“Aruba vacation (first time)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Heard so many good things about Aruba from friends we decided to try it by staying in a luxury hotel. The Marriott Resort was very clean and the staff was always polite. Food and drinks are on the expensive side but you expect that from a luxury hotel. We heard that there was some noise from the JW Marriott being built next door but we never heard anything. The excercise room is very well appointed with a good assortment of weight and cardio machines. We ate at the buffet one night at the hotel because it was raining and found the food to be very good. Casino had enough tables and machines for everyone.

Room Tip: Had an room overlooking the adult pool. Very quiet.

This was our second stay at the Marriott stellaris. This time we used our marriott points for the trip. This Marriott doesn't upgrade for Marriott elites. We were first given a room on the third floor close to the elevator overlooking the adult pool and air conditioning units. Not good. It was very noisy at night and we could smell cigarette one from the casino. The smell was very strong at night. We changed our room the second day. Lanissa at the front desk was very nice and helpfull. Also thank you Suzy! This time the huts on the beach were much easier to reserve. We mostly ate on the property, expensive but good. One of my only complaints about the stellaris was their happy hour drink prices at the pool. The price really increased in the last two yrs defiantly not a two for one! Also sitting at the bar in the pool we noticed the bartenders put just one shot of alcohol per two drinks in the frozen drinks. Very weak drinks and definitely not worth $14 for two. Also we liked the bar on the beachside better, the pool waitress was terrible, no personality and we never saw her. Overall though we like this Marriott just don't expect the same marriott experience you would get in the us.

This was our forth trip to Aruba.........We stayed at the Marriott the first week in July 2012. We only left the property once, to go for dinner. Totally relaxing vacation, no car, no rushing around. Tradewinds is the way to go.......we had breakfast and lunch there everyday. A few times we even cancelled dinner reservations because the choices in the Tradewinds lounge were too good to pass up. They serve samplings of all the restaurants on the property and a good variety of wine, champagne, etc.

There were always beach huts available, since the Tradewinds has their own section. We did encounter a crowd at the adult pool, but spoke to one of the employees, who always managed to clear off a couple of abandoned chairs for us. As far as the casino, I cannot complain....first night there, a slot machine paid for our trip!!

My only complaint was the spa. Extremely disappointed with the whole experience. Wrote about my experience on the comment card for the hotel, but never received a response. Would never book another treatment there, but would definitely return to the Marriott.

As a side note, we spoke to someone staying at the Hyatt (our usual choice which we stayed on two previous occasions). They were totally disappointed. Said the beach was overcrowded, the staff was rude, and the Regency Club food was lacking in variety and taste.
We decided to try the Marriott this time as the price was considerable less expensive.....so happy we did.

Stayed there for a week in mid December. The facility was very nice.

CHECK IN

. When you arrive, a bellman takes your luggage from the cab (a $25 rides from the airport) and stays with it until he delivers it to your room. There were five at the check in desk so check in was quick.

THE ROOM

Good sized. Nice bathroom , large walk-in closet with a safe and a flat screen T V with plenty of programming that you will recognize. Quite a large balcony with a small table and 2 chairs.

THE BEACH

Of course, that is why you are there and it is a nice one.. Plenty of palapas for shade but you have to line up at 4pm or 7am to reserve one or pay $20/day (The line starts a little after 3 and you stand there for 1 hour. Not my idea of how to spend a vacation). To their credit, the" free ones" are closely monitored and if unoccupied for 2 hours, are released to anybody who wants one. As the last property on the beach, there is plenty of beach to walk along - lots to look at (other properties, eateries, bars, etc).

THE POOLS

There are 2: the main pool is beautifully sculptured with a waterfall and seating is plentiful. There is a recently opened adult pool, much smaller and you have to play the "towel game" to get lounges in the shade. Hate that.

SOME TIPS

1) Join the Marriot Rewards Club (free) before you go and give them your number at check in. You will get free in-room ethernet (wired) internet service and $50 credit for telephone calls. I am told that this is good for about a 10 minute call to the States.

2) All of the food on the island is terribly expensive, especially in the hotel (as expected). You can have breakfast in the lobby cafe for about $6 for a bagel, cream cheese and a cup of coffee. You can pay $20 for an "American Breakfast" in the restaurant. We walked along the building line (5 minutes) to a restaurant called Hadicurariaruba where we had a full breakfast for $12 right on the beach. Their lunches and dinners are well priced too and quite good.

3) The hotel is a good walk from the shopping/restaurant area.. You can walk along the roadway in front of the hotel (20 minutes and only during the daylight) or you can follow the building lines on the beach side and walk through the Holiday Inn Hotel (10 minutes). Bring a small flashlight at night as few areas are not well lit. The walk is very safe as there are always people about.

As I said earlier... very nice!

This probably is the most upscale of the hotels in Aruba .
Most of the rooms including the very last one give good ocean views , so there is really no bad room .
The pool areas , lobby , restaurants, service are all excellent .
The only con is that it is a little further from the strip of restaurants in the Hotel zone .
This being the last hotel on the strip , takes about 20 minutes to walk to the action area .

We just got back after spending 6 days at the Aruba Marriott Resort. There were 5 of us traveling (my wife and I and 3 adult daughters 21 - 26) and we had 2 rooms on the Tradewinds Floor which is their version of a concierge level. Overall it was a pretty good hotel experience, however there were things missing. The Tradewinds floor was a good choice. They have a lounge offering breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, evening hors d'oeuvre's and open bar in in the evenings. They offer beer and soft drinks all day. the whole family used this lounge extensively. The service in at the Tradewinds was excellent, check in in was smooth and easy. The concierge was helpful and kind. We are used to staying at very high end hotels in the Caribean and the service at the Tradewinds was as good as it gets.
The rooms on the Tradewinds floor were very nice, comfortable beds, enough space for the 3 girls in a room. The bathrooms are ok. Housekeeping service was top notch, and really most of the service at the hotel was excellent.
The reason for the average rating is the public areas of the resort. The Lobby bar doesn't have music in the evenings, the Gym is antiquated, with equipment I haven't seen in 20 years, the adults only pool is difficult to get a seat at, the other pool is overcrowded, the hot tub is not hot and seemed a bit dirty and the beach area is extremely crowded. The beach/ocean was a big dissappointment, the water was cloudy, not like regular Caribean water, and had debris that you would step on, maybe a can or plastic bottle or some other trash. This is the only time I have ever experienced this in the ocean and if you wakked the beach and went into the water elsewhere it did not seem as bad.
The service at the beach was pretty good.
Overall we had a nice time and they certainly try hard at the Marriott Aruba Resort, but the facility was just lacking a bit.
