I just got back yesterday from a wonderful week at the Marriott Aruba Resort and Stellaris Casino. The grounds are beautiful, the people are very nice/helpful, and the whole week felt like being at a comfortable home away from home. I'm already planning a second trip to this hotel in the next year.
Here are a couple tips for people on their way to this hotel:
--- If you can...BECOME A MARRIOTT MEMBER...this is great for a couple reasons, but mostly because you get free wifi for 6 devices everywhere! Even by the pools and on the beach. It was great to sit with my feet in the ocean and my iPad in my lap. If you are not a member I think you have to pay or only have wifi in the lobby.
--- Food and drinks at the hotel was actually very good for American style food and reasonably priced. It also helped that they serve you around the pools and even on the beach. Also it was nice to just charge it to the room. This way we didn't have to worry about bringing money and valuables out of our room.
--- Make sure to go down early for a hut on the beach in the mornings. They start giving them out at 7am and at 630am I was already 7 or 8th in line. It was totally worth getting up early though, the huts are a necessity on the beach. You can also rent a cabana around the adult pool which was nice too. It made us feel like royalty. There are 4 pools you can access at the Marriott hotels and the two closest to the Resort were my favorite. The others were still pretty, but more family oriented though.
--- I was told by the cab driver not to drink the faucet water at the hotel because they add chlorine, but I did find that there were cold water stations all around the hotel. I just bought a water bottle on the first day and filled it up 20 times during the week. There are even a couple water stations right on the beach which were VERY helpful on the hot days.
--- Our room didn't have the best view possible, but there were no more ocean or pool view rooms even left when we booked this trip. It would have been nice to have a view, but this didn't bother us overall. It's just something to think about when you are about to spend the extra money on the premium ocean view...though I'm sure it's amazing. :)
--- The hotel is perfectly placed towards the end of the highrise hotel strip. So it's not too busy on the beach and still within walking distance to everything. It wasn't until the end of our trip that we walked down on the 'street side' of the hotels and found a large number of stores and restaurants. It would have been nice to spend more time there, but we would walk on the beautiful beach and didn't even know there was bowling, rock climbing walls, and a movie theater just on the other side of the hotels. We did take a cab downtown one day, but it was nothing special.
--- Also if you like the ocean, there was a great snorkeling place right in front of this hotel on the beach I would recommend. We did a three hour boat ride which takes you to three locations and served lunch and all the drinks you can down. Great experience.
