My boyfriend and I went to Aruba in May 2006 for 9 days and 8 nights. We had a fabulous time there. Everyone is extremely nice there. I almost didn't want to come back.
Hotel -
We stayed at the Marriott Stellaris Hotel and enjoyed our stay. The bathrooms are hugeeeeee! Three or four people can do jumping jacks in the bathroom at the same time confortably. That's how much space there is in the bathroom. We were on the third floor with the garden view although we can actually see the beach from where we were. One night there was even a fireworks show and we saw the whole thing from our balcony. So nice! We never had to reserve a palapa, there was always one available when we were at the beach. At the hotel there was a big casino (I believe this one is the biggest one on the island).
Transportation -
We took the cabs sometimes, but we mostly took the bus. The bus is just right outside of the hotel. It's $2 roundrip per person, but more if it is on a Sunday. You probably wouldn't want to take it on Sunday anyway because most shopping stores close on Sunday, and supermarkets close early on Sunday. Also buses only come once an hour on Sunday. Other days it comes every 20-30 minutes. The buses are very convenient and cheap. There is also a van that stops at the bus stops also and it looks like a taxi but it says bus on it. You can take that also (only $1 each way) but they do not honor transfer tickets. Mostly locals take this van, but it stops at all the same stops the buses do.
Activities -
For the wave runners and parasailing I just used the people right outside of the hotel on the beach. The people running these water activities are friendly (but so is everyone we've met in Aruba - so nice!). For snorkeling we used DePalm Tours - Passport to Paradise. We loved it! I don't even know how to swim (I am still practicing) and if I could do it, you could do it. For the tour around the island, we used ABC tours. Our tour guide was real friendly, and gave us a full day tour of the island. Warning though, you are going to get real dirty after this tour, and the roads are a bit rough and bumpy because you get off the road to look at most of the sites. I am only 28 and in good health, but I was so beat the next day. I was exhausted! I recommend it though because it's very informative and you see some wonderful sites.
Supermarket -
We took the bus to Kong Hing supermarket. It's cheap to get drinks, food and fruit there and just stock up your fridge in the hotel. I was a bit disappointed though in the fruit selection. I am a fruit fanatic and I am used to seeing such fresh fruit back in nyc that I had high expectations. The fruit was not as fresh. I took the best ones though because I have to have fruit.
Restaurants -
Everything is so expensive (it's okay you are on vacation!) but delicious! We ate a lot of seafood. The portions are huge too so a lot of times I do not have enough room in my stomach for dessert. We tried almost all the restaurants that were recommended by reviewers on this website and here are my top recommendations. I loved Flying Fishbones (romantic), Salt and Pepper, Driftwood, Madame Jeanette (romantic), Le Petit Cafe and Simply Fish (romantic). Everywhere the dress code is casual.
Souveniers -
Go downtown to buy your souvenirs and shop around. It's better to buy in bulk and you will definitely get a good deal that way. Most store owners will lower the price if you buy in bulk.
Calling -
We went to Internet Planet by the Renaissance (downtown). They charge only $0.25/minute to make a phone call to the U.S. Not bad!
