My wife and I spent 10 days in Antigua at the beginning of December, the final 4 nights at Hermitage Bay. Suffice to say that we were very impressed. Like many of the other reviewers, we have stayed at our fair share of 5-star properties, and this resort more than measured up in almost every way. Some of the previous complaints were either not noticed or irrelevant -- we almost never heard the mosquito-fogging machine, and they weren't even that pesky to begin with (no more so than the rest of the island).
Also, we were in a Hillside Villa, #23. It is quite close to the bottom of the hill, but it is the last villa on its particular path (just past the Spa), and as a result it is quite secluded. Everything about the room was fantastic. We shut off the a/c as soon as we arrived and never switched it on. It was the 'breezy' season anyhow, and the villa was delightful to sleep in, sans a/c.
The plunge pool is quite large, and we spent nearly all of our days up at our villa, reading, napping, plunging...very relaxing, just perfect. We pretty much only ambled down to the main building for meals. They are certainly not Michelin-starred affairs, but virtually everything we had was quite good. I would definitely recommend any of the local specials whenever they pop up -- mahi mahi or snapper, jerk chicken, etc. Breakfasts are enormous and delicious as well.
One thing that is odd -- there is a minibar in the room, and they restock it every day based on your preferences, but they have no snacks whatsoever. It would be nice during the afternoon to have something in our room, and we requested this, but were told that there were no peanuts/potato chips/etc. Weird, but not a huge deal.
The staff is exceptional; everyone is not only friendly, but also genuinely willing to help in every way. They are clearly very competent, and it helped to make our stay much more enjoyable.
Also, the day we left, our flight was departing at 9.20pm. We had requested a late checkout, but there were new guests coming to our room that day. So what they did was give us a different room on the beach from about 2.30 in the afternoon until we left at around 7. This was an extremely nice touch, and it made our last day there so much more enjoyable.
There are still a few details to be ironed out, but we would most definitely stay at Hermitage Bay again. It is for those who can amuse themselves (as it is well removed from anything else) and just wish to take it easy and be pampered in an idyllic location.
