We went to the Riu from 4/14-4/21/08 for our honeymoon. We chose Riu because we stayed at their resort in Mexico and were very pleased with that trip.
Check in was a breeze and we were pleased with our room (706~Main Tower), with the exception of the service/guest elevator being outside of our door. It did get noisy at times, but the convenience was worth it (not to mention the views). Our balcony was huge and partially shaded which was perfect for late afternoon reading.
Instead of going on and on about EVERYTHING, I am just going to focus on what stood out on our trip.
We did not eat at any of the specialty restaurants, as we left the resort for dinner almost every night. The buffets are serviceable for lunch and dinner. Madame Jannettes is a must on your trip; I recommend it more highly than El Gaucho which was the most recommended to us. If you go to "MJ's" try and get Sergio and/or Omar to serve you ~ Fantastic! Gilligans at the Radisson is also a great place to eat within walking distance. In town we ate at the Paddock Cafe (the one with the cow on top) the service was very slow, but the food was decent and the beer (American) was cold.
Beach/Pool ~ We are more “pool people” and quite honestly the times we did venture to the beach, we were sandblasted, so we stuck to the pool. The best thing we did ALL week was chose the chaises right next to the towel hut. Not only did they shield the wind a bit, we got sun late into the afternoon and the kids that work there are quite comical and VERY Accommodating! Not to mention the fabulous people watching!! Carlos at the pool bar is also worthy of a good tip.
Casino ~ we did quite well at the casino, although later at night it gets extremely crowded. We chose to play in the late afternoons between sunning and dinner and that’s when we won the most. We also had some luck at the Seaport Casino in town.
If you are there to totally relax, try a massage at the Intermezzo Spa next door at the Westin. It was reasonable and very professional. The cabs into town from the Riu are $10 daily and $12 on Sundays, but it is a necessary evil ~ there is no walking ~ too far. The music by the pool was a huge improvement over the Riu in Mexico (they had none). It was one of the things I was wary of. I think it was just a kid, his IPOD and speakers, but very festive and appropriate.
If you are looking for "tropical" Riu is probably not for you.... The Radisson and the low-rise resorts have more of that feel to them. In fact, I think that is where we are headed when we go back, but that is not to disparage the Riu, just to experience something different.
Overall we had a wonderful trip and did not do much but sleep, eat, drink and sun, but that's what a honeymoon is all about!
