I have stayed at this hotel a few times on my business visits to the area. The hotel is situated up an unlit lane which is just about wide enough for two cars to pass each other and the entrance is easily missed. The entrance has no sign but is diagonally across a white rendered house . The postcode to punch into your satnav is NP12 2RB and not the postcode given on the address. The drive way winds to the hotel car park which is on a slope. So if you don’t have an automatic car then I would suggest you park your car in gear just in case your handbrake slips. The spaces are slightly narrower than usual and so if you drive a big car then you may have to park further away from the front to get some room. If the hotel is holding a function then the car park can fill pretty quickly so be warned.
The car park is on a higher ground than the hotel so there are steps leading down from the car park to the front of the hotel. The lobby area is very nice and so is the reception. I was greeted well and quickly checked in. There are rooms on the same floor as the reception area and a floor below. The rooms are nicely decorated and air-conditioned. The bed is comfortable if a little too soft for my sensitive back but that’s just personal taste. There is a flat screen TV with a range of Freeview digital channels to choose from. There is a safe and minibar in the room and complimentary tea/coffee making facility. If you are in a room on the lower floor, the patio door opens to a veranda overlooking the golf course which is very pleasant. The bathrooms are nice and have some nice features. The lights above the main mirror didn’t light my face properly and cast shadows which made things slightly difficult. The rooms I was given had a bath and shower although the bath was two-third size. There is a small TV screen inset into the wall in front of bath but in some of the rooms, the remote was missing so I couldn’t watch anything. There was black mould around some of the mastic edges around the bath and TV screen which was a little off-putting. I found the fact that they only give you one small bar of soap in the bathroom. I like to use soap in the shower and basin but I have to keep moving it from sink to bath. Also they don’t change the soap bar during the week I’m there. This seems a little bit miserly to me when I have stayed at budget hotels that change your soap every day or makes sure you always have a spare bar of soap. There is free Wi-Fi in the rooms but the signal is stronger on the upper floor than the lower.
There is a gym onsite which seems to be open to non-residents but I did not have a chance to use it. There is a nice bar area with an attached large conservatory which is where breakfast and dinner is held. The meals in the evening are nice enough with a choice of bar or a la carte menu. It’s a little expensive for what it is but that’s not surprising for a hotel. Breakfast is held in the conservatory area and is the general fayre. If you have the cooked breakfast from the menu, it is well made and enjoyable. Some days, I would guess when the hotel is full, the hotel puts on a buffet style cooked breakfast. This is in my opinion, not up to scratch. The hotel cannot seem to figure out how to keep the buffet hot. At best it’s lukewarm. I’ve seen the staff trying to figure things out but to no avail. Hopefully they will get that sorted soon. At least the views out of the conservatory are pleasant. It overlooks the golf course and looks down the valley which is beautiful on a bright sunny day. The staff are pleasant but a little too lax in their attitude for a hotel that is supposed to be a cut above the rest. I have seen them a few times busy talking and laughing between themselves rather than serving the guest. But most of them are young and probably don’t have the training or experience. Or maybe I’m expecting too much . But for the prices charged for the room, they need to up their game. When budget hotels are providing good service and rooms at a reasonable price then the competition is hard in the market.
But Bryn Meadows seems to be busy enough to be able to ignore this advice.
Lower floor to have access to the veranda. Upper floor for better Wi-Fi connection.
