We looked extensively for honeymoon spots all over the world. After settling on the Caribbean, we wanted something luxurious and unique (i.e. not a cookie-cutter hotel). After searching far and wide, we decided upon Hermitage Bay.
Prior to our stay, we requested one of the top, most private Hillside Suites. A few other guests had commented that some suites are not that private. We wanted to avoid that. To our pleasant surprise, we received Suite #35, which was 4th from the top, but on the far right, meaning that nobody else besides us would walk on the pathway and nobody could see into our cottage. I loved the cottage amenities from the private plunge pool, looking over the Caribbean to the incredible outdoor shower. It was all very romantic and relaxing.
Let me say that this place was unbelievable. It is really like being in a tropical forest and the combination of the mountains, the lush foliage (with beautiful flowers), and the turquoise Caribbean sea make this place truly magical, like a fairy tale.
The food was consistently gourment. From a kobe burger with white truffle appetizer to the lobster, it was very top notch. This is what I would expect from a 5-star restaurant, not an all-inclusive resort. I felt that the drinks were very good. Although the house wine selection was small, it was very good, so we didn't feel the need to buy premium wines there.
The service was very good. My only complaint was that some of the workers (not all), seemed to be rather sad. I don't know what it is, but I think its because life in Antigua for the locals is not easy. Still, they would consistently go above and beyond. We did have some very friendly staff workers, such as Devon, Michael and Rose.
The road leading to Hermitage Bay is very bumpy, but that didn't bother us. In fact, given the fact that we had to pass some very impoverished areas from the airport to the hotel, I was glad to have this buffer, for safety reasons.
We did a few different excursions. We did a private lunch on the beach. It was beautiful and romantic. The color of the water in the sea is unbelievable. Our favorite tour was the Xtreme Circumnav tour of the island. They pick you up on a speedboat and take you around the entire island, with stops at Stingray City (fun), Green Island for lunch (beautiful water color), Nelson's Dockyard for snorkeling (great visibility in the water), and Rendevous Beach for rum bunch (beautiful beach). As we had an opportunity to go by other highly rated resorts around the island (Galley Bay, Sandals, Jumby Bay, Verandah, Carlisle Bay, Curtain Bluff), I had an opportunity to compare to Hermitage Bay. While the others looked very nice (except for Sandals), I would have to say that the setting and cottage feel of Hermitage Bay is nicer than the others. I felt that we made the right choice in picking the best resort in Antigua.
We did a day tour of St. John's and it was fun to do a lot of shopping, but a couple hours was enough.
All in all, Hermitage Bay is a world-class resort in a magical location. We would definitely come back.
