Beach or hillside? We were torn. Being "beach people" we went with a beachfront cottage and were not disappointed. It is so nice to run a few yards and dive into the ocean! Hillsiders complained that it was a pain to trek back and forth if you wanted a rest from the sun or such, but the view and the plunge pools are amazing so it is definitely personal preference! The rooms are some of the best and the outdoor shower, spectacular. The free water and restocking of the mini bar is a wonderful amenity that should be standard at all high-end resorts. The room service charge to eat in ones' room is a bit much, though, especially when it is just a fruit plate and breads for breakfast.
I will make note of things not mentioned by others. The front desk told us that the only place to run was down the main road and back. Luckily we conversed with one of the owners who told us of the loop. It is the trail that leads to the private beaches and loops around a secluded part of the island. Came across a herd of nervous cows and it was truly a "running with the bulls" experience as the bulls circled around behind me as I was running behind the herd. Quite funny. Strong ankles required for the trail but worth it. Breathtaking views of the secret beaches as well.
We were extremely disappointed by the windsurfing equipment. My husband and I even offered to rent a sail and board for our use so that we could windsurf together. The manager kept promising to take care of it but never followed through. There is only one intermediate sail and board - impossible to do as a couple and more difficult if other guests want to use it too.
Don't miss taking the kayaks around the bend to the private beaches. The further you go, the better the beaches! Had it all to ourselves and the sand was so much better! Devon said that they will even drive some chairs around if one so desires. The sand in front of the resort is a bit rough on the feet, more so than I expected. Watersox were nice to have.
Noise travels in this place. The closer to the bar, the more noise one should expect. Though not a party place, we were glad to be further away. Also, we were shocked at how many people turn on the television in this paradise and the sounds can be easily heard in adjacent rooms. We were very irritated with our neighbors until we realized that when the power surges and restarts some of the television come on by themselves! They weren't even in the room. We met them and joked about it later - I think they ended up just unplugging it.
I was very pleased that the staff remembered my email that it was my husband's birthday. They saved us the best table and thought to have a bottle of sparking cider rather than champagne as we don't drink. We so enjoyed the restaurant staff!
The beach staff was hit and miss. A few days we could not even get an extra towel, but most days the service was exceptional. As you walk to your chairs of choice you are greeted be the beach staff who puts down your pillows and sets up your towels. Water and fresh fruit are offered regularly. Though not typical, one day they even brought us our afternoon coffee and treats (white linen and all) on the beach. They also learned that we drink coffee 24/7 and had it ready for us at all times.
The spa is simple to look at but I enjoyed a heavenly massage, and I am picky. It was so good that I booked a second one. The view from the massage room was amazing.
If you are an active person this place is a challenge. We ran, took turns wind surfing, kayaked and snorkeled, but mountain bikes would be a great addition. We would recommend the Extreme Adventure tour. They pick you up beachfront and are a great crew with diverse activities. Stingray City is included and I had a great time there. Not a theme park as I expected. I was even bitten by a stingray! Just startled, not hurt. Drew enough blood to leave a mark for a good story. The zip line is a bit of a tourist trap. Having never done it, that and the rope course made for a bit of fun but was not as scenic as I expected. The resort is so small that these little excursions were nice to break up the scenery.
Look for the cute little mongooses (mongeese?). They will come up on your deck if you're still and quiet. We took to feeding them but others were not as fond of the wildlife. The insect music was amazing and loud some nights but we actually got used to it and loved it. Bug bites were a problem for me even though we were beachfront and not on the hill. We spent a huge amount of time on our veranda and running the trails, so I may have been asking for it.
A jellyfish nightmare. Luckily, on the excursion we ended up swimming through huge swarms of them and discovered that they really don't hurt. (They were so thick that I actually started to panic.) I had been told this but didn't believe.
We always slept with the slats to the shutters open (they are screened) and awoke to a beautiful view of the ocean from our bed. We napped together on our comfy daybed on our private veranda. A lovely and truly relaxing place.
