My wife and I just returned from two weeks of April bliss at Jolly Beach. The place needs some work, but who cares. The location is fantastic, the food is surprisingly great --- we enjoyed all the restaurants. It wasn't gourmet for the most part, but darn good.
Grounds are nice, pools are great, beach grill was a hoot, the staff were very friendly ( as long as you are friendly with them --- this seems to be hard for some people to do), and the entertainment was fun. Judging by the reviews, it seems as if some people expect Las Vegas style entertainment, but their expectations may be a mite too high. These are probably the same people who we saw frowning during their dinners, and rudely demanding drinks from the hard-working staff. Those guests deserve to be miserable, because they seem to prefer that. Go to Vegas, and leave Antigua to those who appreciate the simple things.
The place needs some sprucing up, but what resort in the Caribean doesn't ---- the severe weather and temps take their toll. We've stayed at Sandals in Jamaica at twice the price, and the room was horrible --- but that didn't really bother us either, because we expect that these countries will have their challenges.
So, give the resort a break and take a pill folks. JBR deserves a lot of credit for running a scenic, friendly and safe resort. Didn't get sick, and we can't say that about some of the 10 other tropic destinations we've been to. You could even drink the water from the tap, which was a first for us in all of our travels. The only thing that did make me sort of sick was seeing the topless wonders on the beach who should have done us all a favour and covered up with tents or tablecloths. Geez --- some things should be left to the imagination ... or not. However, can't blame the resort for those spectacles .... we have to rely on good taste, which for some guests was truly lacking.
The Wadadli circumnavigation tour was well worth it ---- we had a great day, and there was no one topless on board .... hurray.
The pools were nice, but it would be great to see the staff enforce some kind of ruling for these people who throw enough air mattresses in the water for their entire 6 person family. At times, there was hardly any room for anyone else in the smaller pool ( which was actually a good size pool). Some vacationers show no consideration to others, so it doesn't surprise me when I read their "spoiled brat" reviews.
So, all in all, we were nicely surprised ... the worst part of the vacation was not the resort, but the prima donna behaviour of some of the guests. We hope they choose Sandals next time, because we will probably come back to JBR.
