“Great place for vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014 via mobile

I decided to leave a review although there's so many reviews for this hotel! Briefly, the hotel is beautiful with absolutely amazing pool area and views from your room. I would give A+ to servicing staff, quality of food in Nicolas restaurant (buffet style restaurant we used almost every day), to pretty high quality of drinks and liquor in general, which is usually generic in all inclusive places in the Caribbean. We tried 2 specialty restaurants and a very happy with them, especially with Krystal. They both served good quality wines which are not served in the dining room and after dinner liqueurs. The only downside was the room... Furnishings ARE getting old and not because of the age but because of the quality of materials originally used. Rooms ARE smelly with mold, but I brought a fragranced candle with me and had it on 24/7. It was a good idea! Other than that we had a terrific time!

My husband and I just returned from our trip to Aruba along with my son and his fiancee. We were originally supposed to go to the Westin Resort as we do every year but the Westin was sold to the RIU. Anyway they honored our reservations at the Riu for our 10 day stay. We were so happy. We got to the Riu Palace and everything was taken care of.We even got the all inclusive which I didn't think we would because our original reservations were at the Westin. We were put in a suite,as was my son and his fiancee. The rooms were beautiful, the balconies were spacious. All the food you could eat, at your fingertips. We couldn't have asked for a better stay. Our housekeeper would leave these cute little animals made from towels everyday. They really try to make your stay wonderful. The only thing is that we really needed to get out of the resort to go to other restaurants that we enjoy. The buffet for breakfast and lunch was plentiful, you had your choice of 2 places to go. Dinner could be a buffet or a choice of 4 restaurants. The Japanese restaurant was the best. The Italian one...not so good. But I would give the Riu in Aruba a great rating..It was a wonderful relaxing vacation.

Room Tip: Ask for a bed topper because the beds are rock hard. Also the lower the room the noisier

We were relocated from the Westin to the Riu (at no additional cost) after it was bought. We were a little worried about coming to the Riu after reading the reviews, but overall, we were pleasantly surprised and very glad we did not cancel our trip.

We were in the B building, and were pleased with the room. The hallways had some strange smells from cleaning agents used, but they didn't come through to our room, so it wasn't a big deal. Although the mattress was firm, we were able to sleep well. I know you can request a mattress topper--we didn't, but my parents did and were put on a waiting list and never received them. My only complaint about the room was that it was not a true king sized bed--it was two doubles. Ours were not even connected with a fitted, so it was a little awkward.

We did request a crib for our 6 month old daughter, and weren't happy with the quality. It didn't seem to sturdy, had a very soft mattress, and a loose flat sheet folded over the mattress (SIDS hazard). I had been forewarned ahead of time, so I actually arranged to rent to rent a crib from Aruba Crib Rentals and was glad I did. Check them out if you're bringing a baby!

The pool area was great, but did get very crowded, particularly in the early afternoon. Drinks at the bar were delicious, and the pool temperature was lovely. The beach is wonderful, and getting a beach hut was no big deal--especially now that all of the Westin palapas belong to the Riu and are available now.

The food was mediocre. We didn't pay for all-inclusive and got it for free when the reservation was relocated. Breakfast was great. Lunch was just so-so, but we love Bugaloe--on the dock between the Riu and the Radisson, so we went there most days. The dinner buffet had lots of options, but wasn't great. We didn't try the specialty restaurants, because we had restaurants we wanted to visit and try (we recommend Papillion, Old Man and the Sea).

If you were relocated and not sure whether or not to keep your travel plans--go! You won't regret it.

Room Tip: Request a room in the A or B tower (A is the main building with views of the ocean--B has partial oc...

This is a great place for a vacation. The food was absolutely wonderful. The taste and quality was beyond criticism and the variety was unequaled. The specialty restaurant was also fine.
Best for friends and family vacation.

Here is an example of "you get WAY more than you pay for". We were relocated to the Riu Palace when they bought and shut down the Westin for renovations. This trip was completely free, as we originally booked on Starwood points and were given the full all-inclusive experience at no additional cost.

Overall, we were EXTREMELY happy. We had a Jr Suite w/partial ocean view on the 4th floor of building B. This is the "basic" room they offer. Great view of the pool and ocean. What they consider a king size bed is 2 doubles pushed together with one fitted sheet over both. Beds are very firm, but that is what we have at home also, so we slept really well every night. Small sitting area, small balcony with sliding glass door, nice bathroom, outstanding shower. Minibar filled w beer, soda and water. Liquor dispenser on the wall w Smirnoff vodka, Bacardi rum, Johnnie Walker Red and 1 other. AC worked very well...in fact it was downright frosty sometimes and we had to turn down the air. No musty or moldy smell that others have complained about. Our only complaint about the room was the extremely spotty wifi. It seemed to come and go at will. We simply went to the lobby a couple times a day to check email, Facebook, etc.

Breakfast and lunch buffets were great. Dinner was just ok. You need to make reservations for the a la carte restaurants before 11am. We looked at the menus and frankly, were unimpressed. Since we were getting the all-inclusive for free, we decided to spend some of our "house money" to go out for dinner most nights. There are so many highly recommended restaurants in Aruba that we would rather go out than have average (albeit free) buffet food. Our experience is that food at AI resorts is never truly gourmet anyway, so we were satisfied.

Drinks were small but very tasty and plentiful. Yes, they serve them in small plastic cups and are not loaded with alcohol, but frankly that kept us from drinking too much too fast. Some hard core guests brought their own large insulated cups, but to me, that's just overkill. Bar staff and the bellmen were awesome. The service quality from the wait staff in the restaurants was very spotty. Some great and friendly and some dismissive and rude. We just didn't let it bother us, though. My wife kept reminding me this was all free!!!

Pool area beautiful. Beach very nice and clean. Sand gets incredibly soft the closer you get to the amazing sea water. Casino cramped and unbelievably smoky. After walking through the casino on our first night, we had ZERO desire to go back to gamble (and I am a big Vegas lover).

Overall, we had a great time. We would happily return to another Riu resort based on this experience.

This is a great place for a vacation. The food was absolutely wonderful. The taste and quality was beyond criticism and the variety was unequaled. The speciaalty resturants were also fine. Dessert was ok.

Rooms were spacious, clean and most had great views. Service was outstanding.

If I had one criticism, it would be that the number of resort activities were limited including water sports, floats, and entertainment, especially at night.

On the downside, is that the concierge was very limited. That included language and understanding what we were looking for. Depalms tours does have a desk there, and they are helpful. But they do not help with tours that are not theirs.

Room Tip: the partial ocean views were worth it.

This hotel is very good. The food is excellent (multiple choices and plentiful), the drinks are not watered and flow continuously, and the staff impeccable - friendly and always courteous. A great vacation spot!

Room Tip: Floors 9 & 10 - large balcony (as opposed to a Juliet). 925/924/926
