I am an owner at the Surf Club and this is my third time at the resort. My husband and I along with two of our best friends stayed in a two bedroom unit from May 10th to the 17th. Once again we were in awe of the splendor that is the Surf Club. Our rooms on the 12th floor were spotless, well supplied, quiet and of course had a fantastic view of the ocean.
We spent equal amounts of time at the beach and in the lazy river. Previous posts state that you cannot use the lazy river if you are staying at the Ocean club but we met several couples who just went up to the towel hut and asked for bracelets and were allowed to use the river. However, when we tried to use the chairs on the beach at the Ocean Club we were told no. The beach at the Surf Club was great but it was less crowded at the Ocean Club. As far as the mucky sand issue most previous posts were right on. It is very nice until about thirty feet out and then you get into the icky, mucky feeling and the sulfur smell wafts to the surface. In fact you had to go almost to the Marriott hotel to avoid this feeling/smell if you wanted to wander into deeper waters. For us it wasn't too big of an issue since most of time we were floating but I can see how people could be grossed out by this. As far as crowds go they said the Surf Club was at capacity but I never felt like it was super crowded. One of the bartenders said its because during peak times most units that sleep eight have eight people in them and during off season most units have four people in them. Made sense to us. We used the market place as little as possible since the prices are a tad high. We ate at Simply Fish at sunset and had incredible meals. The prices are about average there for a nice restaurant, the service was stellar and the views and atmosphere were impossible to top. I highly recommend this for a romantic setting with good food. We also at the pool bar/snack place a few times. Food was average. We took advantage of the happy hour from 3-5 everyday where drinks were two for one. The specials repeated themselves every three days was the only downside.
Go to Target and buy your own float for 5.99 before you go. Everyone in the lazy river had done this so it must have been posted previous. I knew from past visits. The chair type floats work best.
Restaurants we ate at:
Texas de' Brazil Excellent Salad Bar, best meat lovers place there is.
Smokey Joes Best cheeseburger in Aruba, Great Ribs.
Papiamento A couple of miles from Surf Club, 7$ cab ride and worth every cent. This restaurant is located on an old plantation and you eat outside under the canopy of some very old beautiful trees. I had the grouper with parmesan sauce and it was the best fish I've ever had in my life.
We also ate downtown at Don Carlos and found it to be so-so. Nice location right on the water but the food wasn't anything special. We are a bit picky about Italian food so it could just be us.
We snorkeled at Arashi Beach and found a few cool things. Lots of starfish, lots of cool looking fish but not much coral to see. The beach is very nice and I think there were only about 15 people on it. So if you want seclusion this is the place to go.
I really have no complaints what so ever. A wonderful vacation expierence.
