Just got back from 10 days on the Happy Island and figured it was worth doing a trip report with the summer season in full swing. We left Thursday June 26 with my 17 year old son and arrived on schedule via US Air – This alone is worthy of noting as I can’t recall ever getting to a destination on time via US Scare! We stayed Thursday and Friday at the Renaissance Suites which I have to say is a GREAT PLACE for families, especially having full use of their private island. After checking in and having a swim, we dressed for dinner and walked over to Driftwood for dinner – I’ve seen mixed reports for this restaurant but we decided to give it a shot. Having been to Aruba 3 times before, I understand the different levels of service and really don’t get too excited about waiting as it’s really all about the food.
After ordering drinks and an appetizer, we were ready to order dinner but the waiter left us THREE TIMES in the middle of placing our orders – The restaurant was not exceedingly busy but this was enough for me to ask for the check and leave . I understand things happen on Aruba at a different pace but this was extremely rude. This would be our worst dining experience ever on the island
Friday was spent at the private island which as stated earlier is great – You cannot bring any food or drinks over and we found lunch and service to be just fine. After a full day, a shower and happy hour we left our 17 year old son to room service which was fine by him. Our dinner was at Gostoso which was a short 5 minute cab ride and the experience was exactly what everyone on the forums said – 4 Star dining experience and Jose the chef visited with us at least 3 times to shoot the breeze and the bill for 2 adults, dinner a drink and appetizer was less than $70. If you visit the island, Gostoso is a must for dinner!
Saturday was spent picking up a 12 passenger van from Payless/Optima (Recommended by ArubaLisa) and this worked out great as I had an additional 8 family members fly in. We checked in to the Surf Club early and just hung out Saturday night. We had dinner at Champions which really consisted of bar food and the bill was over $220 and overall not that great but certainly better than our first meal. The next few days were spent doing our normal stuff – Vegetate at the pool/ocean one day and then shore excursion the next and while I expected the Surf Club to be packed this week, I never fought for a chair or found the lazy river to be packed like an expressway at rush hour. I’ve seen prior posts about the 36 inch raft size at the Lazy River and saw many rafts way over that size and never saw anyone be asked to leave (Note: I brought 3 rafts and would bring a hat pin the next trip for those folks floating with larger rafts the size of a water trampoline and clogging up the pool!)
We did De Palm Island Tuesday and the jeep tour of natural pool on Friday and these are always lots of fun. I took our family of 9 to Texas de Brazil and actually bought a discount certificate of 50% of 12 dinners in advance. I subscribe to their email newsletter and bought it back in April for around $45 USD – This saved me big as dinner normally costs $45 each so I got each meal for about $22.50
The 2nd dinner highlight was Wacky Wahoo’s as I’ve seen the reports and the food was absolutely great ! The bill for nine of us was $270 and when I paid $220 at Champions for bar food , there was no comparison. I think I ordered the shrimp casserole but everyone agreed that we would go back if the opportunity presented itself. This is another recommendation from the site that I would totally agree with!
The 3rd dinner highlight was Thursday night at Madame Jeannette’s and this was by far the absolute best meal we ever had on the island – We left the kids to their own for dinner and the 4 of us got there at 6PM and left at 830 and we were never rushed . I had Surf and Turf and my sister in law had lamb and everyone agreed the food and service is 4 STARS also. The set up outside is really quaint and they had a guitar player start at 8PM and this was a great overall experience and another must for anyone visiting the island!
Our last day consisted of the jeep tour of Natural Pool and our guide Eric is quite the comedian which made the trip more enjoyable – My brother in law is travel challenged and can be a real pain in the butt but even he had fun and as this was his 1st trip to Aruba. We gave my 20 year old daughter the tie breaker for dinner and she wanted LaTratorria so we booked a party of 9 – Let me just say this – this was my 3rd trip for dinner here and drinks at sunset are a solid choice but the food will not compare to anyplace else we visited . Dinner for 9 people with drinks and a tip was over $500 and I could have had 2 family dinners at Wacky Wahoo’s and Gostoso for almost the same amount. Dinner was done at 830 and we headed back to the Surf Club to pack and now the fun really begins
About 8:45 while packing we get a massive rain storm followed by lightning which was amazing to watch – Unfortunately a lightning strike took out the power station and the entire island lost power - The Surf Club got power on about 2 AM so with TV’s going on we were all woken up and really did not get a good nights sleep. We followed the 3 hour customs rule on Saturday and were glad we planned – This was an absolute nightmare and apparently the airport lost power twice on Saturday morning and everything was backed up. As we planned this was not a big deal but I saw a few people who thought 2 hours was adequate and they missed their flights!! We got back home around 11:45PM but can’t wait to get back next year!!
