We stayed at Hermitage Bay for two weeks at end of June and beginning
of July and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment.
The hotel is elegantly designed and built to the highest standard. The buildings are beautifully constructed entirely using tropical woods. No concrete, steel nor plastic. Windows are not glazed, but have wooden louver shutters with netting behind, which allow through the cool breezes. Roofs are wooden shingles lined with white Caribbean pine. Each cottage has a large verandah with a wide day bed and a pair of loungers. The design and materials blend in really well with the unspoilt natural setting. The cool purple teak floors are a delight on bare feet.
The cottages each have an iPod sound system, flat screen cable TV, large bathroom and a wonderful open air shower. Plumbing is effective
but on odd occasions the water did go off, as did the electricity but
only for a few minutes. WiFi coverage was promised, but was only evident near the bar and restaurant. There was no full-length mirror (interior decor obviously not designed by a woman).
The cottages on the hillside have large plunge pools and secluded sun
decks but seem slightly less spacious than those on the beach. The higher numbered cottages are quite a trek up the hillside. There are about 120 steps up to the top cottage, but the view from there is pretty and panoramic. The setting is magical especially at night with all the twinkling lights on the hillside.
We originally stayed in one of the cottages behind the front row on the beach but found this a little noisy in the evening when all the other cottages’ air conditioners came on. After we mentioned it to Andrew, one of the co-owners of the hotel, he very kindly organised a move to the front row for us the next day. There is a totally wonderful uninterrupted beach and sea view from the front cottages. The long beach is mixed white coral sand and shell, is very well sheltered for swimming and is practically empty.
Being a fairly small hotel, the staff quickly got to know us by name but did not become over familiar. The atmosphere was informal and the service was impeccable. The staff are all very attentive, charming and efficient and it is nice to see the staff from management down all helping each other and not just sticking to their own jobs. One example was Janice the lady running the water sports who also cleared the glasses around the pool as well as removing any excess jellyfish from the sea!
Yes, it seemed to be jellyfish season at this time of year. They were a bit of a nuisance but the hotel has a gorgeous swimming pool so it did not prove to be that much of a hardship and some days were totally jellyfish free. As regards mosquitoes and sand flies, they did not pose any problem to us. We always used insect repellent and it was certainly no worse here than anywhere else we have been in the West Indies. However as for any other wildlife besides the lovely humming birds, the usual Caribbean birds and the occasional small herd of cows on the beach, the odd little lizard and hermit crab was all we saw. So creepy crawly free!
The food is bistro style for dinner, fresh, light and tasty, but as we were there for two weeks, a wider repertoire would have suited us better. The pork dishes were my favourites and I understand it and much of the other food is locally sourced. I applaud the hotel for avoiding the ubiquitous once a week buffet dinner. Breakfast was beautifully cooked to order but I personally prefer a buffet style breakfast with just eggs cooked to order. I like to dip in and out and try all the exotic fruit and other local delicacies after a refreshing early swim. Maybe Keith will try this in the future.
Lunch was always excellent but vast; we cottoned on to having half portions otherwise the afternoon would be spent in siesta.
It was a child free zone when we were there. Apparently the families with children all go to Carlisle Bay. Take note!
As regards the inaugural opening reception with the Prime Minister and all the local dignitaries being invited, I tend to agree with the reviewer who thought that it was odd that the hotel guests were not allowed to be part of it. Maybe the management wanted to keep the reception guests from interfering with the hotel guests’ relaxation. Anyway we could still take photos!
Everything at this hotel is of a generous proportion, the drinks, the spacious cottages, the lovely pool; even the beach towels and sun beds are in plentiful supply. There is not the slightest hint of anything being trimmed back to a budget.
One little niggle is that the umbrellas around the pool and restaurant terrace are not particularly well stabilised as a sharp gust of wind would knock a few over quite regularly. They need heavier bases or the hotel may have a lawsuit on their hands! I am sure that will be addressed.
I think that Hermitage Bay is delivering exactly what people want these days. The old style five star Caribbean hotel with its fussy formal atmosphere and over elaborate food certainly needed to evolve and I think most people would agree that this change is for the better. It is nice to go to a new hotel while it is still fresh and the staff are so keen. I am sure the owners and Keith, Mandy, Michael
and the rest of the team will ensure it will continue in its stride. We look forward to returning and seeing them all again.
