We just got back from our second stay at the Renaissance. We stayed 6 nights/ 7 days. I booked on-line with the Paradise by Marriott website directly because they were running a special for a free night and $100.00 food and beverage credit. I booked my flight from RDU seperate and flight and room cost $2100.00 I did not get insurance because I booked directly with each company and could change flight if needed and cancel the room within 24 hours.
When we arrived in Aruba I picked up a rented cell-phone from Aruba fast phones. Service was great. $50.00/ week 60 min to US included. There is also a Setar phones place in the airport that may offer cheaper rates because I noticed coupons in the airport... I have a Verizon phone and could receive calls from the US but couldn't dial out to the US.
We took a cab to the Ren because I hate riding the Depalm transport bus. Cab was $13. Depalm is $15. each way and you don't have to wait for the bus to fill up...
We arrived at the Ren and Bell-man welcomed us and helped with bags. Check-in was great and fast (the Marina tower this time- -Ocean suites last visit) I asked if an upgrade was available because we had booked a cheap standard resort room and we were upgraded to an island room that was a HUGE corner room for $20.00 per night. WELL WORTH IT! Definately ask and also ask for a high floor! We had an island view (of the city) We thought this was very nice but did get noisy on Fri and Sat night because people in Aruba drive fast! We had an ocean front suite in the Ocean tower last time that was more quiet but the Marina was more fun. Depends what you are looking for in your vacation. Our room was always very clean and we had turn down service every night.
Walking to the Ocean suites takes only a few minutes and the pools there and the one at the Marina were great. Bars as well. Service was always top-notch. Tip well to start and they will remember and treat you extra special. We did not want the All-inclusive plan because it would have been $1800. more. We didn't spend $1800.00 in Aruba on food and drink and we did a lot of both. Besides if you tip well, lots of what we ordered ended up not showing up on our bill (I think they add it to people that do get the A-I plan!) We did not prefer the restaurants at the reosrt anyway... LG Smith was great (but VERY slow service) Aquarious was okay but over priced. Breakfast outside at the Ocean suites was very good. Food and service on the private island at Papagaya were always very good. (They need to improve their mixed drinks/ frozen drinks menu) Don Carlos across the street was just okay with okay service.
Eating off the resort is always fabulous and usually MUCH cheaper. Our favorites are Iguana Joes (a short walk) and El Gauchos (also a short walk behind the resort) Iguana Joes have awesome drinks and food for VERY low prices. Cheaper than Chilis in the US. El Gauchos is the BEST steak you'll ever eat. Huge portions of food and fair prices. Untouchable experience.. We also went to the low rise section to the Bucuti resort to the Pirates nest bar and lsitened to Lee Connor play steel drums while we drank the best 50% off drinks (while he plays 5-7pm 9-11pm except Thurs) on the island! He was wonderful to listen to a very nice guy. We then ate there beachfront at the Pirates nest exceptional seafood at fair prices, great service. The Bucuti beach area is truly beautiful! I recom the trip there to listen to the steel drums!
Last but not least the private island.....what can I say ......true paradise! There is NOTHING like it in Aruba! So beautiful and relaxing.. You can lay in the shade or the sun many chairs and hammocks in both. You can snorkel and see huge parrot and angel fish. Flounder, puffers and so much more. You can float lazily in the ocean that is protected by a rock jetty that keeps it calm. You can play tennis or work out in the gym on the island. The sonkeling and calm water provides endless safe fun for the kids and there is even a floating dock to jump off of and kayaks to rent. You can feed the iguanas and flamingos or get a massage in the private hut over the water.....This is to DIE for and HIGHLY recommended!!! When you arrive at the island you can see fish all around the dock area and many puffers swim close to shore all day and we even saw an octopus close to the dock. You can decide family side or adult only side. Very nice either way. The adult side is tops optional but it is by no means a nudist camp. We only saw one person topless the week we were there.. You can see airplanes but didn't hear them as some people have reported...
We did a snorkel sail one morning with Depalm it was very nice and not crowded that day we had a great catered lunch on the boat. We did a sunset sail with Jethro on the Octopus and I highly recom that because it's very personal service fewer people go He also does a snorkel sail which I wish I had done because I prefer the less commercial excursions.
We rented a jeep 3 days and that was an absolute blast. What an adventure it is to find the natural pool. We drove all over the island and snokeled at baby beach and from the shore at Boca Catalina. Baby beach was nice but I actually preferred Boca Catalina. We put rice crispies in a water bottle whenever we went snorkeling and poked holes in the top the rice crispies would come out and the fish would swarm. This was lots of fun and we got many great pictures.
The casinos at the Ren were fun. We broke even. Because it's downtown, lots of locals go to the 2 Ren casinos so it's often hard to get a spot at a machine or a table. It's fun to watch them play but going down to the high/low rise seciton is also fun, so I definately recom renting a car/ jeep. Shopping at the Flea market for souveniers is good. We found cheaper prices at some of the shops on the road BEHIND the hotel because they don't get as many cruise people shopping. There is a grocery back there Kong Hing or something like that where we bought beer and snacks and put in a collapsable cooler for jeep trips and the private island.
Cruise ships come in 4 to 5 days a week so streets and excursions can get crowded then..plan accordingly with excursions. Going to the private island those days was best or do snorkel cruises with the smaller companies.... Shops are closed Sundays. Aruba is a GREAT, island very safe with no pushy merchants.
I hope this helps..
By the way Weather.com called for rain EVERYDAY while we were there but we never saw a single sprinkle all week. Have fun and wear sunblock!
