“Slipping a little”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

I recently went to Aruba for the 10th week in the last 8 years. I have stayed at the Surf Club and the Ocean Club each several times. I took 10 friends with us this time and we all had a good time. The thing that I have noticed over time is the discourteous attitude of the staff. At one point I asked the girl at the check in if she was mad at me for some reason.(she was just sullen and rude) I asked several people throughout the week on the beach if they had noticed any attitude changes over time, and everyone had similar thoughts. They all said that the locals seem to act tired of the vacationers, and did not want to go beyond the call for most needs. The food prices are getting out of hand at most restaurants, and the quality seems to be going down.
Surf club staff look tired and put out by the customers, frowns and distant attitudes. I know that people stop asking for help at some point, and if they do they will stop coming back. Repeat visitors are the backbone of tourism. I love Aruba and I don't want to stop coming, but I don't think I can get my wife back there. We make our own fun, but discomfort in the Surf Club property starts the visit off negatively.
I realize that americans seem a little spoiled, but that is because we live out lives that way. Not a negative thing, just an expectation. We will find places that will accommodate our needs.
I think the Island in general is slipping a little. I send this review as a warning to all concerned, because I have read several reviews of many different resorts on the beach, and many point out that the buildings are deteriorating (furnishings and others) not just Marriott buildings, but several other places. I hope this is just taken as an honest opinion so that this may be noticed and addressed. Good luck to all.

This is our second year back at the Surf Club and was just as great of an experience as the first. The condos are very well appointed , pools are immaculate and you have quite a few to choose from...serenity,lazy river, family pool,or waterfall slide pool. Your balconies are all facing the ocean and beautiful gardens and 4 can sit comfortably. Nice fresh beach towels are supplied daily as well as tags to mark your pool chairs for the day. Beach is very congested and has a ton of rental items that make the beach experience noisy and crowded. The solution is easy...just a very short walk past the hotel and you have a quiet refuge...just bring a towel to lay on. Security at this resort is excellent and well monitored...never felt unsafe or freaked out. The casino is very ample and has the usual tables, slots etc..lobby sushi bar was mediocre at best ,Ruth's Chris is excellent!
The resort has shuttles to and from all offerings on the property. Very nice experience and making memories with the people you love! Thanks Marriott...

Room Tip: All towers are nicely done...condos are great to cook in so pack a large cooler of food and check it...

This is a great place to stay if you have children with you. The amenities are great.Views are beautiful especially at night. Service is great. The only missing link is Wi-fi is not in the rooms. They are in the process of updating for the next year or so but if you bring your own router down you will be able to have Wi-fi in your room.
It is very hot in Aruba, plenty of sun screen is needed. If you are adventurous and would like to travel the back roads of Aruba make sure you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle as the back roads are mostly unpaved and rough. There is some great photography at the ruins on the beach and the Colorado Lighthouse; Baby Beach is a local beach that is partially shaded by palm trees and thatched covered roofs. Very breezy - hats do not stay on and if it rains the sun is always out within minutes.
Very casual and low keyed.

Room Tip: The rooms are fully equipped so you can go to the store and buy some simple breakfast foods and pre...

This was our 1st visit to Aruba and stayed 7 nights on 9th floor of the tower facing BBQ/Pool/Ocean. Lazy River flotation devices were conveniently recycled in elevator area by departing guests many evenings. Internet in rooms by cable and worked well. Rooms very comfortable and well kept; minor issues were resolved quickly by staff. (Occupants of our 2BR, 2BA full kitchen suite were owners and also Marriott Rewards Gold if that mattered.) Glad we had a rental car as Surf Club pools and frontage on Palm Beach were very busy -- felt crowded with furniture even when few people were there. Thus we drove to nearby, more enjoyable Eagle Beach which had less wind, far fewer people/furniture, and free parking right at the beach. It seems like the island has many microclimates as it was far windier in Surf Club parking lot (and points north toward California Lighthouse) than Eagle Beach and points south. One pro diver told us clarity for snorkeling & diving was best this year from Aug to Dec, amplified by constant winds & 2 days of relatively heavy rains during our 2nd week in Jan. Strongly recommend jeep/high clearance vehicle for visiting any part of national park. When raining, the dinner restaurants on the 3 adjacent Marriott properties were VERY crowded w/ long wait times (during NFL playoff games) so we ended up eating pizza poolside under the drippy tarps. Iguana, lizards, and beautiful birds can be seen on and near property but did see one aggressive iguana try to grab food poolside from young child. There are several large, newer groceries on main road (right side) from Airport to resort to stock up your kitchen (tho most are closed on Sunday).

Room Tip: Avoid a room facing north, perpendicular to ocean as it gets a lot of wind. Lower level rooms below...

I recently stayed at the Marriott Aruba Surf Club for 7 nights. This was my first time in Aruba and I had an unbelievable time. I highly recommend bringing your own floats so you can enjoy the lazy river or just hang out while floating at the beach. You can always buy one at the gift shop. Take extra sunscreen because I ran out the 2nd day and the prices are highly inflated at the gift shops. Had a great time playing beach volleyball, enjoyed the Jolly Pirates booze cruise/snorkeling, and the tube rides. The casino (Hyatt casino my favorite) was a great time and I highly recommend doing the Kuku Kanuku party bus...it brings you all around the island to fun, local bars. I have absolutely no complaints about the service or property...they have a list of activities you can take advantage of each day or just chill by the pool or beach. Most relaxing week I've had in a long time!

We stayed at the marriott surf. We love this hotel because of the proximity of the beach and shopping. We walked down to the shops in front of the high rise hotels. There is an old man that sells licence plates that can be customized. DO NOT BUY ONE!!! He claims it takes 5 days to make one and if he can't get it to your hotel before you leave he will ship it. We bought on December 12. We paid the extra 10 bucks to have it sent. Haven't seen it yet. Just a warning for the "Steeler Nation" on this one. (yes, we do travel!)

Room Tip: One bedrooms overlook the courtyard. Can't see the ocean from 2nd floor.

We stayed 7 nights. Every day, by mid-morning, walking through the pool areas was a challenge due to the overwhelming number of chaise lounge chairs that groups occupy and move around thereby obstructing pathways. Although the beach is wide and lovely, it's completely populated start to shoreline with beach chairs and people. January in Aruba is probably not the best time to go away to relax, especially at this resort which is full of families and small children. The kids seemed to be having a great time, but it's not a romantic getaway. We saw many families cooking at the outdoor grills, letting the kids run around, which I think is great....if you are also there with small kids, which we were not. The kitchen's are equipped with the basics for putting together a meal. I would recommend bringing plastic wrap and baggies for storing your leftovers.

Room Tip: Aim for a high floor to get away from the music and noise around the many pools and tiki huts.
