of our comments.
The Flying Fishbone
This restaurant is as close to perfect as you can get. The food, the view, the service are incredible. My wife's lobster bisque was the best that she ever tasted. I am not a fish lover, so I had the beef. It was incredible. It’s a hard restaurant to find, but it is worth it. We went there on a Thursday night and my wife said that she wished we had saved it for the last night of the trip. It’s pricey, but it was the best restaurant we went to on our trip.
Papiamento:
This is the second best restaurant in Aruba; The Flying Fishbone being number one. If you don't feel like traveling to the other side of the island to the Flying Fishbone, go here. We went there the last night of our trip. The service was impeccable. At no time did my water glass ever become empty.
Texas de Brazil:
This restaurant was the most pleasant surprise of the whole trip. As the name implies, it’s a meat place, but it also has an incredible salad bar. When you are at the salad bar just make sure that you leave some room for the meat. The beef and pork were great! Great service. Highly recommended.
The Pirates Nest:
We had the romantic dinner on the beach that came with the honeymoon package. The food was average, but the setting was incredible. It was very romantic. We also ordered lunch from there one day when we were lounging on the beach, it was okay. On just about any review for the Bucuti, you will read about the restaurant being its weak point. We agree. It is a disappointing part of an otherwise great hotel.
Gasparito:
This was the biggest disappointment of our trip. The restaurant had received some very good reviews, so our expectations were high. The service was slow even though the restaurant was not very full. I had the house salad as an appetizer, which could have come out of any Sizzler in the US. The keshi yena, although tasty reminded me of barbequed pulled chicken. This restaurant is very overrated.
French Steakhouse:
We went to dinner the first night that we were on the island. We were staying next door at the Bucuti. This is a good although unspectacular restaurant. If you want a nice restaurant within walking distance, this is for you. The prices are comparable to other restaurants. The food is good and the service was average.
Pizza Bob’s:
We went there the afternoon that we arrived. The pizza was okay. The drinks are bigger, stronger and cheaper than the Pirates nest. It’s a nice alternative to the Pirates Nest.
Here are some of the pros and cons of the hotel:
Pros:
Excellent concierge staff. They consistently went out of their way for us. We put a lot of trust in them for advice as to where to go and they came through.
Excellent beach.
Few if any children.
The room was immaculate and beautifully decorated.
Cons:
You cannot bring food out of the dining area. We would have liked to have been able to do that. The rooms have beautiful balconies overlooking the ocean and it is a shame not being able to eat your breakfast out there.
The restaurant could be better, as I mentioned above. The restaurant is something that keeps this hotel from being a truly extroraordinary hotel.
Would we go back, yes.
