My wife and I stayed at Hermitage Bay for six days in mid June. I'll take you through our experience (which may be a bit long), but I hope it illustrates just how wonderful this resort is.
Our complimentary airport transfer was handled courteously and greatly reduced the stress of a long flight and processing through immigration. A Hermitage Bay representative greeted us at the airport with cool towels and bottled water, then we were shuttled to the resort which is approximately 30 minutes from the airport. The property is located in a secluded portion of the island at the end of a roughly two mile long dirt road.
Once we arrived at the resort we were again greeted in the reception area with more cool towels and fresh mojitos. Check-in was hassle-free, we only signed one document and provided a credit card for incidentals. While we waited, our luggage was taken to our hillside cottage suite. The porter then took us to the top of the hill (we stayed in the upper-most cottage) and gave us a brief 10 minute tour of our accommodations. From that point on we had the freedom to do whatever we wanted. A few of the highlights:
- Every meal was presented in a relaxed atmosphere in the resort’s open air dining room. All of our meals were exceptionally prepared and served by excellent wait staff. The menus changed every day, which allowed us to sample local cuisine and gourmet dishes throughout our stay.
- Relaxation could be found in our cottage (which had a private plunge pool), on the beach, around the main pool, or at the open air lounge/bar. Attentive wait staff stayed out of sight, but were always ready to prepare a fresh drink, bring a clean towel, or to just provide conversation and recommendations on local hot spots.
- Recreation at the resort includes multiple non-motorized water sports. The staff can provide instruction for sailing, windsurfing, etc or will also pilot the watercraft and take you on a tour of the bay.
- Being a small resort, the other guests are able to find privacy and at no time did we feel crowded. However, we managed to make friends with many of the other couples as we all tended to mingle in the bar before and after dinner. The excellent bar tenders helped break the ice.
- Since we stayed longer than three days, we received a complimentary 30 minute massage. The spa staff were excellent and made brilliant use of 30 minutes.
A few recommendations:
- The taxi ride into St Johns (capital of Antigua) costs $50 for a round trip and takes approximately 20 minutes. It is well worth the drive. Duty free shopping, a beautiful turn of the century cathedral, and local museum are just some of the attractions.
- On Sundays, try to make it out to Shirley Heights. This location is a national preserve which used to be part of the British military's presence on the island. Today it provides some of the most breathtaking views of the island as well as steel band music and fresh barbeque every Sunday afternoon. This is a huge attraction for tourists and locals alike.
- The menu at Hermitage Bay is amazing, however make sure you try the Kobe beef hamburger (it's sublime).
Finally, the complimentary airport transfer upon our departure made leaving paradise a little easier. They even included our departure taxes in our overall bill so that we didn't have to bother with it at the airport.
