“Not quite luxury but nice nonetheless”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

A friend and I stayed at the Renaissance for her birthday and we were wowed originally by the valet entrance and the helpful bellman. Truly, the only downside of the hotel is the bathrooms, as they do need some work. The rooftop pool was nice, particulary at night and you are in walking distance to quite a few restaurants and the bus station. Access via boat to the private island was an excellent touch, as we enjoyed escaping away to sunbathe with the flamingos. I would stay again if I found a deal, as the service was exceptional.

By far one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed at. The only downfall is if you stay at the marina hotel you have no beach, your best bet is to stay at the ocean suites. Of the two locations ocean suites accomodates families. You can take the boat, about 10 minutes from either hotel to the private island beach. The beach is beautiful. The big difference that I found with this hotel compared to the hotels at the north end of the island, Marriot, Westin and so on, is that those beaches were very crowded. At the Renaissance there was never line ups, always beach chairs, no shoulder to shoulder. All I can say about all the staff is that they were amazing, absoIutely amazing. The rooms were very clean. The food was very good yet they could use one or two more restaurants. If you want all of the watersports you can take an $11.00 cab ride from the Renaissance to the north end of the island. I highly recommend this location to anyone. No hotel that you visit is 100% but the Renaissance is damn close. Not alot I can find wrong.

Room Tip: Oceanview by far

My husband and I stayed at the Renaissance between Christmas and New Years 2012. The hotel is located right in downtown, which is convenient for the shopping and getting to try some great local restaurants. Its about a 15 min taxi ride up to Palm Beach, where the newer high rise hotels are located. The hotel lobby itself is very impressive, as it has recently be redone. A river runs through the lower lobby where the boat picks you up and takes you to the private beach island. The lower lobby is also connected to various stores and Starbucks. You can get free wi-fi in the hotel lobby and at Starbucks, but once everyone is using it, its really slow. We were there during peak season, so it is was especially crowded. The concierge was very helpful in booking reservations for restaurants and excursions for us. But once again, it could be a long wait because there was only one person and there was always a line.

The rooms were nice, but the bathroom tubs are definitely in need of a replacement. They look like they were the original tubs from when the property was built. I am not quite sure why they didn't replace them when the rooms had been redone. Also, it took us three times before we actually got a room that didn't have any issues. The first had soaking wet carpet in front of the bathroom and in the hall and the second had a completely broken shower curtain rod which had fallen out of the wall. Our room was fine, but the A/C didn't seem to be working all that well, and there was a damp, musty smell to the room on occasion (which you got used to once you were in the room for a while).

My other big complaint is related to the food at Blue. The food was HORRIBLE. If I were Marriott, I would be embarrassed by the food presented. While the ambiance is "cool" and "chic" since its part of the pool, lobby and bar scene at the hotel, that is all this restaurant had going for them. The food is absolutely horrible and some of the items are overpriced. They serve it in bento boxes to try to capture the "chic" aspect, but when you open the cover, the presentation is so awful and the food is even worse. We ordered twice from there (only for lunch thankfully), since we were staying at the hotel and hoped the first time was just a fluke, but unfortunately it was not. We got the bubu platter for lunch that consisted of bland fried shrimp, meatless ribs, crab cakes that tasted more like curried veggie patties and teriyaki beef skewers (which were okay but that is relatively speaking). We then decided to try the tapas menu a couple days later while hanging out at the pool and ordered egg rolls and chicken empanadas. Both looked like they were pulled right out of a frozen food box and they tasted just plain awful. If you are staying at the Renaissance, definitely pass on this place, there are much better options to choose from at the hotel and on the island. We didn't do the all inclusive here because it was a total waste of money at $170/person (unless you drink 10-15 drinks a day) and we didn't want to get stuck eating at only the hotel's restaurants. There is fabulous local restaurants to try around the island (see my other reviews). We did do the breakfast all you can eat at $15/person for three days - that was worth it (mainly because they served champagne).

The private island was excellent - we hung out on Flamingo Beach, which was full of flamingos and iguanas. The water was beautiful and calm - we rented two floats and hung out in the water all day. The adult infinity pool was also great and that is where we spent a lot of our time. We went over to the Suites pool once since it had a swim up bar. The pool was nice and much larger, but it was a lot more crowded. I would recommend adding the swim up bar concept to the adult pool...not sure why it was only available at the family friendly pool.

Overall, there are some issues with the hotel, but I would recommend staying here if its your first time in Aruba. We ended up using Marriott points, but if I had been paying, I think I would have been more upset with the issues. If we were to go back to the Aruba, we would probably look at staying in the low-rise hotels area which is in between downtown and the high rise hotels.

Service was very good at this hotel, the reception desk was very friendly and helpful. The resort offers alot in that you are able to utilize all the amenities of both hotels. For kids, the ocean suites offers pool and beach and the Renaissance island is really nice. As with everything though, you may have a tough time finding seats if you don't arrive early. Snorkeling is very good at the Renaissance island. Nice outdoor shopping mall and many restaurant choices within walking distance. The casino was very nice, health club was decent, preferred this location to Palm Beach area as we split our time between the 2.

I Just got back and stayed at the Ocean Suites area. The First thing people need to know is that every room will start renovations in 2014 which is very much needed. The reason I Mention this first is that most of the negative things about the hotel is due to it not being up to par Such as outdated CRT TV'S in every room & Peeling wallpaper , and chipped tiles in many rooms. Being I had the opportuninty to see a sample of how the rooms will look in 2014 ,I Can tell you these things are going to be updated with LCD TV'S, New Royal blue color schemes and a silver/ white black counter tops with new funiture! So If your thinking of staying here, I'd wait till winter time 2014. With that said, people should also know the renaisance is divided with the ocean suites being the family friendly hotel having the beach with pools, but you also have Kids running around constanstanty. So unless you have a family with kids I Would recommend staying across the way at the Marina Hotel.
With those two cons out of the way the hotel itself is only a block away from the fabulous mall with numerous stores and restaurants with One of the 2 casinos also in the mall area.
The staff was very friendly and courteous. As far as Wifi , Only the Lobby area has access to Free internet while in room acesss you must use wired internet with router and cost is $70 /week for 1 Mbps down / .5 mbps up. far from the fastest access for such high fees but if your just using email and web brosing it will be fine. Overall the hotel is fine for an overall fun time with kids.

Room Tip: Wait Till renovations done in 2014!

We love the Renaissance and its whole property. Their island for guests is tops ! Lots of sites- 3 beaches, restaurant, bar, lounges, iguanas, flamingos, parrots, and more !
Snorkling is great. All this is a free 10 minute boat ride from your Renaissance Suite.
You can walk or shuttle to town area & get some grub, restaurants, pharmacy or Supermercado items & carry back to your room. Harborside shops have pizza, bars, & local shops.
Pool at Renaissance is a 'Lazy River' style & one can swim up to a water bar in the pool !
What's not to love at this tropical delight !
Brings tons of sun lotions for their Hot Sunny Weather.
This Renaissance is not part of Marriott Hotels (only in U.S.). This is independent. Wish it was !

Room Tip: Room choices - Some face the pool; Some face the town, some face side area of the Harborside Casino...
