“Okay, But Has Deteriorated Over the Years”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2007

My family is currently staying at the Ocean Club. We are having a nice time and my three kids really love it. On the positive side, it is nice to have the option to use the pool at all of the Marriott facilities (which are located next to one another). It is also nice that the Ocean Club is a little bit quieter than the Surf Club, so you can enjoy the scene over there, but still come back to the relative quiet of the Ocean Club. The kids programs are very good. They have a lot of activites and my kids love going.

On the negative side, the Surf Club (which still has two more buildings to open), is very crowded. I don't know how they will accomodate all of the people when the other buildings are finished. My kids enjoy using the water slide at the Surf Club, but that area of the pool has been covered with white styro foam pellets that are flying into the pool from the construction on the new buildings above. It is a bit disgusting. At the Ocean Club, the hot tub is disgustingly dirty (I heard several guests say they complained to management) and the pool is not always the cleanest. I am also exhausted from having to get up at the crack of dawn to wait in line for the towel hut to open in order to reserve a palapa on the beach and reserve seats at the pool. There has to be a better way of doing things.

We visited in 2001 and loved Aruba and the Ocean Club. My family is having a nice time now, but things have definitely gone downhill. The property is getting a bit old and the majority of the staff seem unfriendly, unhappy and often rude. The last time we were here, the Aruban people were very nice and helpful and the island seemed to be much nicer than other Caribbean islands. This time, the beach (which is public) seems to be quite dirty (a lot of garbage washing up and broken glass in the sand), I am also being harassed wherever I go with my daughter by local women who want to braid her hair. This is something that I do not remember seeing the last time I was here.

This is a very nice place for a family vacation, but things are definitely deteriorating. I was shocked to see how much the attitude of the people and the quality of surroundings have changed. My family is having a nice time, but it is definitely not the property or the Aruba I remember.

  • Liked — Spacious, very close to beach, ability to use all Marriott pools in the area
  • Disliked — Villas are starting to look old and tired, staff seemed unfriendly and less than helpful

The Ocean club is the older of two Marriott Vacation Club properties, but has been refurbished to a high standard and is a lovely resort. We stayed in a two-bedroom with a kitchen. The unit was clean, up to date and freshly painted. The Ocean Club has a a lagoon-style pool and hot tub and a pool bar, which are very nice and a lot quieter than the Surf club. The Surf club has alazy river and water slide, which Ocean Club guests can use at no cost. Most folks by the Ocean Club pools were older and quieter, but I was never made to feel unwelcome with my active 4 year old. Like most families with chidlren, we spent most days next door where the action was but liked returning to a quiet oasis. Palapa reservation was hassle free. I stopped by the towel hut most days around 7:45 and was able to secure a hut by the water or one row back at no charge (even numbers are free, odd numbers are $15 per day - both are available water side).

We ate one night at the Flying Fishbone, but were not impressed with the food or service, especially for the price. Comparably priced and MUCH better on all fronts was Papamiento in Noor (about 5 minutes from the hotel). We would definitely go there again.

The Butterfly farm was a lovely distraction for an afternoon. The Aloe factory was not terribly interesting, but the aloe products in the adjacent shop were 50% cheaper than at the Marriott. Worth the trip just for that and you don't have to take the tour to access the store.

The Aruban people were lovely. The Island motto of "One Happy Island" is certainly true. People were polite, helpful and nice to be around. Of course, if I lived in paradise, my mood would be perpetually better, I am sure.

You can't go wrong with either the Ocean Club or Surf Club. The key difference is pace.

Stayed at the Marriot Ocean Club in December. Occupied a 2 bedroom unit. Adequate but needs updating. Bathroom was old. Lobby is warn out. Pool is mostly shady and quiet. Everything that is happening.... happens at the SURF CLUB. Our friends stayed at the Surf Club. GREAT pool, modern updated (since they are new) rooms. Would definetely recommend the SURF CLUB over the Ocean Club.

Spent the week of Feb 3-10 at the Ocean Club. Traveled with my wife, 16 month boy, and mother-in-law. We stayed in a one bedroom suite. We were very happy with the accomodations. Here are my major impressions of the property:

1) Ocean Club is much smaller and more intimate than the Surf Club. Also Ocean Club seems more kid friendly. It was difficult to walk arounf the pool area of the Surf Club with a baby stroller due to the large number of stairs. Ocen Club pool area is one level with no stairs and direct access to the beacn. My wife and I took the Surf Club time share tour. The rooms are quite nice but the Surf Club is too large and congested for our taste. Also, beach area at Surf Club is more congested. When the additional buildings are finished at the Surf Club it will be even more congested.

2) Room was large, updated and clean. Bedroom was large with a jacuzzi tub. Queen sized pull put sofa bed in the living room was fine. Was great to have a full kitchen and we filled up the refrigerator after a trip to Lings Supermarket.

