The hotel was terrific. I was concerned about the renovations, but you maybe heard some noise in the distance while you were at the beach, but they just started the North Tower rooms. Everyone stays in the new rooms, which are delightful. Great AC, nice rooms. Suprised with Plasma TVs they dont have HD though. The lobby is very nice. We ate at Ruth's Chris and their service is a 10! Everyone is very friendly and very very helpful. Well, everyone but Elizabeth at the towel/palapa hut. It amazes me how you can only reserve three days worth, but the same family was able to get the front row hut for 6 days straight? Hmmm. I am smelling a conspiracy or some heavy tipping. We tried...didn't work well. There is no problem getting a palapa at all, but if you want the front row (2nd was fine with me!) you have to do some majory (probably $50 or more) tipping....and Elizabeth is brutal to reserve with. Wait until her day off!!!! The rooms and beds were comfy! I will continue to return over and over.
I read another reviewer. There did seem to be a few more families with kids. Kind of annoying children that did seem to dominate the pool. Well behaved, but I think they need to have an "adult" swim hour after 3 or 4 pm or something. Some people were nuts reserving chairs at the pool at 6:30 in the morning. There were plenty to choose from.
The beach is wonderful, the water warm, the pool is nice, great service on the beach. I have no idea why people complain. The marriott is the best hotel on the island. It is not a 5 star resort, I would say a 4 star, but come on folks....on "One Happy Island", there is no such thing as a 5 star resort. The Marriott is better than the Westing (former Wyndam), Radison, the god awful RIU which just opened, the Hyatt, and certainly the Holiday Inn. The Marriott Timeshares (Surf Club) is where all the kids are. Stay far away from those if you dont want kids.
There were a lot of middle aged couples. Trust me, if you are 10-20 pounds overweight, you will probably feel svelte there. This is not a hotel with pretentious buff or anorexic 21 year olds. It is an adult resort with nice people...mostly from NY, NJ or Boston. Being from Chicago, I felt like the only midwesterner.
The crowd seemed very couple oriented. I saw 1 or 2 gay couples, which was nice to see. Otherwise, married (for 15-20 years!) couples enjoying the beach.
Stay there...but it is pricey! Also, take a chance on room service. if it is not delivered in 45 minutes, it is free. Ours took 55 minutes (which I didnt care)....but it was free!!!!!
