My wife Jean and I recently stayed at the Bucuti from April 26th to May 6th. We stayed in the Tara Suites in Room 332.
Overall, the Bucuti was undoubtedly one of the nicest places we've ever stayed.
First and foremost, the room was tastefully appointed, clean and up-to-date. The bed was actually comfortable! Our view from our balcony over the beachfront was superb.
The grounds of the resort are very well kept. The pool is modern and clean and deck area around the pool recently renovated.
But it is the section of Eagle Beach where the Bucuti is located that is the star of this show. This is absolutely one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen anywhere. And there are ample palapas to provide shade in which to enjoy the beautiful beach. You can reserve palapas by leaving beach towels on them, but we never went without a palapa no matter what time of day we went down to the beach - this made the whole stay relaxing and extremely enjoyable.
The staff at the Bucuti is very responsive and good humored. We had no problems resolving any questions.
There was a nice continental breakfast provided in the ground floor dining room of our building which made a fine start to our day. There is also an onsite restaurant, the Pirates' Nest, which was excellent. We ate lunch and dinner there several times and were pleased with the food and service. We don't drink, so we can't give any opinion about the bar, but it seemed well-frequented. The Bucuti provides a water-cooler near the bar that dispenses much appreciated water freely throughout the day.
There is a handy gift-shop on the premises with a reasonable selection of beverages, snacks and touristy items.
We were very happy with our entire stay at the Bucuti and would recommend it without reservation. It's quiet. There's no poolside drinking contests or late-night disco music. That in and of itself makes the stay worth it.
We brought our laptop and purchased a block of Wi-Fi time in our room. Nice, respectable download speeds, but make sure you know how to access an alternative wireless network or that your laptop is set up to do it automatically before you go. The Bucuti also has a little computer room in the main lobby, next to the entrance to the gift shop, where you can rent Internet access on their computers.
Within a five-minute walk of the Bucuti, we frequented a Subway, a Dunkin' Donuts, a resaurant named Pizza Bob's and the Alhambra casino. Pizza Bob's was great - try the vegetable linguine.
Moving further afield, we used the services of the Tropic car rental company. The owner, a very nice man named Hans, delivered our Toyota Yaris to the Bucuti and provided some very handy Aruban driving tips. After a couple of tense opening journeys, Aruban traffic and rotaries proved very easy to navigate, but pay attention! Aruban drivers are bold about passing. Anyway, Tropic car rental was a great choice for us. We rented the car for seven of our ten days at the Bucuti and the charge was only $175.
Two of our favorite stops were the Alto Vista chapel and the California Lighthouse - very beautiful scenery. Driving to both was easy. With a standard road vehicle, though, you can't safely go past the Alto Vista chapel on to the dirt roads, which we understand provide access to some other nice spots.
After the beach at the Bucuti itself, our favorite beach was Baby Beach, on the southern end of the island. We spent two full days snorkeling and sun-bathing there. (We were glad we followed the advice to go cautiously with the sunbathing. The Aruban sun burns quickly and severely.) We rented a sunshade and two beach chairs each day at Baby Beach for a total of $47 each day. We felt this was expensive, but without the shade, we wouldn't have enjoyed our days there so much. The snorkeling was fun - we didn't rent snorkeling gear as we had our own. The view at Baby Beach is simultaneously beautiful and unusual - there is a huge oil refinery directly to the north.
We ate at the Flying Fishbone in Savaneta, the Salt and Pepper in the high rise section (3 times!), and Iguana Joe's in Oranjestaad. All our meals were fine. The Flying Fishbone was fun because we sat almost in the water! (Make a reservation if you want a waterfront seat.)
All in all, our first time in Aruba was a ball. We plan to return. And we are hopeful we will be able to book our return stay at The Bucuti.
