Stayed here for 3 days in early July with 2 preteen sons and my DH. Let me state right away that we had just come from the Tamarijn Resort on Druif Beach (where we stayed for 4 nights) and had stayed a week back in 2006 at the Radisson, just a half mile away. Perhaps, if the order of our hotels stay this trip had been reversed, this review might be different. Here goes:
We read alot of mixed reviews before arriving and had chosen the Surf Club mainly because we wanted our sons to meet other kids and for the lazy river and slide. In these aspects, the hotel delivers. The pool area is truly lovely and there are lots of kids everywhere. There is also a game room for those video addicted.
However, this is a hotel we would not return to. Upon arrival, Franklin greeted us, shook hands, took our luggage and gave us check in instructions. We were off to a good start.....unfortunately, the front desk staff didn't seem to know what a smile was. Our room was not ready so we thought we'd look around a bit. After 45 mins, we returned and were again met with (different) grumpy front desk staff...and still no room was ready (tho' others had come and been checked in after us). After another 20 mins, a trainee (whom we hadn't seen earlier) smiled (hooray!) and "found" a room.
Upon entering the room, we were not impressed. Yes there were granite countertops on the bath vanity but we have those at home and the rest of the room decor, while fine, reminded us of a New England room, rather than something in the Caribbean. The size (we had a "lock out" as we didn't plan to spend much time in it) was no larger than the room at the Tam (where we had left many smiling employees) and had a miniscule balcony. Oh well, we weren't there for that.
Heading down to the pools and beach was an experience. As it was mid afternoon, every pool lounger was taken. Every single one. And they were all literally edge to edge and were the "strap" type I've never found comfortable. At the beach, there were so many rows of "biminis", crowded palapas and chairs that I wondered if we needed a periscope to see the water. There was also apparently a fishing contest going on that day so the place was packed with boats, beer tents, etc. At that point we headed back to the pool.
And, again, they are lovely. What others have written is true, tho', the wind (especially by the pool with the slide) will blow you away (literally--or at least your items). Since it was happy hour, the swim up bar was packed 3-4 people deep.
Another gripe: lack of info about activities. Again, the front desk staff didn't have any handouts (nor were they in our welcome package) about what took place when. There were generic signs posted in the elevators such as "Wed--Bingo" but it tooking asking the security guards (who were the most helpful staff we ran across other than Franklin) before we were directed to the location of the concierge to pick up a more specific list. Again, perhaps owners more familiar with the Marriott system may have known this info that we "guests" had to figure out on our own. By the way, in addition to the "towel game/morning line-up" and the "towel color guard", you will also need your "pool bracelet" to use the waterslide.
Since we spent the majority of our days at the Surf Club off property doing excursions, I don't know that I can give it a fair review---and I want to point out that it does have a great perk of free use washers and dryers on the first floor --but I do know that there wasn't anything appealing enough to bring us back.
One other note: as there is no real eatery on property (the Marketplace does offer box salads/sandwiches, muffins, and other lite fare) alot of reviewers talk about Moombas right next door on the beach. We ate there in 06 and again this trip but found that Hadicurari just before it has even better service, higher quality food and a lower price.
My advice? If you want a place with lots of Americans who like to keep active and lots to do (once you figure the system out), stay here. If you want a relaxing vacation with a palaypa of your own and a Corona like view where people from all over the world treat you like friends, stay at the Tamarijn.