3) Service at the Ocean Club was good. Check in was a breeze and bell men were available to help with bags and groceries later in the week. Maid service was also good.

4) Beach was beautiful. Water was calm and aqua blue. We reserved a beach hut for three days. Didn't really use it as the baby was not going to sit still on the beach.

5) People at the Ocean Club (both staff and guests) were quite friendly. Saw no instances of people fighting over beach chairs or anything like that. Lots of young kids, pre-school age. Majority of people we met were from New York Metro area or Boston.

6) We ate at Moomba Beach (average food, beautiful setting). Cool to watch the Super Bowl outside on the beach. El Gaucho (good steak, kid friendly). Sole Mare - good Italien food.

7) Adjoining Marriot Hotel has a good fitness center, casino and several restaurants. All can be used by Ocean Club guests.

In summary, we had a great time. Beautiful weather, great beach. Ocean Club is perfect for a family vacation. We will be going back soon.

Luckily we do not own a timeshare at this property!

We had exchanged with Interval International to visit this property.

The room was excellent! A One bedroom villa. Very clean, newly refurbished.

The pool & beach are extremely overcrowded. Kids running everywhere!!

We could not find a spot near the pool to sit, so we ended up on the beach every day. Lots of palapas available, if you don't need to be right near the water. But still kids everywhere. I think each family must have had at least 3 kids! And the kids were running all over, unattended for.

One night when returning from the Casino at the neighboring Marriott Stellaris at 10pm, there were 4 children in our elevator all under the age of 10 with no parents!!

This was our first trip to Aruba, absolutely great Island! We will definitely return, but not to a Marriott.

The Marriott Surf Club next door does have a better pool, than the Ocean Club. But the beach in front of the Surf Club is almost non-existant.

Food was also way overpriced. $6 for a 10 oz can of beer. $8.95 for a hot dog & fries. Coke was $2.25 per glass!! Our room had a full kitchen, so we had our own snacks & drinks from the grocery store.

  • Liked — Very Nice Room
  • Disliked — Overcrowded beach & pool, Too many kids

We stayed at the Marriott Ocean Club Jan. 8-15 with our two boys, 18 & 12. We booked a one BR villa directly through Marriott online and wonder now in retrospect if we would have gotten a better deal renting from a timeshare owner. We were entitled to daily maid service, which was great.

The property itself is really beautiful and lush as well as immaculate. The beach is gorgeous and the water is perfect for swimming and lounging. No problem getting a palapa either reserved in advance or at 7:30 in the morning.

The room was very spacious, nicely decorated and clean. The kitchen was great for breakfast and some lunches. Saved a few bucks there. We had dinner at a different fabulous (and pricey) restaurant every night. The big jacuzzi in the room was a nice bonus. Our boys shared the sofa bed, and survived.

We ate at Simply Fish the first night and enjoyed it. Had drinks/snacks at Champions Sports Bar and lunch at the pool bar was always good. Had a good massage at Mandara. Didn't like the product sales pitch after by the masseuse.

The water sports were reasonable and readily available. Tried tubing and had a blast. Jolly PIrates 1/2 day trip which was super; 1/2 day trip to DePalm Island was lots of fun and horseback riding. Found the Marriott Concierge to be aloof and not really interested in helping us much. Everyone else was friendly, helpful and nice.

Not much in the way of organized activities for teens so my boys didn't have much opportunity to meet other kids their age. It was fine because we really spent some great family time together.

First know we don't have children, and don't cook our own meals on vacation. So putting that prejudice aside, the facilities are very nice. Great pools, nice rooms, but this entire area is VERY crowded in the winter. The beach is no tropical paradise. We stayed two days in Manchebo Beach (see my review Manchebo Beach resort). That area is a quite tropical paradise.
Here you fight for pool chairs at 8 am. Huts to reserve are $10 a day, but some are available free. Again start at 8am, but can get one by 10 am.
Great for kids, there is plenty to keep them occupied. The Surf club is completing the two new towers. When they open there is NO WAY they can accommodate the larger occupancy. The two pool areas will be a mad house. But both the ocean and surf club facilities are available for either guest hotel.
We stayed for a preview vacation. Meaning we paid a very cheap rate ($500 for 5 nights) but you are subject for a 90 minute vacation sales pitch at the end of your stay. And they are very persuasive. I obviously did not purchase one, but this is an option for those who want to save money, or are actually interested in buying. Families can take advantage of one -two bedrooms, or couples into a studio (guestroom). The property is huge, so bring comfortable walking shoes. The Palm Beach area has many casinos, water sports, restaurants, and commercials tourist areas to keep you busy. But peace and quite will not be found here. Head south for that.
