My wife and I are currently staying at The Westin. She is attending a conference here this week. Before I begin let me begin this review by saying we have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, once in Europe, and reside in the Las Vegas area. We have seen the highs and lows when it comes to accommodations. Based on the price we paid for The Westin we were expecting something competitive with Mandalay Bay or Caesars in Vegas but what we got was more in line with The Excalibur or Stratosphere. The bottom line...The hotel just really felt run down. Where do I begin? Well...(1) Our room...(a) The bathroom has a single clogged sink and tub with a chipped bottom. The shower fixture without a wand has two settings that really only partially works on the pulsating setting. The floor looks nasty and the molding has a layer of dirt on it. (b) The phone buttons for various departments don't work. (c) There is free Wi-Fi but only free at snail pace. If you want the upgrade to 1.5Mbps you'll pay $10 per day (The nickel and diming never stops.) There is no receptacle to hard wire into the net. The Wi-Fi is constantly kicking me off line. There is no receptacle space available there to plug in my laptop or charger for my phone. (d) There is a mini-bar area with a coffee pot (Starbucks provided...which Was nice.) and a fridge below. The fridge is a mini-bar fridge but there is nothing in it. I called downstairs and they said they went away from that system. They said I needed to order the bottle I wanted and have it charged. The problem with that is I would need a separate bottle for each type of drink I want and each bottle runs about $50. I asked about using the fridge that was there but that would cost $5 per day to have it turned on (nickels and dimes.) (e) The maid service is iffy. If we leave the room at the wrong time we can expect to not see service until late in the afternoon. Hotels we're used to notice when you're not there and make adjustments. We've even stayed in places where the room was serviced multiple times in the day. Finally, one day we got water bottles, others we didn't. Sometimes we get coffee cup lids, sometimes we don't. There's no consistency. And, I believe I read where the tip is already added in. I see why. (f) The bed is way too soft for us but you might like that. (g) Positives on the room...Flat panel TV. Balcony. Frigid (if you like that). Plenty of room and seating. (2) Dining. (a) Stay Far Far away from the breakfast buffet. The quality falls short of the free breakfast you'll get at a Staybridge or Comfort Suites and it's a whopping $25 per person. We don't even pay that for top notch international cuisine breakfasts on the Vegas Strip. I know it's Aruba but there are other Caribbean destinations you know...And other hotels here as well. I can't believe the quality is as poor in all of them. I could justify the price if the quality was there. I realize I'm on vacation. (b) The restaurants are nice and not overly pricey. My Filet in the steak restaurant was good and the Teppanyaki restaurant was fun as usual. Stay away from the lobster though and go with the filet. Once again, it is quite good. As you might tell, I am a filet fan. I know filets. (c) The bars. The bars pour a mean drink and are consistent with Vegas prices. The problem is they close and there's only three dedicated. One is in the lobby, one in the casino and one outside. For fun it's all about outside. If you want to party past two you'll be looking elsewhere. But I think this is consistent around all of the hotels. Check it out...I just got thrown off the Wi-Fi again!!! Bottom line on the dining is you'll find better food down the street in front of The Radisson. Gianni's is to die for if you love Italian. Check out Angela on Violin. She was awesome. (3) Entertainment. (a) The Spa...Sucks. My wife has never walked away from a spa until yesterday. She said it was dirty and provided little privacy. The door to the work out room was open and the women's lockers were in a shambles. She was literally scared to use the facilities. So...Book a spa treatment elsewhere. (b) The pool is nice but not as pretty as others I've seen. The entertainer at the pool was outstanding. The beach chairs are full. (c) There is no show and the casino is about the same size as a large game room in an upscale house. The game room is small as well. I see a pool table in the lower lobby but need to find out where to get the balls. I've yet to see anybody play on it. It's tucked away from everything else so I imagine few even know about it. (4) Other notes. Service is okay but not over the top. The mosquitoes are vicious. The lower level shops are too few and really don't offer much. Not worth more than a quick glance. Two of the four elevators were down yesterday. Hey....I got kicked off the Wi-Fi again. I've been sitting at the high priced breakfast buffet now for almost an hour and never got one waiter/waitress to ask if they could get me something else after I signed the check. (5) Summation. I would have given the Westin the lowest rating but I'll be here three more days. There's always a chance they might impress me somewhere, maybe another restaurant. The Best...The drinks! AND...It is Aruba, enjoy the breezes. The Worst...Way over priced for what you get. Book elsewhere. The Radisson looks nice but there may be better. If you're squabbling over $50 per night between here and there, pay the extra. How many times are you going to vacation in Aruba?
Room Tip: Go elsewhere unless there's an incredible deal here that helps get you to Aruba.
